What do you give your child? - If anything

Sarah&Mackenzie wrote: Mackenzie has a little cough and a stuffed up runny nose (it amazes me how it can be stuffed up and run at the same time dry.gif ) Anyway she will be 2 in a month and was wondering if I should let it run its course or give her some meds. I know the Triaminic has those thin strips for infants. They are for cough and decongestant. Has anyone ever used those or what do you use for an under 2 year old?

CantWait replied: I don't give anything unless it's a fever I can't get rid of with traditional methods, such as a cool bath or undressing, or if so cranky they will not sleep etc...

At that point I give some tylenol, maybe some saline drops up the nose, but nothing else.

Same here.

With a child under too - what our doctors have always told us to do is give them 1/2 the childrens dose if they are over 6 months.

I haven't given Andy ANYTHING in a long long time - she has very serious allergies and so she can't have any cold meds.

Jamison'smama replied: I have given Jack decongestants --it helps him. I have used both the pediacare and triaminic.

mckayleesmom replied: We also give something...Usually half the dosage of the youngest age reccomendation.

Boo&BugsMom replied: I only give Tanner meds before he goes to sleep to help him sleep more soundly, or else he wakes up constantly from his icky nose and cough. During the day, unless it's super bad, I let it run it's course. I usually use Simply Cough or Simply Stuffy.

ediep replied: I try to only give meds at bedtime if the cold is preventing him from resting. I have used pediacare and triaminic

hope your little one is better soon. hug.gif hug.gif

Sarah&Mackenzie replied: Thanks for your input everyone. She is starting to cough more at night and I am afraid she is going to have trouble sleeping that is why I was thinking about giving it to her at night only. I didn't know you weren't suppose to give them decongestents???

jacobsmama replied: My ped has always told me since Jacob turned 1 that it it s ok to give Dimetap or Robitussin (or the generic kind). You just have to follow dose and if it doesn't say just ask the pharmacist how much you can give her based on her age and estimated weight. They are always willing to help. I hope she feels better soon.

Ohh and Cool mist vaporizer with Kaz in it at night helps wonders, or at least for Jacob it does. wink.gif

sky319 replied: Hello, I am new here and thought maybe I might add. My Kirsten is 19 mths today. She also had the dreaded fall congestion/cold. Her pediatrition told us we can follow the weight chart on most otc meds. I prefer for this situation (we have a long family history of sinus congestion) Tylonal cough and cold durring the day and at night before bed half the regular dose of childrens benedryl-d for her weight so she can sleep better and breath well all night.

coasterqueen replied:
Our ped says NO decongestants or any kind of cough syrups. There was an article posted on here before and a thread about this very subject. I lost my favorites or else I'd post it because I had it on there.

kimberley replied: here is the thread Jeanne posted...

i never used them anyway. we just humidify the room and if it's really bad i will steam the bathroom.

Sarah&Mackenzie replied:
Thanks!
