More decorating advice needed....please

coasterqueen wrote: I swear I should just take DH's advice and hire a decorator. rolleyes.gif I just know once I have one come in and they tell us the price he'll say "no way" so I am not even thinking about it.

I'll try to explain my issue the best I can and hopefully someone can steer me in the right direction.

Our living room is in a light taupe wall color. Lots of earth tones in that room. We just finished the guest/girls bathroom in the same light taupe wall color and then I did my finishing touches in chocolate brown and ivory.

We are now working on our bedroom as a few of you saw from some of my posts on bedroom furniture. I really wanted that black poster bed but it was too huge for the room and I wanted the "wow" factor, not "oh wow, this bed is too big for this room". happy.gif I really do like the furniture I have in there now. I just didn't like the way I dressed up the room. SO, we are sticking with our furniture and going with an extended-queen sleep number mattress. It should be here in a few weeks. I did decide to add a few black pieces of furniture to the room as well.

Last night DH painted one of the walls in the bedroom a medium/dark taupe color. Which I really like. I actually wish I would have went with it in the living room. blush.gif Anyways, I like the color. But my worry is isn't that too much taupe wall color in the house?

My next problem is I was thinking of going with ivory (cream) curtains so then I thought maybe I should follow that through and get ivory bedding with taupe accents on the bed. I would then throw in some burgundy or some other dark accent color. My wall art is going to be in black frames to tie into the black pieces of furniture I'm going to get for the room. The art I hope to find is soft scenes in black and white or sepia color.

The master bathroom will stay the off white wall color with the dark taupe and burgundy (or other dark color) as the accents in the room.

Ok - with the bedding I can't find any ivory (cream) duvet covers that I like. I found a white/taupe duvet cover I like, but not ivory unless I go with plain ivory. I really liked the white/taupe duvet cover I found - but then what curtain color would you go with? White?

help.gif I have to do this room right the first time or I'm going to drive my husband bonkers. He hates how I am so indecisive and always changing things so I want to do this room right the first time. blush.gif

Our Lil' Family replied: I'm having a hard time picturing what you are explaining but let me look at some bedding and I'll post the pics and you can tell me how close the colors are to the walls.

luvmykids replied: I don't think it's too much taupe, I've heard that you should only slightly vary the shades in different rooms so they "flow". But what do I know laugh.gif

For the bedding, I don't know about white, it seems a little stark for a bedroom to me but that's JMHO. Are you wanted something tailored, meaning like plain ivory with taupe trim or something? No pattern? There is a site called hotel bedding or something like that, they have really nice clean lined linens. I'll try to find the right name.

eta: Macy's also has a lot of what I picture from what you described
Macy's

coasterqueen replied: The taupe in this is what color I have on the wall. I am looking for the more tailored look. I like this bedding but I think that's too much taupe overall, kwim? Between the bedding and the wall. I'll post a pic of another bedding ensemble I liked.

luvmykids replied: Are you open to a darker brown? I think that would be very classy and cozy looking.

coasterqueen replied: Darn, I thought I saved the link of the one I wanted, but I didn't and now I can't find it. It's more like the one above but a LOT more white, with the taupe trim around it. So swap the two colors and that's basically what it is.

coasterqueen replied:
Hmm, it would depend. Got any ideas? I haven't even looked at that color. I was steering away from it just because the color in my guest bathroom is taupe and dark brown.

Our Lil' Family replied: That is gorgeous Karen! I don't think it's too much...it won't be up against the wall so it should blend. Maybe get one or two throw pillows that are a more bold color and get the curtains to match those pillows.

Our Lil' Family replied: Chocolate was what I was thinking too Monica! wink.gif

luvmykids replied:
I didn't have any in mind, I just love the thought of different shades of brown, and a dark color on the bed just seems cozier and more inviting. I'll try to find a pic of what I'm imagining.

eta: This is just the color I have in mind...I think in a textured fabric like velour or velvet it would be gorgeous
Choc Brown

I like the texture of this one choc brown 2

They also have a microsuede one in the same color that looks soft and cozy too.

You could easily break it up by having some taupe, ivory and burgandy in your bedding/pillows....I think that color would be gorgeous with ivory sheets and a mix of pillows in ivory and burgandy. I love the look of varying shades of a color but not all the same exact shade, kwim?

Maddie&EthansMom replied: We have a chocolate brown on our walls and I was going to do white curtains, white duvet and accent w/a gold coverlet and black cashmere throw (I had a lot of different textures going on). BUT, I changed my mind and decided to do aqua curtains and an aqua comforter set or something. I haven't really found what I want as far as the curtains and bedding go, I may end up making it.

