What else can I do? - Anthony's coughing non stop

CantWait wrote: Anthony has been coughing for the past two hours, literally non stop, and has puked because he can't catch his breath.

I've given him cough medicine, hot tea, cough drops (fishermans friend at that), put vick's vapor rub on his chest and back...

What else can I do?

luvmykids replied: Warm honey? I like to heat it just enough to make it warm, then dilute it until it's very easy to swallow.

Did you ask him if he by any chance ate something new or unusual? If it came on suddenly and is so severe I'm wondering if it could be an allergic reaction.

CantWait replied: I should also say that I'm really p'd off that he's sick.

He has been pretty healthy the last four months since moving here miracoulsly says the doctor (cause kids always get sick here), he had a small cough for a couple days and that was it.

Than I take him to the doctors office for immunizations Friday, and bam, the next day it starts. dry.gif dry.gif Now he's missed Friday of school for immunizations, Monday to go get his TB test read, and came home before snack time at school because he wasn't feeling well. Needless to say, he's not going anywhere tomorrow. sad.gif

Kaitlin'smom replied: I was going to suggest honey as well, as long as he is not allergic to it.

CantWait replied:
Did that, and than 5 minutes later, he puked again sad.gif

booey2 replied: Hi Marie, I was going to suggest the honey too, have you tried steaming the bathroom with him in it. Run the shower on super hot, have him sit in the room and breath in the moisture. Or just even sucking on hard candies. You may have to take him in for some liquid codine, our doc here perscribes it when we have had really bad coughs, ones that just won't stop.

Hope he feels better soon.

Calimama replied: Maybe gargle warm salt water? Or suck on a peppermint?

lovemy2 replied: Put the Vicks on the bottom of his feet - sounds hokey but it works hug.gif

boyohboyohboy replied: you know marie, I am so with you! EVERY TIME we go to the dr we come out with something worse then we went in!
our dr the last time we were there suggested the honey but I have to say, I tried it and it made me sick..
but I didnt heat it or dilute it..
maybe try again since he already probably had a sensative gag reflex from getting sick the first time..
I also think the shower might help calm it down and then try the honey?
I hope he feels better.

CantWait replied: Ok, I steamed him, gave him candy (which he's now sucking on), and just for the heck of it, put Vick's on his feet and put some cozy socks on. Still going strong. sad.gif

booey2 replied: I am sorry Marie, you may just have to take him in to be seen. My hubby had a really nagging cough and finally went in to be told he had bronchitis, no other symptons other then the cough and that he was on the verge of pneumonia.

Kaitlin'smom replied: shoot he is a tough one, so sorry he is sick. how long did he sit in the steam? poor thing he must be hurting

DVFlyer replied: Chloe coughed for two weeks. Nothing we tried helped. It slowly got a bit better but we took her into the Dr's. and they have her a breathing treatment and sent us home with more (we have our own nebulizer).

The theory was that she may have asthma (my wife does) and it's preventing her from clearing her lungs effectively.

Good luck.

Calimama replied: Does he feel like something is stuck in his throat?

CantWait replied: Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

After three hours, he's finally snooze.gif

Lets hope he sleeps for a bit now.

I should mention, it's midnight here wacko.gif

booey2 replied: Okay, will let him sleep peacefully. snooze.gif snooze.gif snooze.gif Now you run quick and sleep too.

Calimama replied:
Oy. I hope he's feeling better after he wakes up. hug.gif hug.gif

Jason's Papa replied:
Yep. and put a pair of socks over it. Works like a charm.

Kaitlin'smom replied:
wheew I hope he sleeps good, now you need to go get some snooze.gif yourself.

coasterqueen replied: I hope he feels better Marie. hug.gif

Is he running a fever? Complaining his throat is sore? How does his throat look?

I know Kylie was puking, really sore throat, and a terrible cough and she was diagnosed with Strep Throat. Ryan and I had it earlier in December and Kylie has now had it twice sleep.gif . Megan just came down with a terrible cough that she can't stop coughing, a sore throat, and a fever. Dh has her in to the doc now to see if it's Strep.

Apparently Strep is REALLY bad this year. I've never had it in my life and the kids hadn't either until this terrible season. dry.gif

CantWait replied: He actually slept from midnight, right through till 8 this morning, and seems to be doing better. He only gave a couple little bitty coughs this morning, and he's eating a bit so I don't think his throat hurts, but I did keep him home from school and may do so as well tomorrow just because.

I went to sleep right after him as well and actually slept all night which I haven't been doing either for quite some time. However I went to sleep with a funny feeling in my throat and now I'm not feeling the greatest.

Oh to be a mom and do the caregiving and get all the kisses from sick babies, so that we too may get sick ourselves. wacko.gif

MommyToAshley replied: hug.gif Glad to hear he is sleeping and doing better. I hope he is on the mend and feeling like his old self too.

Sorry to hear you are not feeling great. I hope you don't come down with it.

My3LilMonkeys replied: hug.gif hug.gif Glad he seems to be doing better - and I hope you don't catch it!!!! In case it comes back I just read something online the other day that letting a piece of chocolate melt in your mouth helps with coughs - one of the ingredients in the chocolate is supposed to be good for it. I haven't had a chance to try it myself but it's worth a shot.
