Tara or anyone - HELP - Laila

moped wrote: Ok, so she started coughing and getting Jacks nasty cold today....now the cough worries me a bit. Sort of like a bark. She isn;t coughing non stop but every so often. She seems to be breathing fine. She isn't unhappy and not running a fever at all. I put a cool mist humidifier in her room. What else can I do? COuld it be croup or something like that?

Jack had a nasty cough too, so I hope it is the same thing, but I am a bit concerned about it.

PrairieMom replied: Could be croup, Could just be a bad cough too. hug.gif I would watch her breathing for a while, if she is comfortable and not having breathing issues, then she is probably fine. But, breathing stuff isn't anything to mess around with, so if you are nervous, get her checked out. hug.gif darn cold and flu season. sad.gif

boyohboyohboy replied: It does sound like croup..
My kids get it almost monthly thru out the winter..
we use the cool mist humidifier in the room and also putting them in the bath room with the warm steam helps..
and warm drinks too.

Its usually gone in three nights..and they dont have the cough during the day..not that barky cough anyways..
its a distinct sound.

as long as she isnt wheezing then she is doing well. when caleb had the croup really bad he had a sharp loud whistle to his breathing that meant he needed to go to the er for help..he also had asthma though.

moped replied: I feel that it is - so it isn't serious? I mean she isn't crying or anything

I worry that the hunidifier is making her room damp - perhaps turn it off when I go to bed??

boyohboyohboy replied: our dr always told us that keeping the humidity between 35-40 was ok
and to use it not more then three nights..then you run the risk of causing mold other wise..
we always found that the steam worked better from the shower with the croup and the warm liquids.

MommyToAshley replied: I was always told that the "bark" like cough was croup, but Ashley has never had it so I am not much help. I do know that if she starts having trouble breathing, they say to put their head in the freezer and let them breathe the cold air. But, I would definitely get her checked out if it doesn't improve or gets any worse.

hug.gif Hope she's feeling better soon. hug.gif

boyohboyohboy replied: most of the time there isnt anything to give for just croup..
unless she cant breath then steroids help...but I think most kids dont need those.

and dont give her benadryl or anything like that for a runny nose while she has it or it just makes it worse and drys her out.

luvmykids replied:
That is what our pedi said too, or going out on the porch if the air was cool. I can't remember why cool air instead of warm, but it worked.

Nina J replied: Sounds like croup.

I would probably take her to the doctor anyway. They will be able to tell you for sure. I don't like coughs, lol. I saw this show about whooping cough and so any cough makes me worried rolleyes.gif

mom21kid2dogs replied:
thumb.gif We were told to take Olivia outside for 10-15 minutes every day in the cold air until the coughing stops when she had croup. She only had it once but the cough is VERY distinctive. If it was too cold, we were told to do about 5 minutes then later try steam.
Hope she's better soon! hug.gif

mummy2girls replied: it could be wither. usually with croup( jenna got it all the time) the barky cough comes out more at night. The cool mist humidifier works wonderful for that. Just watch that she isnt having problems taking in breathes. With jenna she was breathingf unny one afternoon after catching a cold. so i lifted her shirt and i could see her skin being sucked in between her ribs. so i took her int o the er. and they diagnosed her with croup( after ruling out pnuemonia) Just keep an eye on her breathing. but cool mist works, taking her out in the cold weather at night, or putting her in teh bathroom and letting the shower run hot water to make a mist.

PrairieMom replied:
Cool air takes away inflammation. Inflammation in the throat is what causes the barkey sound.
We have parents all the time who rush their barkey kids into the ER only to find that they are better after the ride to the hospital in a cold car, and winter air.

How is miss L doing this morning? Did the night go okay?

Boo&BugsMom replied: Ugh! I hate croup. rolleyes.gif dry.gif Tanner has had it multiple times in the past. The barky cough will go away within a short time, but she may have a normal cough for up to 3 weeks. Tanner's always seemed to linger after the barkiness went away at least for a couple weeks...grr. The cold air will def. help, like Tara explained. wink.gif And you don't even need to use the freezer this time of year where you live. thumb.gif It's definitly annoying, but it's nothing to worry about unless you seem to think it's causing her problems breathing enough. Just keep an eye on her. hug.gif

Is she doing any better today?

Danalana replied: Awwww...poor Laila sad.gif

moped replied:
She is good, I didn't hear a peep out of her all night, but of course I listened very closely. I checked the humidifier a few times and all was well. Tom says she is happy and eating well but barking still. I also woke up with it.
I honestly don't think she needs to go to the doctor.........but I just hate the sound of it

jcc64 replied: We had that croupy cough virus over Christmas week. Corey wound up taking three doses of steroids b/c she was wheezing. The virus hung around for the better part of a week, though the croupy cough went away as soon as she took the steroids. Hope she heals soon!
