Still stumped on gift ideas for Christmas

MommyToAshley wrote: for Ashley...HELP! What are you getting your 8 year old girls?

coasterqueen replied: iPod Touch which I'm getting FREE.....my boss gave myself and coworker a bunch of credit card points so I got that for Kylie. happy.gif

She's getting a Memorex Sing and Stand because the girl LOVES to sing 24/7. I figure she can set her video camera on the tripod and put the iPod touch in the Memorex Sing and Stand and record herself singing over and over and over until I go insane. laugh.gif

An outfit, some arts and crafts, guitar, gosh now I'm forgetting what else. blush.gif Not too much more, though, honestly.

One thing we actually thought about getting her is a Kindle or something similar. Especially since she reads books 24/7. We decided to wait at least one more year before doing that. I dunno, though, maybe that's an idea for Ashley???

For Kylie she's just all about reading, singing, and playing piano. So she's pretty simple.

moped replied: Yeah what about a kindle???

mom21kid2dogs replied: I picked up Olivia one of those flip cameras (but not that brand) on an Amazon for $69. Does she have one of those? Wish Olivia was harder to buy for. Finding myself wanting to buy way more than we get usually.

MommyToAshley replied: She has an iPod touch and a bloggie camera (similar to the flip camera). Those were Christmas presents last year. We have an iPad and she sometimes uses it for e-books, but I think she prefers to read an actual book.

Karen, she wants a guitar too, but I want her to get further along on the piano first before starting a new instrument.

She's really not into clothes either, except shoes. There is a pair of shoes she wants, so I will probably get that for her.

Those were good ideas though.

coasterqueen replied: Microscope? Telescope? Dee Dee, if you are having this much trouble now......I sure hope you don't when she's a teenager! laugh.gif

I know Kylie likes science experiments and stuff and Dh wanted to get her a microscope 2 years ago but I didn't think it was the time then. I would have gotten it for her this year if we didn't do the Touch.

MommyToAshley replied: We have a family telescope, and Rod wants to upgrade to a better one, but that will probably be a family gift. She did actually ask for science experiments, but we checked a book out of the library and just did some experiments out of the book.

By the way, congrats on the points for the iTouch... woot!

Thanks though, please keep the ideas coming!

luvbug00 replied: im getting mya science stuff too.

maybe just some more of the things she likes that she is running out of?
like my has those t-shirt paint things that she uses to decorate her clothes.
or craft stuff she runs out of?
or maybe a make up kit for dress up with a real vanity mirror?
or a sugar bear emlaugh.gif ?

jcc64 replied: Corey wants a digital camera--that's all she asked for. I'm filling in with the Glee wii singing thing--she loves Glee--and a Shawn Johnson gymnastics wii game. Corey's a hardcore fashionista, so I'm hunting around for some kid-friendly fashion design software and some art supply kits that allow her to design "outfits." She also wants a disco ball to hang from her ceiling--she'd make a great drag queen, don't you think? : )
We like to give play or concert tix in my family. This year, I'm taking Corey and my mom to see "The Nutcracker" performed by a local ballet co.--much cheaper than going into NYC, and for Corey--just as good. We'll probably also do a girls' day out in NYC--go to a museum, American Girl Doll Store, out to lunch, and hit the make up counters at the big dept. stores. Honestly, that's the kind of stuff she likes the best--time together.
What about some old school stuff like a hula hoop or a pogo stick, Dee Dee? Corey has both--Steve bought her a high quality hula hoop--and there's a HUGE difference between this one and the kind you find in regular toy stores. It's heavy, and somehow balanced so that it's much easier to use, and it's AWESOME exercise for everyone. And the pogo stick--someone gave that to her last year, and she's on that thing all the time, even in the house.
I'll keep thinking.

stella6979 replied: Board games
Scrapbooking kit
Metal Detector

coasterqueen replied: Ok, I'm stumped then. tongue.gif At least she doesn't want a tuba. That is what Megan asked Santa for....a tuba! I told her Santa is not going to be able to do that and she's pretty upset about it. wacko.gif I tried finding a pretend tuba, but no luck. dry.gif

MommyToAshley replied: I like the metal detector idea, but I wonder if it would be better around Easter as she wouldn't be able to use it until spring. I have no idea what they cost though.

PrairieMom replied: You guys are all to high tech for me. I got Ben a pot holder loom, and I am going to get him a little sewing machine. What about something like that?

moped replied:
What is a pot holder loom?

bluebear replied: A loom is a special type of board that you make square patches on, like a potholder or a dish rag. You can find that at any craft store.
What about a gift card to the movies?

stella6979 replied: A spa day for her and a friend to get their hair and nails done?

