The news - publicizing violence - and everything negative

AshleyRose wrote: Have you ever taken a step back and looked from an outside perspective at how screwed up the news is? We don't even watch it anymore... at all.

There is a loooooow percentage of GOOD news now a days. Everything is about murder, rape, violence, war, terrorism. Its sick!!!

Just try this... look and see how these murder cases or what not are almost made into a story. They show scenes from the murder and sometimes when they talk about kids getting hit by cars on their bikes they will show the torn up bike... What good does that do? It hurts to see that stuff... they use it almost as entertainment. I mean, its important to know what is going on in the world but we go into too much detail. Even the words they use are horrible.. they just put horrible images into your head. The news is a form of brainwash for everyone, I think. Your in constant fear because of it. News isn't like that in most places outside the US.

I mean look outside the box and tell me if you would let your kids watch the news? No way.. not me.

Okay I cannot finish the post because Hub is making me go eat my sub from quiznos...

what do you guys think about the news??

MissyKay2005 replied: I agree with you on that it is no good. I don't watch it ether. Acttually don't watch tv at all anymore. Nothing but junk on anymore. Sad it is!

gr33n3y3z replied: Only once in a while I see something good on the news thats even when I do watch it.
but you are right its almost all bad news
And My kids never really got into watching the news unless they had to for school.

My friend used to work for channel 6 in philadelphia during her internship and they thrived on bad news even more so for the 1st of the month to boost the ratings
that is so sad mad.gif

A&A'smommy replied: I couldn't agree with you more! I don't watch the news anymore because all it does is make me or dh angry. Its incredibly depressing and sad... sad.gif

mckayleesmom replied: I don't watch the news anymore either.....its getting kind of trashy IMO.

mammag replied: First of all............I want a Quiznos sub!!!!!!!

Okay, got that out of the way. I do let my kids watch the news. I want them to know (at least the older ones) what is going out there or they will be naive about the world which, imo, is dangerous.

Let's face it, that's what new is.....current events.... No one would watch if the newscasters got on there and said "there's nothing really going on today so we are going to discuss bird migration". Our local news here does cover any current local events but beyond that I'm not sure how you would go about having a newscast without the bad stuff. Now, I do think they go overboard showing stuff they shouldn't but that's how you get ratings and it is, after all, a business so........that's just the way of it.

I have times when I don't want to watch because it's too depressing but for the most part, I want to know all the bad that's happening around me. Like the highway shooter we had here, I knew not to drive that way and I knew when he was moving further or closer, kwim?

So......that's my take. But I see what you are saying, it can get depressing at times.

kit_kats_mom replied: I tend to agree. I haven't sat down to watch TV in over a month because I was getting so bothered by it.

I will sometimes turn on CNN while I'm working but I never actually watch it (the TV is behind my desk so I have to actually turn around to see it). I feel like I have to at least listen to what is going on in the world sometimes or else I will seem like some sort of wierdo when I try to hold a conversation. biggrin.gif

I would not let K watch the news yet but when she gets older, I suspect it will be a part of our daily life and we will just have to be choosey about which news programs she watches and then have discussions about media bias, violence, sensationalisim etc.

5littleladies replied: I don't usually watch the news, but I do keep informed per the internet (cnn, foxnews, etc). I agree it is depressing to see all the terrible things going on in the world but I also think it is important to keep up with what is going on.

jcc64 replied: I seldom get my news from t.v. b/c I believe real meaningful journalism no longer exists, outside of a few high quality programs like PBS' "Frontline". News, as covered by television, has become nothing more than another ratings vehicle, and so accordingly dictates what does and doesn't get covered. It most certainly explains why virtually everyone in the country is well versed on who Brad and Jenn and Tom and Katie are having sex with, but not too many people know or care about more mundane but critical issues like Social Security reform or foreign policy. The networks infantilize us by capitulating to the lowest common denominator. I am also very bitter that journalists no longer feel obligated to be the government's unofficial watchdog and stewards of our precious freedoms, and have instead become content to spit out whatever is fed to them by the spin machine.
And as far as violence and bad news is concerned, if they didn't get the ratings, they wouldn't be covering it, trust me. Didn't mean to go off on such a rant, but I believe televised "news" is a total sham, and is largely responsible for some very unfortunate changes in our society.

Maddie&EthansMom replied: Nope, I don't watch the news. DH does when he comes home at night. IMO you see worse things on the news than you do on public TV shows.

MommyToAshley replied: I like to stay informed and I will often "listen" to CNN or Fox News while I am working. I read a lot of my news on the net as well.

There is a lot of violence on the news, but unfortunately, that's what is really happening around us. I think the news stations could do a better job of showing some of the more positive events, and all stations could do a better job of focusing on social issues... and not just the "fluff" stories the local channels televise.

I don't let Ashley watch the news, but when she is older I will encourage her to do so.

luvbug00 replied: I Find the local news just sooo depressing. But I like CNN because it is more accurate and up to date. In south and central america the news is 10 times worse they showed all the beheadings that happend and kidnappings from the middle east. They have no sham to what they put on and rarely censor it. sad.gif

stanleygirl replied: This is a difference between the news I see on my Canadian channels as opposed to the news I see on some of my American channels. (Not trying to put anyone down, just something I've noticed)
I live in Winnipeg, so I don't know if it's just the fact that we are so small, but we hear a lot of political, personal interest and international news, during our six o clock news.
I used to watch CNN everyday, but it just got to be waaayy to depressing, so now I watch our local news, and read the news online, so I can choose what stories I want to know more about.

Josie83 replied: Its true Ashley. I do watch news to keep up with what's going on, but you're right there's never anything god. It scares me to think Cassie's growing up in a world like it sad.gif xx
