Poll: What do you do for living - or if you are a SAHM (a full time job)
MommyToAshley wrote: I am a WAHM...DH and I run our own business. We do web design, database development, and any kind of programming. But, taking care of DD is much harder job than the other business -- and more rewarding!
kit_kats_mom replied: I stay at home with my 8 mo DD who is getting busier and busier every day! I have a WAH job that is pretty flexible too and I generally try to work about 20 hours a week just to get extra spending $ and to save for a bigger house. Some weeks I work more, some less. I have a nanny who comes 10 hours a week and my DH watches her for a few hours every weekend and about 2 hours every night so I can get my work completed. I work for a consulting firm that helps school districts deal with all of the paperwork needed for governmental funding. What I do is process student data from all of the MO school districts and find out which students are eligible for Medicaid funding. I then communicate with the Special Ed Coordinators or Superintendents and let them know what their eligibility percentage is for funding and how much they can expect from the state each quarter. It's mostly database work so it can get tedious and rather boring but it is WAY better than what I was doing...collections for a credit union. I'm very happy!

supermom replied: I'm a WOHM - we own our own business, we are an Internet Service Provider, we offer dial-up and also high-speed wireless internet. We also do web design, and computer sales and service. I do some of the web design, and all of the accounting (I've got an MBA) while my DH does all of the computer and network stuff. He also is into programming, him and a friend developed a game "helper" to play an (oldie) online game called Trade Wars.
Since we own our own store, our 3 YO has come to work with us since he was 3 days old...in fact, we didn't go home from the hospital first, we went to the store to meet all of the customers who were waiting to meet the new little guy. He got pretty "passed around" the first week or so...... and he seems to just thrive on meeting new customers and playing with the old ones. We have a few that make it a point to come in and pay their bill just so they can visit him. - hehehehehe - and they are anxiously awaiting the arrival of the new one in August. I'm sure we'll go to the store before we go home with this one too.
MomToMany replied: I'm a SAHM, trying my best to raise America's future. It gets to be stressful at times, I don't get out much by myself ! It's an hour's drive to civilization, and I hate doing that all the time. It's 2 hours of driving there & back, plus the running around when you get there. The kids get SO crabby riding in the van that long and just makes things worse. I'd just rather stay home; the computer is my entertainment!
jdkjd replied: I'm an attorney/public relations person for The Florida Bar. I do press releases, speeches for our leadership and track legislation that effects the legal system. I also help track news stories about judges and lawyers and do a lot of research.
My husband is a criminal defense attorney but he also does family law and landlord/tenant.
My job is a desk job that can be pretty boring. Ryan gets to do the exciting court stuff.
ashade75 replied: I am a boring Financial Analyst for the county I live in. Counting $$ and saving money pretty boring when it's not your own!!
momofajcl replied: I'm a SAHM...before I got pregnant with Nicholas I sold candles for PartyLite which was awesome and I will probably pick that up again at some point in time. I just do it to be able to buy my own candles at 1/2 price!!! LOL!
MommyToAshley replied: From the pictures I've seen, he just looks like a ham! hehe. He looks like he loves all the attention!! He is such a cutie!
5littleladies replied: I'm a SAHM and have been since I got pregnant with my 1st dd. Before that I worked at a day care center. I love being home with my kids but am usually pretty desperate for adult conversation when DH gets home in the afternoon!!! lol
dhoppygirl replied: I am a WOHM. I work in the internal audit department of Boise Cascade Corp. I have a degree in accounting and information systems, so most of my projects I work on are systems related or application related. The job is pretty interesting...I never work on the same thing twice! But, the downside is the travel; before I got pregnant I was traveling about 35% of the time. Luckily because of the economy and some legislation acts, I haven't had to travel at all in the last year. I also get to go home for lunch everyday, so I get to spend time with Peyton. Oh, my dh is a SAHD.
MomToMany replied: That's really cool! My DH could never handle it here all by himself with the kids !
ediep replied: I am a teacher. I teach middle school science, this year and next year I am on infant care leave from school. I plan to go back in September 2004
maliksmommy replied: I am a processor for a mortgage company. I make sure the files are put together and all the documentation is there to close the loans. I sit at a desk all day, but it's not that boring. Something different every day:)
OklahomaSooners replied: I work in the family business. We sell oilfield supplies and equipment in Choctaw, Oklahoma. My dad inherited the business from my grampy, and my dad passed away from Cancer in Easter of '02. My mother and I run the company now, and my brother works here also.. I'm married to a fiber optics specialist that LOVES LOVES LOVES to hunt and we are expecting our first baby Oct. 2nd!!
Please pray with me that this poor child gets to wear something else other than camoflauge outfits and overalls... Our father.. who art in heaven...
MomToMany replied: I'm right there with you! My DH is a big hunter/fisherman, too. We live in northern Minnesota, and it seems like it's always open season on something!
Praying along with you ...hallowed (sp?) be thy name...thy Kingdom come...thy will be done..
