Well we didn't

mckayleesmom wrote: get a puppy.....YET....we took Tannersmoms advice and thought on it and decided to wait till we have a house to get that kind of dog....in the meantime we are going to look for a different kind of puppy.

TANNER'S MOM replied: Oh now I feel bad unsure.gif

They are rowdy dogs though. Maybe something smaller for the house?

A&A'smommy replied: sad.gif its probably a good thing we had a puppy not too long ago that was big and HYPER and so we had to give her away sad.gif but now I'm getting a chiuahua MUCH better house dog and if you get a long haired they are better with kids. ALTHOUGH if you think Mckaylee will be to hyper with the dog a cocker spaniel or a springer spaniel might be a better house dog. Springers are bigger than cockers BUT they are WONDERFUL with children!

MyBrownEyedBoy replied:
Cockers are great dogs, but some of them have the nasty habit of peeing when they get excited or nervous. I personally like pound puppies, no papers, but they also tend to be healthier. A lot of pure breeds have hidden health problems. Dalmations are often deaf, cockers can have ear problems, golden retrievers and shepherds can have hip problems. Just be sure to research your breeder and the breed.

mckayleesmom replied: we will find something.....we were thinking maybe a kitten,,,,but I hate the thought of a litter box....Im one of those people that grew up with cats,,,,but I hated seeing there liter box where people can see them.....and we really don't have a hidden spot for a liter box....besides Russells room....cause he only uses it at night,,,but still. I would rather get a dog that I can take walking with me and that will bark if there is a stranger around....Don't feel bad Melba....we didn't take her to see the dogs either....so she is clueless. We just have to find the perfect dog and when you mentioned the barking and chewing....I thought it would be unfair to our neighbors....we share walls.

BTW Jessyanne.....Chiwawahs can tend to be mean too.....just a heads up...I grew up next door to 3 little mean ones.....and Ive met other mean ones too. Alot of them don't like kids.

luvbug00 replied: I think a cat would be cute but it just depends on the kids too if they are not exposed alot to them you may discover they have allergies. I took Mya to the pet store when they had kittens often and that's how I found out that she is. The best dog I think for kids is a Sheba-Inu, goldens, labs (though they are roudy puppies) and poodles (mixes) way true on the phyco pure breeds they can be a handful.Do your research! Hope you find one soon !! remember no matter the breed make sure it is raised arround kids for the highest tolerancy!! wink.gif

MyBrownEyedBoy replied:
Chihuahuas can be mean, but I would be more worried about how tiny and fragile they can be around little kids. What kid doesn't want to pick up and cuddle their puppy, but I have seen them break legs jumping off a couch, so I would want a bit sturdier dog. Any of the toy breeds have skinny legs that can break easily as puppies.

TANNER'S MOM replied: I have a small Min Pin..she is a good house dog. Not at all the same temperment has her larger name sake the Doberman.

But I have a suggestion.. A weiner dog. You can get them in long or short hair for allergies. And cleaning purpuses. I have never heard of a really mean one. They stay small and seem to be pretty smart little dogs. Just a suggestion.

ETA: With a cat... you can always get a Nicer litter box with the hood and deordorant thingy. When I had a cat that was all I would use with the GOOD litter. That is the only place my DH agreed not to be a cheapo. He hates the smell!

Here is my Baby w/ my baby!

MyBrownEyedBoy replied: Here is a web site quiz to help determine what kinds of dog would best fit your house and lifestyle.

Sorry if I am being too nosy. I just hate for people to get a dog thinking it will be cool, but have no idea how much work it will be.

luvbug00 replied: Oh ummm sad.gif sorry wiener dogs are extermely jelous and heathens with Kids They also have horrible heath problems that can start very early acause of the elongated spine. Especially of they are overweight! But I kinda like dogs chubby! emlaugh.gif

Go to the AKC website and they can tell you dogs you can have if allergies become an issue and they too can reccomend good dogs for kids cool.gif

3xsthefun replied: I love Cocker Spaniel's and want one one day. But they do tend get ear infections some, well least last one my parents had did. I also heard they are more likely to bite with smaller kids.

But it is all in the training too! Chihuahua's can be good house dogs and good with kids. You just have to teach your kids how to handle them is all.

I would suggest going to the pound or your shelter and see what they have. There sure are alot of dogs & puppies need a good home! You would be saving a life!

I think mutts are good a purebreds. I've had better luck with them, I do like purebreeds. But there sure are alot of health problems with them. Not that mutts do not have any.

Anyways the choice is up to you! Just be sure do little research before you go out and get a purebreed if that is what you want?

b&bsmom replied: Well, one of the best dogs we had was a mutt from the spca. He was a great dog and we had him since he was a puppy. Our Collie was a great dog too. Good with the kids and great dog.

However now that I am married and live in a mobile home and my husband grew up with cats we have cats. My hubby had one when we met and then when I was pg with our first we got a stray from my aunt. Long story but she kinda took care of a lot of cats that lived at her house. Anyway our first cat Mikey died and my dd took it really hard so we said we would look for another cat. We heard from a vet they were looking for a home for two kittens so we got them. Glad we did because a few months later our other cat died as well. I am really glad I got the two kittens together. They are great with the kids, I think because they play with each other so don't care as much about the kids bugging them. They act like dogs which is the funniest thing. I know it sounds strange but I would get two at the same time again. They just seem so much better than when we got the cats seperatly. Just a thought for you to think about it.....
