What are you doing for fresh fruit and veggies

MommyToAshley wrote: Now that fall is approaching, it is hard to find quality fresh fruit. For veggies, I will probably use a lot more frozen veggies, but not sure what to do about fruit. Ashley eats fresh veggies and fruit every day. I bought her some applesauce that has strawberries or peaches added but no added sugar. I looked at all the canned fruit and most of it has sugar of some sort added. sad.gif Just wondering what all of you were doing?

MomofTay&Sam replied: I have never even thought about it? In NY we always have fresh fruit almost year around. I try to do alot of fresh but do not always have time. Gerber makes the fruit chuncks and Sammy loves them. As for veggies we have a wide variety all yr around to.

coasterqueen replied: I've been thinking about that too. Kylie loves peaches and I went to the farmers market the other day and they are already not selling peaches anymore for the year sad.gif

A co-worked suggested I buy frozen fruits, she said they were much better than canned fruits. I dunno about this, but I might give it a try. I did buy some canned peaches and mixed fruit in low syrup the other day, but I really didn't like doing it. I wish they had canned fruits in no syrup, lol.

As far as veggies, Kylie eats fresh carrots and celery a lot and I would think those would be avail all year around here, I hope. We actually eat a lot of canned veggies because I hate frozen veggies, so she will get those. I make sure I buy the "no salt added" ones.

jdkjd replied: Our grocery store has pre-cut fruit and veggies that we get and just cut up smaller. The latest hits have been cantelope and watermelon. I would think the frozen would be better than the canned and then if you only use part the remainder can be put back in the freezer...

ediep replied: well, since Jason only likes carrots and bananas, I shouldn't have a problem. I wish the little man would be more daring and try some new foods blink.gif

Hillbilly Housewife replied: I feed Zach oatmeal and pancakes.... I put cut up fruit in both, and someitmes I use fruit like applesauce style and mix it in...it's pretty tasty anyways. I also buy real fruit jam and jelly....and bananas.

As for veggies? well he don't eat much of them at all.... mashed potatoes, fries, pieces of cooked carrots....

DansMom replied:
The Gerber fruits seem good---peaches and pears. Also, I'm able to find peaches and pear halves that are canned in just grape juice rather than syrup. I think Del Monte makes them and they are referred to as "Lite". For vegetables, I'm going to try to make my own squash and sweet potatos for him, and he loves the Gerber green beans and carrots.

paradisemommy replied: i don't know if you guys have a costco or sam's club by you, but they have these big bags of mixed fruit for pretty cheap that are wonderful. i have to confess i was never a fan of frozen stuff before but they really do taste better than the canned ones...and no syrup...bonus... rolling_smile.gif since it's always just different degress of HOT over here - the frozen fruit is great to snack on!!! ohmy.gif

MommyToAshley replied:
I must have missed your reply, do you know the brand name of frozen fruit? Or what does the package look like?

paradisemommy replied: Dee Dee - i'm gonna make a costco run tomorrow (probably) so i'll find out for sure for you!

MommyToAshley replied: Thanks!

paradisemommy replied: ok..the name is Wawana and it's called Festival of Fruit. It comes in a 6# bag and it's clear and resealable. It had strawberries, papaya, pineapple and one other fruit that i can't remember. I'm not sure if there is another one too because I remember before when i bought it, it had the usual fruits - like melons and grapes. I want to say it was like $5 or 6 but i was trying to concentrate on remembering the name so i didn't concentrate on the price so much. dry.gif i left my pen in the car... mad.gif hth!! smile.gif

MommyToAshley replied: thumb.gif Thanks.. you're awesome! Time to go shopping! biggrin.gif
