Okay, you crafty people..

Anyway, I have this mirror, it is goldish and fancy. I don't decorate in the gold, fancy way. My fixtures are all black iron --I want to paint it, or finish it somehow to make it work. Can it be done? Any and all suggestions would be great. I can post a picture of the room if needed. I have a big empty wall and would hate for this mirror to go to waste if it can be used.
Jamison'smama replied: full mirror

coasterqueen replied: Oh darn I saw an episode on HGTV about a month ago where they did something to a mirror like that and I can't for the life of me remember what they did. ARRGHHHH!
I say, yes it can be done, though! How I'm not sure.
booey2 replied: I am not that crafy (well I don't think I am) but you could try getting some dark stain and maybe going over the whole frame to give it the black/gold look. It is kinda hard for me to describe what I am saying, but you wouldn't leave that much stain on it but enough to hide the gold. I think that is what I would do with it. I am no into the gold scene either.

kit_kats_mom replied: Is it made of wood? If so, this is a cheap, easy way to at least see if you'd like it a darker color. Shoe polish. I had a large frame and it was supposed to look beachy, like driftwood. However, the darker spots were way darker. I took some white shoe polish to it to tone down the darker spots and it looks great.
luvmykids replied: I can't tell, is your bathroom fixture a solid flat black? Or is it aged and worn looking in some spots? If it's the solid flat black and you want that on the mirror you could use spray paint ....if you want it to be aged looking the shoe polish idea works awesome
mom2my2cuties replied: I am not at all crafty but that magnet paint I asked someone about the other day reminds me of that kind of finish -
Jamison'smama replied: It is a flat iron black. In the dining room, the table has a slate inlay and we have a very antique kitchen cupboard thing (gosh, I don't know what they're called) it has a slide out white enamel bread making board. So, it is more of a rustic dining room--not formal and not fancy like the mirror.
luvmykids replied: Maybe you could sand over the gold, paint it a base color you like (if you like having color) and then go over it with the shoe polish or black paint and wipe as you go so the black stays in the crevices?
Jamison'smama replied: Hmmm, that's an intersting idea. THe dining room could use a bit of color.
PrairieMom replied: do you need to use the frame? maybe you can just hang the mirror its self?
CantWait replied: I know they have special paints that when applied take on the pewter, or wrought iron look.....
Jamison'smama replied: That would be good. I thought maybe I woiuld just paint it a cream--kind of blending in with the wall then using the shoe polish or stain to antique it. I don't know though.
mom21kid2dogs replied: If you are looking to kill the fillagree look, use a flat finish rather than a pearl or gloss. They'll reflect in the crevices and highlight the decorative features rather than camoflauge them.
I was also going to suggest a faux finish. Hobby Lobby, Michael's, Lowes & Home Depot have a ton of options in spray on finishes~you could make it look like anything from leather, to pewter to stone. I've used the stone ones for frames and scrapbooking~they are easy to use and look great.
mckayleesmom replied: My MIL uses some of that on some chairs and it turned out awesome.
