What is a white elephant grab bag gift?

coasterqueen wrote: Dh has a party on Tuesday on his floor at work and he was told to bring a white elephant grab bag gift dunno.gif or a gift no more than $5 (bought). I'm clueless on this, help! blush.gif

sparkys2boys replied: A what..lol??? Sorry, i'll be reading the post to see what the heck it is too??? I've never heard of it.. have fun at the party though!!

Maddie&EthansMom replied: It should just be a gift under $5 that you put in a bag. White elephant is the name of the game. wink.gif

MyBrownEyedBoy replied: The ideas at white elephant exchanges that I've done in the past has been to either regift something you have gotten in the past or to find something cheap and amusing. Kind of a "One man's trash is another man's treasure." sort of thing. At the white elephant exchange for Aaron's office, I ended up with this goofy looking reindeer music box (complete with a feather boa and beaded antlers) and Aaron ended up with a candle that is disguised as martini shaker. Which would be cool, except the martini shaker is shaped like a penguin. rolling_smile.gif I can't wait to regift that one at my party on Monday. LOL.

MyLuvBugs replied: A white elephant gift is usually a corny/crazy gift like a stuffed animal toy that squeeks with a box of animal crackers, or a walking cane with a horn on it (although that might be a little large), maybe a nerf basketball and hoop, or a funny looking piggy bank?

Just something cheap and weird usually. smile.gif

EDITED: I like the way Kelly stated the rules of the game too. That'd be a way to clean out your closets. HA! smile.gif

CantWait replied: How funny is that. rolling_smile.gif rolling_smile.gif

Get ready for some useless junk. laugh.gif

Brias3 replied: A white elephant is just a silly or "gag" gift. We do a white elephant exchange as a fun game amongst the adults on Christmas on DH's side.

We've done everything from wrapping up useless junk sitting around the basement or a silly dancing Santa type thing.

MoonMama replied: Well you learn something new everyday! Sounds fun. thumb.gif

Jamison'smama replied: See, we even have different ideas of what it is....my understanding of this is as Kelly said as well. Something from your house that you no longer want. It can be funny but doesn't have to be. I have recieved vases (the cheap kind that flower shops send you when you order flowers), christmas decorations etc. but some people really give you more trash-like items.

Good luck smile.gif

C&K*s Mommie replied: Everything that was said above is true for Chris' family's white elephant. But for his grandparents white elephant, the gifts are nicer. Like movie gift cards (always popular) or restaraunt gift cards. They have a max life of being "stolen" (someone takes that gift, and you have to pick a new one) twice after someone opens them. It is not specified to be in a bag, sometimes they are merely wrapped. One time I got a bottle of A-1 steak sauce, never noticing the note on it that a riddle on it pointing to two steaks in the refrigerator. yummy.gif That gift was "stolen" the two times after that. rolleyes.gif

coasterqueen replied: Ok, well honestly if it's "junk" we don't keep it around. blush.gif Dh and I both believe on keeping closets somewhat tidy and stuff so we clean them out regularly. I probably do have some small bud vases that I was given but never used. Do you think he could "regift" something like that even though he's a guy?

C&K*s Mommie replied: sure, sounds like a white elephant to me.

luvmykids replied: I went to a Christmas party this last Friday and the gift exchange was White Elephant style, where you draw a number and get to pick a gift, blah blah but the stipulation was that it was a $25 gift...I think White Elephant is the game, not so much what kind of gift but of course I could be wrong tongue.gif

MyBrownEyedBoy replied: From Wikipedia

moped replied: My family plays that at christmas as well but it isn't junk - usually pretty decent gifts for $20

Boo&BugsMom replied: I love White Elephant exchanges. We even did one for my cousin for her wedding shower. We gave her all gag gifts and hid her real gifts until she opened all the junk. She was mortified at first until she realized those weren't her real gifts. We're a mean family wink.gif ! biggrin.gif One year at a company party I gave away an old bathroom rug and I wrapped a crawfish inside of it. We go all out! biggrin.gif

coasterqueen replied: Thanks everyone for your tips. DH ended up being called out of town through Wednesday so he won't get to participate. I was going to take a gift over to his office anyways, but DH didn't want me to. rolleyes.gif

Calimama replied: Interesting.. I've never heard of that before.