To answer your question, I like the white and not the ivory and I don't think I would put a color like burgundy in there. I would keep it all pretty neutral. The white curtains would be very pretty. Actually, for the curtains, you could pretty much do any soft color. wink.gif

This is similar to what I'm wanting to do. (unless I change my mind again) tongue.gif But, I believe my walls are much darker than yours. I'm like you, I'm really not happy with the wall color, but I'm leaving it and I'll just work with it. I figure I will never be happy no matter what color I choose b/c I'm just indecisive. happy.gif

coasterqueen replied: Very pretty Aimee. thumb.gif

Dh would never go for aqua. I actually wanted yellow in our bedroom, but it was a no go. I got him to agree on the taupe color. Also I promised a long time ago I wouldn't go too feminine - flowers and such so unfortunately I'm stuck with plain.

If I went with the white curtains I could do the more linen bedding with the white in it.

coasterqueen replied: Monica,

I like those duvet covers, too. For some reason my mind is having a hang-up with plain look bedding. I don't know why. I keep feeling like I have to have some kind of pattern to it. Now if I went with the dark chocolate how will that blend with throwing in the black pieces of furniture and black picture frames? I assume it would look ok? Sorry, I'm terrible at this. What I'll probably do is buy 1/2 a dozen covers and decide which one looks best. I'm so indecisive. rolleyes.gif tongue.gif

Maddie&EthansMom replied: Check out smartbargains.com. They have a pretty wide selection of white duvet colors w/all colors of lines in them. They also have nice, inexpensive sheets w/a high thread count.

Example:

White Duvet

White w/stripes

I love this!

Maddie&EthansMom replied:
Oh my gosh, Karen. The black will look GORGEOUS w/plain. Ethan's room has black furniture, taupe walls. wink.gif I love black! It's so sleek looking!

ETA: I wouldn't go with the all brown, though. I would do mostly white with an accent color.

Maddie&EthansMom replied: I'm having too much fun with this thread. laugh.gif I need a life. tongue.gif If only I could get this excited about finishing my own room.

I like this a lot. http://www1.macys.com/catalog/product/inde...ategoryID=15277

I especially love this with black furniture. You could also do all different colors/textures of white. Like pair the ivory w/white and do the ivory curtains (if you are afraid of white curtains.)

coasterqueen replied: Ooh I LOVE the one from smart bargains that you said you loved, Aimee. That is GORGEOUS!!! I also love the one at Macy's too.

Thank you so much for your help.

coasterqueen replied: I like this one too, but i know Dh won't go for stripes. rolleyes.gif

This one

Boys r us replied: I personally LOVE a white or cream colored duvet cover. I think it's clean and crisp and leaves the decorations in the room to do tha talking, especially if you have a really nice bed. I don't know.. I think it just looks great, very classy. I'm not crazy about the taupe set in the first picture. I LOVE the brown/aqua and am wanting to do something like that in either our bedroom or the guest room.

As for your dh..does he REALLY care? I mean all men THINK they have an opinion...but when it comes down to it..as long as there is beer in the fridge and a TV to watch the games on do they REALLY care what colors it's decorated in?
Rick is forever saying, Oh no that would look horrible or whatever..so I just DO THINGS..and 9 times out of 10..he likes them. So he leaves the decorating to me and doesn't really have a lot of input unless it's something important like big furniture purchases such as couches or bedroom suites.

coasterqueen replied: Nichole you are probably right, but a lot of times when I've picked out decorative stuff like the curtains in the living room, etc - 8 years later (like recent) he'll say "I always hated those things every time I stared at them" That drives me batty! So that is why I ask for his opinion.

Funny thing is I sent him to the link of the Linen's and thing one and he said he LOVED that one. He didn't like the other links I sent to him from here. Oh well. So we may go with the last one I posted. (pictured below)

luvmykids replied: I LOVE the last pic you posted! thumb.gif

I'm kind of like you on the "plain" factor, although it's easier for me to digest when there is some texture that makes it stand out. If you were to go the solid darker brown route you could always add some throw pillows with some kind of print, nothing girly but you could even use the aqua that way. I love that combo too.
I really like the last one you posted best though!

Our Lil' Family replied: That last one is awesome Karen! A good mix of not really feminine but not solid and boring!

coasterqueen replied: Thanks ladies smile.gif I am going to go look at it tonight, hopefully. thumb.gif
