The OPP Shot my Sisters Dog!

Kirstenmumof3 wrote: sad.gif We're just heartbroken! Axel was a Husky cross and the most gentlest dog in the world. Lastnight he went off to play with another dog down the road from them (they live in the country), he does this often. He didn't come home and my sister just figured he would be back later. In the morning he still wasn't back, so she went down the road looking for him and calling his name. She couldn't find him, but again thought he would just come back home later. She went to work and while she was at work, her neighbour called and left a message asking her to come and pick up her dog. Then the OPP called and left a message telling her that there was a situation with her dog. Then the final message from the OPP was to call them immediately. My nephew was the one that got all the messages and called my sister at work. They had to tell her at work that they had shot her dog. She's not sure what happened, she will get answers tomorrow when the OPP come and talk to her. Right now my nephew (17) is just devistated. And my sister doesn't know how she's going to tell her DH (he is in Alberta working right now). Our whole family is so upset. I just can't believe this. My sister was told that she would not get the dogs remains back, because they would need to send his head for testing to see if he had rabbies. I feel just awful for my sister and her family and for poor Axel, who must have been so confused and scared! bawling.gif

cameragirl21 replied: omg, Kirsten, how awful! mad.gif sad.gif sleep.gif I have no idea what OPP means but whoever that is, they had no right to shoot someone's dog imo. I would be absolutely furious if someone shot my dog (if I had a dog). So sad for your family and the poor dog. sleep.gif sleep.gif

OPP is Ontario Provincial Police, by my guess - but it's just a guess.

Kirstenmumof3 replied:
thumb.gif Yes that is what OPP stands for Ontario Provincial Police. I'm just hearbroken. I loved Axel so much! I just hope that my sister gets answers soon, she's so sad!

stella6979 replied:
Well, if someone feels threatened by a dog, they have every right to defend themselves.
I am sorry to hear about Axel though and I hope they get the answers they're looking for. hug.gif

Kentuckychick replied:
You're right... and of course until the details come out no one really knows what happens. The dog may have been trying to attack someone or another animal, even out of fear and they would have to shoot it... or it may not be the case at all. My uncle is a cop and he had to shoot a bear once when it got hit by a car to put it out of it's misery. It sounds awful, but when he described the way the bear was crying... yeah...

I think that when owners of animals allow their animals to roam free even out in the country they take a huge risk. Anything can happen to the animal. I do hope they get the answers that they are looking for and that it wasn't an act of malice against the dog. We had a husky and she too was the sweetest dog in the world.

I'm sure questions will be answered

Boys r us replied: I'm so sorry Kirstin!

Hillbilly Housewife replied: Kisten, I'm so sorry.

In Canada, people and cops don't generally shoot animals as a means to protect themselves, guns are heavily restricted here, and there's mountains of paperwork each and every a gun is discharged by an officer. Dogs don't get shot because cops feel threatened, they are trained to get them in other ways, such as perhaps snapping their neck, or hitting their front nasal cavity hard enough to drive the bone into the brain. Cops don't shoot an animal just because it's there and someone's being a sissy about it. If a citizen was to shoot a dog, they'd be heavily fined and jailed... that's what we have animal control for, they can be called to "the scene" just about as quickly as EMS. We don't know the circumstances, but a growling dog is by no means a valid reason for a cop to open fire, and even were the dog attacking someone, shooting at it would be much much too high a risk unless they were up close... and by that point, might as well just snap it's neck, the hours of paperwork and the ensuing investigation isn't worth the fired bullet.

Again, Kirsten, I'm so sorry to hear that.

stella6979 replied:
Well, if I see a dog on the loose and it's approaching me and I have a gun, it's going to get shot and if that's being a sissy, than so be it. People are mauled and killed by dogs all the time. Better safe than sorry.
I'm not saying I don't feel bad about the dog, but no one knows the circumstances yet. If in fact it was a malicious act than I do hope some action is taking against the OPP.

Hillbilly Housewife replied:
No no - you're misunderstanding me I think... it's all fine and good for where you live, it seems acceptable to shoot animals if you have a gun and you feel threatened because it's coming towards you...

Just saying - in Canada, for a cop to shoot a dog, it's really gotta be wayyy serious, a dog coming at someone is NOT a valid reason to shoot a dog. In canada. Especially not by a member of the police force.

Oh, I get cha. wink.gif
I guess living right outside Detroit makes me a little more cautious about dogs. There are lots of strays around here and I don't trust any of them. I even take a knife with me when Avery and I take our walks.
I have a pretty strong opinion about dogs, maybe that's why this thread got to me. I've actually seen my friend's son get attacked by their so-called family dog and had to watch as my friend beat the dog with a bat til he let go of him. His son survived, but had to have 30 stitches to the face. dry.gif

Thanks Rocky. smile.gif
Didn't mean to hijack the thread or anything, just got a little carried away.

Kirstenmumof3 replied: Just some brief information. My sister didn't allow Axel to roam free, he was always chained up. It was just in the evening when he went to visit her friends dog. And he always came back. The OPP still have not come out to talk to them yet and since Monday is a holiday she will have to wait until Tuesday to get answers. Why this happened nobody knows.
