Swaddling!

Boo&BugsMom wrote: Wanted to start a new thread about it since it came up. Aiden likes to be swaddled. We got this swaddler thing at the store, but it seems to be a bit on the short side. What did you find was best to use for swaddling? Something that was made for swaddling or just a nice regular ole blanket?

moped replied: My mom made me a blanket for Jack for swaddling htat was made of a light jersey - HUGE - he was swaddled until abuot a year!

LOL

There are pics in a thread on here somewhere

luvmykids replied: I only had a few blankets that I liked for swaddling, don't ask me why, but they were just perfect in some way laugh.gif

Jamison'smama replied: I had a tough time finding just the right thing. I finally found 2 square blankets from the Gap and I had my mom make a couple of larger ones. The trick seems to be finding a square blanket--I like those out of T-shirt material so they are a little stretchy.

Kaitlin'smom replied: I to used a plan old balanket and had a couple favorite that just worked well for her.

PrairieMom replied: i used the one from the store for a while, the ones with the bear heads on the velcro tabs, but my favorite blanket to use is made out of t-shirt material. Something with a little stretch to it. I had one from gymboree for Ben, but made a few for ally . IMO they have to streatch so you cam get them wrapped tight enough.

BabyOwen427 replied: I went to the fabric store and bought 1 1/4 yards of some cute fabrics and just hemmed around the edges. It made large recievin blankets that worked perfectly for me for swaddling. And they were also great for tossing over you while nursing. I usually got some flannel and some cottons. I also make them to give to my friends at their baby showers and they love them too.

KingMom replied: I POSTED THIS IN ANOTHER THREAD AND THOUGHT I'D COPY IT OVER...

The theory is that they can't control their movements at that age, so when the accidentally swing their arms around it freaks them out, and makes them mad. :dunno:Thats what the book i read said anyway.

My ped actually told me this. Said they can't control the movement and they can be almost asleep and they raise their arm and it "startles" them and bam, they are awake again and mad!

I used a swaddling thing from babies r us. Worked okay, but my ped really recommended one called The Miracle Blanket. They didn't sell it locally and she was getting to big (she was a big girl and still is). You can get them online or on ebay for $20-$30 dollars.

Check it out. http://www.miracleblanket.com/index.htm

I think he said that it somehow had straps that helped keep thier arms in, he described it as a straight jacket, but said most babies love it b/c they won't startle themselves and sleep for much longer periods of time, resulting in a much happier baby when they are awake. I sure wish I would have tried it when Lauren was younger and smaller instead of crying through the months of colic!

~Roo'sMama~ replied: For Andrew I used regular receiving blankets - the ones they sell in stores were a bit small though I liked the ones my mom made better because they were bigger. Allie never has liked to be swaddled so I gave up on it with her after a couple days.

MommytoTommy replied: we used regular receiving blankets, but tommy never really liked to be swaddled. he liked his arms free. but he did like when we swaddled him from under the arms. he LOVED that till he would kick it off!

boyohboyohboy replied: I must be the only one who never really got the hang of figuring out how to swaddle. I used the receiving blankets, but they just never seemed to stay tight enough to hold him in there..maybe the blankets were to small.
does anyone like the ones from the store that are made just for this?
I was thinking about investing in one in the near future.

Twelve Volt Man replied:
Thanks for the information. I found a new with tags Miracle Blanket on Ebay for $25.00. For that price, I'll give it a chance.
