Mommy & Me Cuddle & Coo - FISHER PRICE DOLL

Mommy2Isabella wrote: OMGOODNESS!!

Isabella got this doll from my dad for Christmas, we open it up and none of have realized it is the doll that has been ALL OVER THE NEWS. Then it hits us when the doll says "Islam Is The Light". CLEAR AS DAY!!!

We were all SHOCKED. My dad got the doll a while ago and had no clue and we don't follow to closely to the news so we didn't think anything of it until we heard it say that. CLEARLY!!

Does anyone know anything about how Fisher Price is handling this issue I can't seem to find anything on the internet, other than fisher price saying that the dolls can say things that sound similar to "night or light" ... I will have to take a video and show you all because it isn't similar it is saying that!

mckayleesmom replied: blink.gif

lisar replied: weird

~Roo'sMama~ replied: OMG wacko.gif I haven't heard anything about it either... I'd just call fisher price and get them to replace it for you.

Cece00 replied: WHAT??

I would be aggravated about that personally. I dont think that is appropriate unless that is the type of doll you WANTED. But in a regular innocuous doll? No way!

I would def call and get FP to replace for you.

cameragirl21 replied: http://www.metacafe.com/watch/yt-1LQTxRIRX...ht_toy_product/

Nina J replied: Hmm thats a bit unfortunate. Just contact them they will probably give you a new one.

I do not think your daughter will understand what it said. I do not think my children would know of the word light in the context of the doll.

edit: I looked it up on youtube. It does sound like it says it, but I do not know if I would have heard it if I didn't know to expect it. It is not like an actual voice, it sounds warped.

I do not know why it is a big deal, because it mentions Islam? A woman on youtube was getting all riled up. I wonder if it would have the same type of recpetion if the doll said, for example, Jesus is the Light? I do not want to start a debate, I just wonder if anyone has thought the same as I did. Obviously it is not intended to do anything but coo and make baby noises, so any variation from that would be unwanted. But I wonder if people (not here, but on other sites) would react as they did had it said something else.

A&A'smommy replied: OHHH yeah I should have mentioned this fact Alyssa got one for christmas last year rolleyes.gif stupid doll and its STILL on the shelves is what is beyond me!!

jacobsmama replied: my sister told me about it, so we tried one at walmart and it surely says that!!

I couldn't believe it! ohmy.gif

jacobsmama replied:
I wanted to also say that the baby doll is suppose to COO.

You know how it lists on the box what it says the baby says ususally in ""

Well if they weren't trying ot sneak it into the doll then why didn't they put in on the box that it says that ya know?

I think even if you had it say Jesus is the light, it would be a big deal because ppl weren't told about it ahead of time ay know?

Kinda feel ripped off when you buy something and then go home and find out it says something you totally didn't expect for your child to hear..ya know?

cameragirl21 replied: Say what you will about it...that doll would NEVER be allowed in my house. I don't care if it's intentional or not, imo it's not appropriate to use a doll to brainwash a child, intentional or not. A doll is a toy not a tool for conversions and missionary work. dry.gif

A&A'smommy replied:
UGH You have no idea how bad this thing bugs me I have used mine as a tool to show everyone I tried to take the doll away from alyssa but I haven't been able to sneak it away from her yet. The doll has never been turned on in her use because dolls that make noise freak her out anyway emlaugh.gif (she FREAKED out and cried when we tried to turn her baby annabell on) I took the batteries out and put them in when I show someone.. I have yet to show my mother in law

cameragirl21 replied:
well, I suppose if there are no batteries and she doesn't talk then there is no problem but there is no way I'd have that doll saying that to any kid of mine. No way, no how.

Jackie012007 replied: eek! omg I would freak if I turned on a doll and heard that!!!

Cece00 replied:
believe it or not, I agree completely. Unless I am aware that I am buying this type of item for my child, I dont want a company trying to sneak it in under the radar.

Kentuckychick replied: huh.gif I personally don't hear the phrase "Islam is the light" at all. I've watched quite a few of the videos on youtube and all I can here is "mumble mumble" something something that could possibly be the world light or delight.

And frankly, it wouldn't bother me if that's what it is saying because if I can't make it out, then neither can a child and if a child's never heard the phrase "Islam is the light" then I can pretty much guarantee you they won't come up with that phrase. You could probably do a study and let 1,000 kids under the age three (who haven't been influenced by their parents) listen to the phrase and none of them would come up with that one.

