Stocking Question - spin off of LeaAnn's thread

Boo&BugsMom wrote: I have been trying to grasp what some people do for St. Nick (the 5th) and on Christmas morning. What we do it leave the boys one present that night for them to open in the morning (on the 5th), in the stocking from St. Nick. Then on Christmas Eve Santa fills them up with lots of goodies to open with their presents Christmas morning. My parents really never did St. Nick night so perhaps that is why I always fill them up for Christmas and not St. Nick night. It wasn't until us kids were older we asked why all our friends got a present from St. Nick and we didn't, that they started to put a present in them the night of the 5th, but still did full stockings for Christmas.

Our Lil' Family replied: I've never heard of getting anything from St. Nick

Anthony275 replied: never heard of it. i thought santa was st.nick

amynicole21 replied: I thought Santa was St. Nick too! Santa puts some stuff in ours, but mostly we do toiletries and candy in stockings (toiletries for grown ups anyway - shampoo, razors, etc). We never do real gifts in there.

luvmykids replied: I never heard of doing anything on the 5th either. Stockings are for candy and little goodies like lip gloss, small toys, etc.

MommyToAshley replied: Same as others... St. Nick is Santa to us. And he leaves candies and small goodies in the stockings for us on Christmas Eve when he brings the other presents.

Is your family from Germany by any chance? When I lived there, St. Nick was a big deal and left present in the stocking. Isn't there something about a shoe too? I forget, it's been so long ago. blush.gif

boyohboyohboy replied: jeannie can you explain what st nick is on the 5th?
we always thought st nick was santa and we only put stuff in the stockings on christmas eve...to open on the 25th.

Calimama replied: Santa puts the gifts in the night before just like the other presents. wink.gif

lovemy2 replied: Never knew St. Nick to be anyone other than Santa tongue.gif

Cece00 replied: How about only Santa leaves anything on Christmas....that isnt an option.

ETA: According to what I can find on the internet, St. Nick & Santa Claus are one in the same. And St. Nick was never actually named a saint (canonised). Interesting.

>>The popular North American form Santa Claus originated as a mispronunciation of Dutch Sinterklaas, which in turn is a contracted form of Sint Nicolaas (Saint Nicholas).

Anthony275 replied: that's e xactly what i thought it was dito.gif

mom21kid2dogs replied: We don't celebrate St. Nicholas day in our family other than to note it. My best friend, however, was the daughter of an AF Col and spent a large part of her childhood in Germany. She has a son named Nick and it's a big holiday in her house. She doesn't have any association with Christmas stockings, though. She does a ruten (pronounced "rootin"~I have NO IDEA how it is really spelled) for both of her children. It's a fairly large sized stick with gifts and candy tied to it with strings. I know she always purchases gold coins in a purse as a part of it and lots of imported German chocolates. She's the only person I've ever known who really celebrates the day.

Boo&BugsMom replied:
WOW...we are outsiders! laugh.gif It is advertised EVERYWHERE about St. Nick here. I am actually not sure how it all started and I am not for certain that Santa and St. Nick are the same or different around here. Tanner thinks they are different people, but I tell him if he's been good that St. Nick will leave a present and if he's been naughty he gets coal and will need to shape up if he wants presents under the tree for Santa. It's almost like keeping the kids in check before Christmas time. laugh.gif Sometimes people fill up the stocking and only use the stocking for St. Nick, and others only put in one small item. Everyone does it differently around here. At our Walgreen's there is a huge side advertising the 5th! biggrin.gif

Boo&BugsMom replied:
That's why I put "Other, please explain". wink.gif

Boo&BugsMom replied: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Nicholas

Look under and scroll down to "Celebration in the United States". We live in Milwaukee by the way. laugh.gif

coasterqueen replied: Thought they were one in the same. blush.gif

Santa puts stuff in their stocking when he leaves presents Christmas Eve -- usually candy, small toys, toiletries, jewelry, etc. This year the girls are getting a very small amount of candy, some Disney Princess wash rags (the kind that expand when wet happy.gif ), Princess hair brushes, battery operated tooth brushes, and bath salts.

lisar replied: I choose other:

Santa fills them christmas eve and the kids get them christmas morning.

PrairieMom replied: Santa does ours on christmas, or the day we designate to be Christmas, since I work holidays.

mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: DH's parents used to do Sinter Claus on the 5th. I probably spelled that wrong, but in Holland, they leave carrots out for Sinter Claus and his horse. And I believe the kids get something. There is a whole story behind it, but I don't know it exactly. We don't do it with our kids though. And I of course (being half Jewish) didn't do that growing up. I always got a stocking filled from Santa on Christmas Eve/morning. We will do the same for our kids, although this year I'm opting out of doing stockings because we feel the kids are still too young to really care.

holley79 replied: This was a site I found.

St Nick

I never would have looked it up had you not brought it up. I just called a friend of mine who is German and she told me I was a moron for not knowing. emlaugh.gif She said it's a very HUGE deal at her house each and every year. I told her that I was getting jipped because St Nick doens't visit me. happy.gif

Brias3 replied: St. Nick was a big deal in the kids' school when we were still in Brussels but at home, we've always stuck with the tradition Bruce and I are familiar with and that is Santa putting small gifts in the stockings on Christmas Eve with the rest of the presents he leaves.

luvbug00 replied: saint nick puts the goodies in our clean shoes ( preferably the biggest boots you got!) they HAVE to be clean. Santa does the stockings on x-mas.

Boo&BugsMom replied:
AH HA!!! I'm not alone!!! laugh.gif

A&A'smommy replied: I can't believe I didn't know about this... I was born in Germany and my parents were VERY much into the German culture they even learned that language (partly because I was bilingual). I knew who saint Nicholas was but I really had thought that Santa Clause was a americanized version of him. wink.gif

My2Beauties replied: Wow, learn something new every day, I also thought they were one in the same.

luvbug00 replied:

my mom is german and my Oma POUNDED it into us. lol! lars is german too and so it was pounded in on that side too!

~Roo'sMama~ replied: I always thought St. Nick and Santa were the same person too... there are so many different names for Santa Clause I just figured that was one of them. I never knew that the 5th was a holiday either. blush.gif So I voted other... we do stockings on Christmas. happy.gif
