Today's safety project - spin off of horrible day

PascosGirl wrote: Ok, I hope this is all right with the admins. But I am going to start a safety project each day. I think sometimes we just don't think about checking these things until something happens to someone. So, if you have any projects, send them to me and I will post them each day.

I just looked up some statistics on children taking adult medicine or overdosing on their own medicine. It is pretty scary. Some adult medicines can kill children instantly. Iron is also another big worry because overdosing on iron can also kill a child.

Make sure your medicines are not just out of reach (because kids are much more intelligent than we sometimes get them credit for) but locked up. Also, properly dispose of all expired medicines that you don't need to keep anymore.

So, today's project is to clean out your medicine cabinet, getting rid of whatever you don't need and locking up those you do need. You can lock them in a pantry or in a box with a lock. Anything, but lock them up. It is better to be safe than sorry.

ediep replied: great idea!
Thanks!

ammommy replied: I'm surprised at how many people don't think to lock up their vitamins (especially with iron). Thanks for the reminder. I just looked around and saw a bottle of Tylenol and Nyquil on the counter ohmy.gif

mammag replied: Thanks for the needed reminder! I have meds floating around in 3 different medicine cabinets and a first aid bag. I'm not sure where I'll put them though....

ammommy replied:
We bought a tackle box to use for meds. It's portable, but lockable. now we just have to remember to use it.

PascosGirl replied: Yayyyy! Our babies will be so much safer. Thanks guys!

3xmommy replied: Let me tell you. Medicine overdose in a child is horrible.

One night when my son was still very small, about 8-9 months old, big enough to stand... my sister (when she stayed with us) had gotten up to take Tylenol and in her drunken stupor, left the open container on my desk directly next to my son's playpen. (He slept in his playpen for a while, he loved the darn thing.)... Well, you know how babies are... he thought they were pretty! He slobbered up some and without even swallowing an entire tablet, had overdosed. He went through several PAINFUL blood takings... plus 9oz of this nasty black charcoal stuff. The nurses even tried to mask it a little with some cocoa but you could tell it was rank... we had to force it down him. bawling.gif

So yes, be very careful mommies

Wow! I am glad he is ok now. It is something parents don't think about. Thank you for sharing your story. I am going to think of something we should check everyday. Just to be safe.

redchief replied: Hmmm.... antibiotics from 1997... I may still need those.

Just kidding... Great idea. I wouldn't be wearing my white helmet if I didn't say not to forget fire safety!!!

MommyToAshley replied: thumb.gif What a great idea!!!! thumb.gif Thanks for volunteering to do this!

Hmmmm.... I wonder if we should change the Children's Health forum to Children's Health and Safety forum and then make the saftey project a sub-forum under there.... kind of like we do the diet journals in the Dieting & Healthy Eating forum. This way all of the safety projects will be in one spot, and newcomers can look up the ones they missed.

I have my meds put up high, but they are not locked up. They are up high in a medicine cabinet in a bathroom that had a door that was hard to open, but Ashley could probably open that door now. I never thought about locking them.... this is something I need to do. I put a lock box on DH's list of items to get at Home Depot this weekend for his honey-do list. Thanks! thumb.gif

MommyToAshley replied:
I am so glad he is fine now. That must have been so scary and painful for you to go through. I shuttered just reading your post! But, thank for your story... it makes me motivated to actually lock up our meds, not just put them up high.

iluvmysweetiepies replied: Great idea!! Tomorrow I'm going to reorganize and lock up our medicines!!

PascosGirl replied: It really is something that most of us don't think about. I was very blessed that he didn't ingest a lethal dose. However, he very well could have.