Danalana replied: Yikes, how freaky!

CantWait replied:
I agree, unfortunate, but nothing to make a stink about. Not unless your racist that is!!! I can understand it not being what you believe in, but if that is the case, then I would just ask for a return or exchange.

Mommy2Isabella replied: To clear a few things up,

Im not trying to make a big fuss about it.

If you support Islam, this is the doll for you. We don't not to mention, the doll isn't supposed to say ANYTHING. It is a cuddle and 'COO' doll.

I haven't contacted fisher price yet, the doll is sitting on a shelf in the off position and I will contact them on Monday.

I think it is rather disturbing that anyone is trying to hide subliminal messages in a CHILD'S TOY!!

cameragirl21 replied:
Marie, I have a big problem with this doll and I don't think it makes me a racist. People are strapping bombs to themselves all over the world and blowing innocent people against whom they have no realistic offense all in the name of Islam and imo, that makes it the complete opposite of "the light". To me, that is stone age style darkness. I don't have a problem with muslims, per se, but I have studied their religion extensively and I have some problems with it and don't think I should have to bring a doll home that unbeknownst to me is preaching to any child of mine or any child to whom I may give that doll as a gift.
You know, the other day I saw a public bus here that on the entire side of it, preaches about Islam and at the top states, "Islam was the message of Abraham, Moses, Jesus, and Mohammed." huh.gif I can't speak for Jesus and Mohammed but Islam was very definitely NOT the message of Abraham and Moses, not even close.
As a Catholic, I can't imagine that that doesn't offend you at least a little, that someone has the nerve to tell you that YOUR prophet and Messiah had a different message from what you were taught by your own clergy and that is in your own bible. They rewrite our combined bible (the OT and NT) into their own bible and suddenly all this time, we were wrong and they are right? I don't think so. They have no right to tell me what my prophets "really" said or meant and they have no right to tell you what your prophet really said or meant either. And I don't want any doll that even plants ideas of that sort in children's heads.
I can just see it now--I have a daughter that wants to visit Israel because that is what she is learning about in Jewish school. The convo would go something like this:
My kid--Mommy, why can't we visit Israel?
Me--Because people are blowing people up there in the name of Islam and I don't think it will be safe for you.
My kid--but my doll says Islam is the light....
Sorry, not for me, no thanks and I don't think I'm overreacting at all.

CantWait replied:
Jennifer I didn't say that only those that have a problem with the doll itself are racist, but rather the message that it holds. Any religion is entitled to its belief and just because it's not the one that you follow does not make it wrong.

And to clear one thing up, I am not only of catholic decent, but my father was from Lebanon (born), and was muslim.

I do not practice either religion, but I can say that the muslim religion is not what we hear about on the news everyday, and for anyone to sterotype that is unfair.

Boo&BugsMom replied:
I would make a stink about it, and I'm not racist. Race has nothing to do with my religious beliefs. I don't think making the doll is "wrong" (everyone has the right to practice whatever they believe)...however, if they "hid" the message in the doll and didn't tell the consumers about it, then yes I think THAT is wrong! It's called false advertising, and that is ILLEGAL! wink.gif

I would not be allowing any of my children (even if I had a girl) to have this doll, because it would be considered blasphemous against what we teach our children. If they (Fisher Price) want the doll to say this, then they should be telling the consumers ahead of time. No different than when I ran my daycare business... I was listed as a Christian center...families knew ahead of time. The consumer should always know what they are delving into or purchasing, whether it's a purchased good or service (if that service provides religious teaching, etc. like I did).

ETA: from what I remember...Jess is a Christian as well as I am, so I understand why she would make a stink over it. I would too, if I purchased this doll for my child not knowing what it said, then all of a sudden it said what was mentioned above. Eek!!!

