Those that have had adenoids taken out - Talk to me...

coasterqueen wrote: Megan saw the ENT the other day and they said her adenoids were fairly large and should be taken out. We scheduled the surgery (yesterday) for Friday, May 2nd. I'm NERVOUS!!!! Especially since I won't be able to go back there with her until she "falls asleep". Did any of you get to do that? I wish they'd let Dh or I do that. We get to sit back there with her until they take her back to put her to sleep, but that's it. sad.gif I'm wondering if i should push harder to be able to do that.

I'm not really nervous about everything else to do w/the surgery, just not being there when she goes under and when she wakes.

bawoodsmall replied: When Aiden had his second set of tubes in December they took his adnoids as well. They took an 1.5 year old from me who was needless to say not happy. Poor thing. Are you worried she is going to freak out or is it more for you? I would try and talk them into letting one of you be there if that is what you want. Doesnt hurt to ask. She will be ok hug.gif

TrulyBlessed replied: My daughter Megan had this done when she was 4 yrs old. She also had to have tubes put in her ears. We had a very nice experience, everyone was wonderful with her. We stayed in the room with her until it was time for them to take her back to be put to sleep. Even though it may not sound too comforting, they said that it is actually faster for her if she cries because she inhales more of the gas quicker to be knocked out and then they do the needle part. She wasn't even back therer for 15-20 minutes and they came out and said they were all done. I was so amazed at how fast this went. It took longer for her to wake up and she did puke up some blood before we went home and they said that was normal. Her recovery was quick and overall it went well.

We are taking our youngest daughter Alyssa who is now 4 to the ENT in two weeks, so I'm anticipating she will need the same because she snores so bad and even though I have been through it. I will be uptight again when it comes to the point of leaving her, but if the staff is as good this time as they were with Megan, who is now 9 yrs old. I will be more relaxed and comfortable.

Hope this helps!

Our Lil' Family replied: Thomas did in July when he got his 2nd set of tubes. We went back with him to do all the pre-op stuff, then they took him from us bawling.gif bawling.gif bawling.gif while he was still awake...that was the worst part...seeing him cry and reaching for me...oh man. The surgery should be like 15 min...and I swear by having them removed. He hasn't had an ear infection since, I swear it's because it all drains better without them.

kimberley replied: aww i think it will be harder on you than her. she won't even have time to panic they put you out so quickly. i would ask to be in recovery with her tho. when i woke up alone, that kinda sucked.

p&pt that it all goes well. hug.gif

mckayleesmom replied: I had mine done when I was about 7....It was fine. I remember screaming my tush off once we left my parents at the yellow line for as far as they could go, but once in there I had a great doctor who calmed me down. He told me to watch him blow up this balloon and count backwards from 20.....I don't remember what number I got to, but I was out pretty fast. I woke up with a sore throat and had it for a couple days and then it was fine.

kit_kats_mom replied: katherine did great having hers out. The docs took her away and she was put to sleep in the back. She was jumping on the couch screaming two days after the surgery. I really kind of hoped for a little longer recovery...for my sake. rolling_smile.gif

The biggest change we've seen in her is that she's eating much better!!

A&A'smommy replied: Alyssa has tubes put in when she was two when they took her back I had to make her go, they had originally brought a Little wagon and all kinds of "fun' stuff but none of it made her happy now though she would easily go with them (just a little persuasion from us) rolleyes.gif she will be fine it happens SO quick that she wont have much time to be upset hug.gif hug.gif

mummy2girls replied: jenna had her tonisls and adenoids taken out a year ago..they let me go into the operation room and hold her while they put the iv's in and while they put her under. so she fell asleep in my arms. Then i layed her on the table and left. The surgery was not long but we could not go see her until she was in the recovery room and awake. Its a scarey situation believe me i went through it many times and have to again thsi year with jenna for her second suregry! She will be ok... im nto sure inteh states but i know here in canada( well at least here) that you can demand to be there for the child until they go under... they actually want it so its a little less scarey for the child. And if you do go in beware that it happens instantly... jenna went under mid cry

skinkybaby replied: My oldest had tubes put in last summer. They gave her something to relax her and let me stay with her until it had fully kicked in. By then she was so goofy she didn't care what was going on. They also let her pick out the flavor of her gas and she thought that was fun. It was a lot harder on me than it was on her. Another thing that really helped- they had someone come by and they read her a special book about what was about to happen and she showed Grace all the tools and things they were going to use and let her see a set of tubes. That helped SO much!
She goes back to the ENT tomorrow to talk about her adenoids actually. Kids, God love them. They always keep you worrying!

DillsMommy replied: Dylan went to the ENT today and he is having his tonsils removed. I know how you feel, I'm SO nervous. sad.gif

Kirstenmumof3 replied: hug.gif Claudia had her adnoids taken out and she did fine. We were not allowed to go into the operating room either, the nurse just picked her up and off she went. I think she was about 1 1/2 when this was done. It's funny because every time Spencer had a procedure done in Toronto I was allowed to go in with him until he fell asleep and he was 8 & 9 when that all happened. Anyway afterwards they are limited to soft foods, no crackers or toast etc. But Claudia did really well. hug.gif Good Luck and I'm sure all will go well! hug.gif

Boys r us replied: Tanner had his out in September. His were so big they were blocking 95% of his nasal passage..he was basically breathing soley out of his mouth. The recovery was a piece of cake. He literally was back to school th next day...and his ENT said those were some of the biggest and hardest adnoids he's ever had to get out..he said he had to do a lot of digging and expected Tanner to be pretty sore. He was fine and ate a big mac and fries on the way home from the hospital! LOL

Now as for pushing to go back with her..I REALLY think it's best the way they do it. You know ow kids tend to be "tougher" for other people than their parents. If you were back there, she'd likely be a little more dramatic! Good Luck!!!

redchief replied: I don't think you'll be bothered as much as you think, Karen. She will still be awake when they take her back, but she'll be very relaxed and sleepy. I had my adenoids out when I was 3 so I don't remember it at all.
