Stupid Mutt.

PrairieMom wrote: Alright, my 80 pound dog swallowed a tooth pick tonight. It was holding a roll up sandwich together and my dog swiped it off the table and ate it. I am sure he swallowed the tooth pick, whole. so, what the heck do I do about it? usually when he eats stuff he isn't supposed to, like pieces of plastic toy or something I induce vomititng with Hydrogen peroxide, but I am worried that the toothpick might do some damage on the way back up. so do I let nature take its course? Hoping it won't hurt anything on the way out, or do I need to call the vet, make him puke? Anyone know?

Bee_Kay replied: I would absolutely call the vet.

If the toothpick punctures his digestive tract (either puking it up or it going through him), that could be very bad.

My3LilMonkeys replied: I would call the vet just to be safe.

A&A'smommy replied:
ITA!!!

MyLuvBugs replied: Definately call the vet and get him in there ASAP. Whole toothpicks can cause SOOO much damage to the digestive track. If he can't get it thrown up, they'll have to do emergancy surgery to get it out. sad.gif Poor Baby!! KUP!! hug.gif hug.gif

CantWait replied: Hope he's ok. KUP. sad.gif

PrairieMom replied: dry.gif I'll give then a call when they open this morning.

siblingtoolivia replied: Aren't 80 pound dogs wonderful!! Call the vet, mine ate 1/2 a turkey breast once, bones and all.......surprisingly she must have a gut of steel it never bothered her but you never know a toothpick could be pretty damaging...KUP

What kind of dog? Mine is a German Shepherd....

luvbug00 replied: yes call ye vet!! it can punture! hope the doggie is ok!

PrairieMom replied:
He's a black lab/boarder collie mix. He eats every thing. Usually he just pukes it up on his own. wacko.gif He is acting fine today, cold wet nose, and wagging tail and all that. He hates me tho, so now that DH has gone to work Puppy, (Lycos) has gone to his corner to lay down and wait for DH to return. dry.gif

PrairieMom replied: Alright, I called the Vet, and they said that we are probably okay, just watch for coughing, vomiting or diarrhea. That was after they laughed at me. rolleyes.gif Stupid Mutt. Lets just say that they know us at the vets office. rolleyes.gif
Poor mutt. I hate to imagine what it would be like to Poo out a toothpick! ohmy.gif blink.gif

Anyway, it occurs to me that y-all haven't met Lycos yet, so here he is. The Picture is a little old, he is a little more grey now.

siblingtoolivia replied: He is adorable, what do you mean he hates you? He doesn't appear able to hate anyone......!!

TheOaf66 replied: since it is not real hard wood, it will bend and break especially when wet it will get soggy and soft while it remain in his belly, I would suggest to just let nature take its course, when it comes out it will be surrounded by softness as well (gross I know) so I think you're fine. thumb.gif

PrairieMom replied:
He is a very sweet dog, and is very gentle, but he was my baby until the Boy arrived. After that he started giving me the silent treatment. Plus, I am the one that had the honor of bathing him, and giving him his medicine, so that makes me the mean one as well. He won't play with me any more. It has gotten worse since Baby Girl arrived. Thankfully he is super good with the kids. wacko.gif

gr33n3y3z replied: Oh I love him he looks like a great dog
I hope he just leaves the food alone with the tooth picks

AlexsPajamaMama replied: Oooh pooor doggie!

Sarah&Mackenzie replied: He's cute!!!

3xsthefun replied: Poor dog! sad.gif He does look like a sweet dog!

MyLuvBugs replied: Awwwww!! He seems like a sweetie! wub.gif But I understand the silent treatment after kids arrive. My cats are the exact same. I swear they glare at me sometimes. blink.gif

luvmykids replied: wub.gif Aw, he looks so sweet!

If it makes you feel any better that they laughed at you, I swore once that Bogie swallowed a battery and after xrays showed he didn't, I was sure one of the kids did (AAA's are pretty skinny you know!). Turned out it was in the leg of the coffee table but for some stupid reason I was in complete panic that one of them swallowed it. rolleyes.gif

Ashlynn's Mommy replied: How is your dog doing? wavey.gif

PrairieMom replied: he's totally fine. DH is home, so his tail is waggin again. rolleyes.gif
