Shady landloard - ranting and venting

J-rod wrote: Well i will try to make this as short as possible:

My landlord (who i used to work with at the Ford Dealership) has always been a little shady and confusing, but even more so lately. He first told me i could rent the house for a while and if i liked it then i could buy it from him for XXX amount. Well after living there a month or so and talking with my dad and my fiance' i decided not to buy the house at all. just rent until something better comes along. Well he was always pushing me to buy it and asking if iwas ready, etc. i told him im not in the position to buy a house right now. He then that night called his loan officer for his new house and got a payment figured for me at that house, including all insurance and stuff. i thought that was messed up. it was gonna be about $40 cheaper a month..but again i didnt want to buy that house. so i told him no and began looking for a place to move. we have been getting homes and land books, newspaper, even got a realtor. well he then changed his tone saying they decided not to sell the house as they want to keep me in it. blah blah blah. so he starts compaining about making anough $ and that his new house payment is XX dollars and my rent is 1/2 his payment, and how things are tough for him. (which i know is BS) well what really has put me over the edge this weekend is he came into my house and left a note for me to call him..instead of calling me. i know he looked around cause he mentioned us looking for a place to move to. (he saw the house books and realtor info) well even though he is my landlord arent i entitled to some privacy? i mean WTH? this sint the first time i know he has been in there. i can tell when things are moved. and he once mentioned the alphabet letters on the fridge. (my fiance is also a teacher for an after-school program). Anyways....ALSO...he told me he would finish painting the new closet in the master bedroom, which he never did and left supplies all over. He also said he'd finish hanging the drywall in the stairway to the garage..never been done, and i think something is wrong with the furnace because: the gas company refused to light it due to a cracked burner. i told the landlord and he said it was just inspected 10 months ago and all was fine. so he called that company back out and they cleaned and inspected it and said it was fine. so he (landlord) went out and lit the furnace. because i had been living there for 3 days with no heat or hot water, etc. now when im home i hear a loud bang and then a couple seconds later the furnace kicks on. there is no way im bringing my fiance and our baby into this house as it is. growl.gif this could be a really nice house it all these things werent done with a half-assed job.

sorry this wasnt short at all. LOL

what do you think i should do? and am i entitled to some privacy even though im renting?

Bee_Kay replied: Wow.
Of course you are entitled to privacy!!

He sounds like a worm! I'd move the heck outta there ASAP! (if you are in the position to do so)!

mckayleesmom replied: Is he actually going INTO the house when you are not there? I think that is illegal isn't it? I would definantly be putting some money aside to get the he-double hockey sticks out of there. It also sounds to me that he is looking to raise your rent in the near future. BTW..if the house would be 40 dollars cheaper if you bought it...then how is he paying double that and out money? That doesn't make any sense.

Bee_Kay replied: I'd look up Renters Rights that apply to the state you live in.

J-rod replied:
yes coming in while im not home. (for sure once.. i think 2-3 times.)

his financial numbers are based on his new house being 1,000/month. and my rent is just under 500/month. the house im living in he owns free and clear. no lien on it.

Kaitlin'smom replied: I get out while you can, before he make the choise for you.

MamaJAM replied: Well - when we rented I know it was legal for the landlord or an employee of the landlord to enter the home even when we were not there - BUT - they were required by law to leave a note saying someone had been inside.

Definately - I'd get out of there asap....if you have to, put most of your stuff in stoarge and rent a small apartment on a month-to-month lease until you can find a decent place to live and stay.

Good luck!

J-rod replied: i started packing up the garage sunday morning. kinda stinks though cause i havent even fully unpacked yet, well i guess that makes it easier. i know i DO NOT want our baby in this house, she agrees. we actually have an appt with our realtor tomorrow to look at anohter house.

C&K*s Mommie replied: GOOD LUCK with any new place that you get, and GOOD RIDDANCE to this landlord.

J-rod replied: its a shame..he was all nice and friendly to me while working there, then when i rented he became pushy and shady. makes me regret the whole thing, except i got closer to my girl. smile.gif

i left ford and now it got worse. hope i find something soon. all the mechanics warned me not to rent from him. oh well. hind sight is always 20/20.

Tylersmommy replied: your in my prayers:hug:

C&K*s Mommie replied: I hope that you have all your T's crossed and your I's dotted, since he can be this shady & pushy with you now- you never know if he may come after you with a civil suit over something frivolous.

Glad that you were able to have the best thing come of this craziness, becoming closer to your fiance' and creating a family too.

J-rod replied: yea he had me sign a month to month lease. but "forgot" to give me a copy. luckily for me i went in and got it off the desk and made me a copy.

dont know if that was intentional or not. either way i CMA.

USMCwife replied: When we lived in our apartmemt, someone came in and put up a new blind in my daughters room, I was very upset that someone just waltzed right in w/ out calling, and they didnt leave a note either or anything!
I called the apartment manager and she said that the maintence man probably went in and changed it, I told her that I wasnt comfortable with someone going in and out of my home w/ me not there. My husband was in the Marine Corp at the time and was out of the state. I asked her what if I had money laying out and some of it disappeared, or what if I was in the shower and walked out nekkid and there was a strange man there. She said that she understood and that it wouldnt happen again.