cameragirl21 replied: Marie, I'm sorry if I hurt your feelings or appeared to be attacking you. I do understand what you are saying. I also think that it is wrong to put a doll out there that says anything that is not openly told to the general public.
If the doll said, "Judaism is the light" I'd disagree with that also if it was not the intention and was a hidden message of sorts.
Idk, I had a really close friend in junior high who was a Pakistani Muslim and I am aware that Islam is not all bad but when I see billboards on the sides of buses (and btw, my good friend in Chicago said she saw the same billboard on a bus in Chitown so it's not just here in Miami) and then dolls conveying Islamic messages then yes, I do get upset. And tbh, I think *some* muslims did this to themselves by constantly talking about the jihad coming to America, even mainstream organizations like CAIR (council of American Islamic Relations) stating that "Islam is not in America to be equal to America, Islam is in America to take over." Don't believe me, check out their website or google that quote and the word CAIR.
Sorry, but they bring this sh*t upon themselves. As long as you don't harm people or animals, I really don't care what religion anyone practices, they can sit in their basement and worship satan all they want for all I care, as long as no one is harmed by it. But when you openly threaten my way of life and make it known and public then yes I take issue with that and just for the record, if a group of deranged Orthodox Jews decided they want to use violence, subliminal messags or whatever else to convert the US to an Orthodox Jewish nation I'd take major issue with that too.
The difference is that Jews and Christans have gotten past the dark ages and at least are trying to live and let live.

Cece00 replied:
Islam is a race not a religion. You can not be racist against a religion.

Cece00 replied:
It is disturbing for that to happen, its not just you.

What if it says "Kill all the blacks" or "God isnt real"? People would have problems with that.

Companies should not pander religion to children through dolls that are not marketed for that specific reason.

CantWait replied:
Thank you for correcting me, I didn't realize we were SO technical here blink.gif rolleyes.gif

Maybe I should check for spelling errors as well.

CantWait replied: Does everyone think that FB actually did this on purpose though? This is what I'm reading from a lot of the posts.

I could understand if FB put this in their doll and purposely advertised it as something else, but I really don't think this is the case, especially if they are willing to accept exchanges on the item.

mckayleesmom replied: I don't think they did it on purpose...I think its either something that is making it sound like its saying that..a malfunction or a disgruntled employee trying a little sabbotoge (sp?)

Remember all the disney movies that got tainted with nasty things..it was a ticked off employee.

The cover of the little mermaid had a penis drawn in.

When Alladin falls backwards off the balcony you hear the bee say TAKE OFF YOUR CLOTHES.

SEX written in the clouds on The Lion King

Seeing The beasts Tally wacker when he gets out of the bath...

It all turned out to be a bad employee. I don't think FP would do this on purpose because chances are...not all FB members believe in Islam and took a vote to include that.

mckayleesmom replied: Personally I would just remove the voice thing ...most toys you can just remove them. Then call the company for a replacement...

Cece00 replied:
I was pointing out that you arent racist bc you dont want your child to have a doll that has hidden religious messages in them.

cameragirl21 replied:
I don't think the doll can easily be replaced by Fisher Price because it seems like all the dolls say that. FP should just have a recall and remake them.
And no, I don't think this was done on purpose by FP but in all fairness, they ARE selling something that caters to children and for this reason, they have a duty to check and double check products before they hit store shelves. Not just to make sure they don't make offensive statements but also for safety, etc.
FP has a responsibility to the public at large.

Kentuckychick replied: Lol... I'm still waiting for the company who makes the Bratz dolls to recall all of those... because now THOSE things are offensive wink.gif

mckayleesmom replied:
LOL...I sooooo agree on that one.

cameragirl21 replied: If the Bratz dolls offend you then you have the right not to buy them, there is no deception as to what they are or what they do. The issue with these dolls is that they say something that they are not intended to say and it tricks the consumer.
That is where my issue with them lies.

Cece00 replied:
Actually I heard they wont be making them after Christmas, they lost some lawsuit.

Boo&BugsMom replied:
What happened with the Bratz dolls? I missed something. huh.gif

My2Beauties replied:
Mattel (the makers of Barbies) sued them because I guess they are so similar to Barbies and something about an employee who worked for Mattel gave the Bartz makers some secret confidential thing or something....I don't know. I'm gonna Google it now. LOL! I'll post a link.

skinkybaby replied: The guy who developed Bratz was still under contract with Mattel when he started production

My2Beauties replied: OK this was written way before they won, but this explains the lawsuit

http://toys.about.com/b/2005/04/14/mga-ent...inst-mattel.htm

This talks about how Mattel wins (it's a religious site that is obviously compeltely against Bratz dolls but it's the newest piece of info I could find right now)

http://stlouiscatholic.blogspot.com/2008/1...-makers-of.html

Boo&BugsMom replied: Ok, maybe I'm a bit naive...but I would have never thought Bratz looked anything like Barbie or even thought to compare them. huh.gif

I suppose if something illegal happened then that is understandable, but I think the whole lawsuit is hookey. Sounds like Mattel just isn't pleased that their Barbie sales are down. rolleyes.gif I can't stand Bratz, but I couldn't care less if they are being sold.