MommyToAshley replied:
Here's a link: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000GKXWZ...ASIN=B000GKXWZO

Ashley got this for Christmas a few years ago. She made everyone pot holders when she first got it and made little purse from it. It's cute, but she doesn't use it much any more.

coasterqueen replied: If you go with sewing machine go with a regular one, not the small kids ones that you can get for $20-$40. It'll last longer. thumb.gif Does she like to sew, Dee Dee? If so I think that's a great idea as Tara said!

Kylie is taking sewing lessons starting this weekend. She's already learned to sew buttons, made me some octopus doll thingy which is cute. Not sure what else she will learn, but I'm sending my coat with her to sew buttons on. laugh.gif rolling_smile.gif I know she'll learn to use the sewing machine too. thumb.gif

MommyToAshley replied:
She wants to sew, but I don't even know how to sew. Where is Kylie taking lessons? I may look into that... good idea.

coasterqueen replied:
Yeah, I don't know how to sew either. Like I said I'm gonna have Kylie sew the buttons on my coat for me. laugh.gif You can usually take lessons at any fabric store, but Ryan's mother offered to give her lessons. She used to be a seamstress at one time in her life happy.gif and she makes beautiful things out of nothing. She had the girls one night a few weeks ago and taught the girls how to sew these octopus stuffed animals and sew buttons on clothes. They LOVED it. So she set up a sewing center in her basement and Kylie starts lessons this Saturday. Kylie is super excited and I feel blessed I know someone that has the patience to teach her. wub.gif Megan will take lessons after Kylie. My MIL didn't want to teach both at same time. She's offered to teach me, too, but I'm not sure we'd get along after that so some day I'll go to JoAnn Fabrics and have them teach me. laugh.gif If you are interested in lessons I'd definitely check out a fabric store. I've seen some that do children lessons. thumb.gif

mom21kid2dogs replied: Sewing is a wonderful skill to know, even if it's just pretty basic stuff like buttons and zippers. The neighbor I grew up next to was a seamstress and she taught me because her daughter was so not interested! laugh.gif 4H has a nice sewing program here as does the Extension Office. Olivia's school had a sewing club last year and she loved it! They've also done some sewing in her Girl Scout troop. I also second the suggestion to Tara of a basic regular machine over a kids one. thumb.gif

Dee Dee, try to keep in mind that most kids take away more from the "experience" of Christmas and all the traditions of it rather than the gift part of it. I couldn't tell a single gift from every Christmas I had as a child but I do remember them as it being a special day because my parents made it that way. I remember years that my parents would sit us down with the Penny's catalog and paper to have us write our lists and some years mine only had 2 or 3 things on it. I just wasn't big into want. I really suspect that Ashley is the same way. Whatever she gets will make her smile! hug.gif

MommyToAshley replied:
I know you are right Cheryl.... she told me the other day that she would be ok she just got a box saying that Santa gave toys to kids that didn't have anything. We watched a show about the homeless the other day and it really hit home with her. While I know she was sincere and I was very touched (and I will have her help me pick out a children's charity to donate to), the other part of me knows that she is only a kid for a short amount of time and I get such enjoyment out of watching the surprise on her face Christmas morning. I know it is more than gifts, but I still would like to get her something special.

coasterqueen replied:
Dee Dee, does she collect anything? I know you said you wanted to get her something special........the year Ryan was in New Orleans for three months, he did some of his own Christmas shopping. That year he started a tradition for the girls of buying them a snow globe every Christmas. They LOVE LOVE getting them every year at Christmas. We first started out buying Disney Snow globes and this year they are getting Horse ones since they love horses. Maybe some type of thing she can start collecting that you can buy that can be a special tradition every Christmas.?

lisar replied: I dont know know Ashley so its hard for me to think of things she might want. lexi asked for a Rock and Style hairbrush it was only $20.00 so I of course grabbed it. I am not sure if Ashley is into that stuff though.

its a hairbrush but it also plays music and you can sign into the microphone with the songs. IDK Lexi wanted it. Other than that, all the items I can think of are already listed.

Make her make you a list of items.

MyBlueEyedBabies replied: My kids really didn't want anything this year (yea)

Katy wanted a Barbie... that was all she said. She has an ipod and a laptop, she does want a nook But dh has been eyeing an android tablet for a while so she will probably get my nook at some point and i will upgrade to the nook color so he can play with it smile.gif

Maddie&EthansMom replied:
Oh my gosh these were all such GREAT ideas for Maddie. She and Corey sound a lot alike. smile.gif

Maddie&EthansMom replied: All Maddie wants is horseback riding lessons. tongue.gif What about a scooter? A new bike?