OklahomaSooners replied: oh I feel your pain.. if it isn't Bow season it's black powder season if it isn't black powder season it's rifle season if it isn't any of those it's turkey season.. the list goes on and on.. he got an opportunity to go to Canada the last week in August.. first week in September to go bear hunting. I'll be 8 months pregnant. I told him he better drive himself.. because if baby is ready to come out early I AM NOT WAITING FOR HIM TO GET HOME!!!
dhoppygirl replied:
Well, we only have one baby for now...in a couple of years when we have the four kids we've decided on, it will be a different story!!!
razz05 replied: I work at a nearby hospital in the ICU/CCU. I'm a Unit Coordinator (kinda like a secretary... but I have more of a broad range of work to do). It pays decent money and I work evenings (3-11:30) 3 days a week. Not TOO bad considering we don't have to pay for a babysitter. My fiancee goes in 1/2 hr early and gets out of work at 2:30 on the days I have to work so I can be on time
MomToMany replied: I wouldn't wait for him either! What is it with men...having a baby should be on the top of their lists! The bad (or good??) thing, now the boys are getting involved in it, but I will teach them to control themselves better !
supermom replied: Four in a couple of years - you'd better get busy! J/K
Schnoogly replied: I am a graduate student getting a PhD in European religious history and I teach same subject when I get a chance. I also work as the asst. director of my school's writing center where we help students with writing & teach workshops. I am part time right now (2 days/week) but will be working more in the fall. I should be working on my dissertation but Iain is taking all my time!! And DH wants to be a SAHD if I can land an academic job when I'm done. Now he's a computer systems admin for a GIS software company.

Hillbilly Housewife replied: Well...
I work for the gov't full-time, as an administrative assistant. I make over 42K a year, which is more than enough to support myself and DH and Zach. DH was in school full-time until April, working part-time at Harvey's on the weekends. Now that he's done school, he's announced that he failed one course, meaning he will NOT be getting his diploma in Computer Engineering, and that he has to take another course. Soooooo..... he's still working at Harvey's, making 8$ an hour, flipping burgers. Pathetic? Um..slightly. But he is working his way to working full-time (10-4 on weekdays, and one weekend day from 10 - 6). I'm thinking that with his salary...600$ every 2 weeks.... it may be worth him only continuing to work part-time, and to stay home with Zach during the day, rather than me paying almost 700$ a month to have him in daycare. Decisions, decisions.
Plus, on top of my regular day job, I work for Mary Kay Cosmetics, owning my own business, and making about 81$ an hour. It's fun... I get to go out and meet women, and help them learn about skin care and makeup....all the while getting out of my house for some fresh...air? faces? new people?
So all in all, I myself have a combined income for my 2 jobs of about $68,000 a year...and he makes his little $15,600 a year.
Ugh. I hate working...and if all goes well, my position within the gov't will be permanent soon (if they can get their butts in gear....), and I will be able to take the full year of maternity leave that I am entiteld to, with no worries. Then, we'll see about DH being a SAHD....although he's going to have to get over the fact that yes, diapers DO stink.
mommytohaley replied: I'm a Project Manager for a software consulting company in Minneapolis. As a consultant I get placed at a client site for a period of time to manage a project that they are currently working on. Right now I'm at an online brokerage house and we're implementing a customer relationship system. I don't do any software development myself, but I do all the planning as to who does what when and for what cost. I also get to be the one who gets blamed when things go wrong. It's a lot of hard work and can be quite stressful at times, but I love what I do. I do wish I could stay home with Haley, but we just can't afford to give up my income right now.
My degree is actually in Early Childhood Education. I was a preschool teacher and a day care center assistant director for a while after college. I truly loved that career, but just couldn't afford to live on the meager salary. My DH and I hope to build a house within the next year and I'm considering quitting my job and starting an in-home daycare. That way I can stay home with Haley (and the two more children we hope to have) but still make a decent income (plus do a job that I love).
MommyToAshley replied: I just don't understand why we don't pay teachers a higher income! These are the people that we trust to help shape our children's future and 1/2 our child's day is spent at school! I, for one, would be willing to pay a little more to know my child is in the most capable hands!
mommytohaley replied: I'm hoping there are a lot of parents who feel that same way!
MomofTay&Sam replied: I am a SAHM kinda. I am employed and worked until the bitter end. I work for the NY public schools in the special ed department. I requested from Nov to Sept 2004 off and they granted it! No pay ofcourse. Hubby is hopefully getting into a awesome local union within the next few weeks and if he does then I won't be going back! I would miss my job terribly and the children, but I will be heartbroken to leave my little Sam even with relatives, he won't even be a year old when I am suppose to go back.
Instead of hunting, my hubby went shark fishing when I was 8 months! Oh and a Rush concert too! LOL He called a million times. (maybe I made him feel guilty?) lol
maestra replied: I am a second grade dual language teacher, but will teach kindergarten this fall. Dh is a file clerk in the xray dept of the hospital where Jaci was born. He works evenings and takes care of her during the day.
