Printing digital photos / keeping them on CD/DVD - this may have been asked before

coasterqueen wrote: We keep all of our digital photos on the computer hard drive, plus we keep them on 2 different DVD/CD's - one goes to the lock box at the bank and one we keep on hand at home. Once a full year is done it's deleted off the hard drive for space reasons.

I spoke to a few friends of mine that said you should still print out all your photos because over time DVD/CD's will not last - they get corrupt. Anyone know any truth to this?

What do you do? I'm weighing all of this before going back and printing every single photo I have on DVD/CD from 2002 until now - that's why I'm asking. happy.gif

mom21kid2dogs replied: I've been told, too, that CD/DVD backups are not going to last the test of time. One consideration is that they may not be useable technology in 20 years in addition to the possible corruption issue. Printing is the best option to preseve them forever~Cd/Dvd are akin to keeping a negative with old print film. Hard drive back up copies are a good alternative.

Is it possible to just go through and print the ones you can't stand the thought of losing? If it's any consolation, I'm in your boat, too. We just started printing 25 pictures a week until we get them caught up. hug.gif

coasterqueen replied:
I think that's what I'm going to do. Just print so many per pay day until I get caught up. I'll print all the past ones until now through somewhere like Walgreens and the rest from here on out I'll do at home.

MommyToAshley replied: We have them on hard drive, a hard drive back-up and a DVD back-up. I never erase them off the hard drive -- we just keep buying bigger hard drives, LOL. We keep one hard drive back up at my MIL's house.

On the flip side, I also scan in pictures that were not taken digitally. For example, the Easter Bunny pic taken at the mall. I only have a print of that, and I like to have a copy on my hard drive as well.

Kaitlin'smom replied: I have some printed but all of them are backed up and backed up again. I dont erase either just buy bigger or more HD's laugh.gif

coasterqueen replied: Well I talked it over with Dh and he thinks we should also put them on our external hard drive. BUT hard drives can fail, too, so I think I'll continue to do the CD thing. I'm just trying to decide whether to print them all out, too. wacko.gif

Anthony275 replied: why can't you just upload them to photobucket or yahoo?

coasterqueen replied:
I'm not sure what that would do. I could do that but what I'm trying to do is preserve my photos for the future and for future generations.

moped replied: I have the same problem with digital pics..........I have been loading my faves on photobucket

A&A'smommy replied: actually your friend is right cds/dvds will not last you would be better of getting and external hard drive and keeping them on that at your bank.

AlexsPajamaMama replied: I have mine on snapfish.com
and every so often I print my favorite ones and have them in photo albums. I also have them on cd.

~Roo'sMama~ replied: I didn't know that about CD's/DVD's, but it makes sense. We have ours backed up on DVD's because our hard drive has crashed before and we lost the first couple weeks of pictures after Andrew was born, including most of the hospital pics. sad.gif We still have them on our hard drive though.

I think I'd like to have them all uploaded somewhere too - we've been trying to get caught up on printing. We've been uploading them onto walmart.com and printing them a little at a time - maybe I should just upload all of them now and keep printing them little by little. It would take forever but it might be worth it. smile.gif

MommyToAshley replied: I don't understand the reasoning behind uploading them to snapfish or photobucket for safe keeping. You are just uploading them to another harddrive offsite. You could get your own external harddrive and keep it off site or in a fireproof safe and not have to worry about if the company decides to shut down the website and you lose access to the photos along with it. Sure those companies are stable now, but who knows if they will be around when our kids are grown.

Cece00 replied: I print them, and put them into albums & storage (baby books, etc) and then I also burn them onto 2 CD's- one for home & one that goes in a fireproof safe.