Mommy2Isabella replied: We don't do bratz or barbies~ they leave off their clothing!! Im not ok with that! By leave off their clothing I mean they don't have nearly enough on. My children don't see me dressed like that.

I don't know we are Christians and we don't shelter our kids but I surely don't let them watch MTV or for that matter anothing Nickelodeon < owned by the same parent company.

We watch the Disney Channel only. And not everything on their is age approriate.

Back to the doll, she is still sitting on my shelf, unplayed with. I haven't called FP yet, haven't had time. Bella has other dolls she doesn't miss it. I will get around to calling them but there is no replacement. From what I gather, ALL of the dolls say it, and FP is claiming that the doll can mimick sounds that are smiliar to night or light.

NOT TRUE!! It clearly says it!

Not sure what we are going to do as of yet, hence why it is still on the shelf.

** Side note, I am not racist, nor do I dislike people solely because of their religon, I do not SUPPORT Islam, wether it is a people or a religon. My issue is SOLELY that is not what we teach our children. I don't let them watch MTV because that is not a good way to teach them to behave. We don't use profanity for the same reasons, so why would I allow her to play with a doll that is "teaching" her that Islam is the light? It makes NO SENSE! Reguardless if I am blue, white, black, or purple and regaurdless of wheter we practice, christianity or any other religon. **

I didn't mean for this to start any debate of any kind, just was looking for information.

julesmom replied: You could always sell it on ebay! I saw one on there today.

jcc64 replied: This reminds me of when I was a teenagers in the 80s. There were rumors that if played backwards, Led Zeppelin albums contained satanic messages. My bff, whose family was hard core born again, broke all of her albums. I found the whole thing ridiculous, even as a kid, but apparently, these sorts of hoaxes and controversies still have the potential to gain a lot of traction.
I'm confident that Fisher Price, which was originally a German company, is not trying to subliminally convert a generation of Western children to Islam via a baby doll. Whatever sound the doll is making is undoubtedly coincidental.
Regarding the discussion about Islam in general, I find some of the comments or implications a little offensive, tbh.
The difference is that Jews and Christians have gotten past the dark ages and at least are trying to live and let live
I think there are lots of people in other parts of the world who would take issue with this statement, Jen, and I think there are plenty of Muslims who've been able to "get past the dark ages and are trying to live righteous, peaceful lives.
When people of any background claim the moral high road while simultaneously condeming an entire religion based on the behavior of a small radical minority is when the trouble starts, and I'm appalled that it's still socially acceptable to say racist things about Muslims. Reducing people to cultural stereotypes is the type of mindset that sets the stage for war, terrorism, genocide, etc. I know you're a Zionist, Jen, and you have very strong feelings about your religion, but if someone made a blanket comment like that about your religion, I think you'd be pretty offended, too.

cameragirl21 replied:
Jeanne, I get what you're saying but I will say this--if people of my religion strapped bombs onto themselves and started killing innocent people in the streets of Berlin to avenge the Holocaust, or in Vatican City to avenge the Roman Empire's destruction of Jerusalem and renaming of Israel to Palestine (which btw was how this whole ME mess got started in terms of which came first, Israel or Palestine) or cities in Alabama to avenge white supremacist groups then I'd not be surprised if I were racially profiled or if there was suspicion about me as a result.
And if Israelis had hijacked 4 commercial US airliners and taken out buildings in NYC on 9/11/01 I'd stop being a Zionist on that day.
I am a firm believer that a few bad apples spoil the bunch. I have no doubt that in light of the Madoff scandal there will be Jew haters who say that all Jews are money grubbers, etc and tbh, I'm upset with Madoff for putting all of us in that position, not the people who are subsequently suspicious of Jews and money as a result of Madoff's stupidity and being a total a-hole.
This is not about being a Zionist...Muslims have openly stated their goal is to take over the world, google it, I didn't come up with it. Doesn't mean all Muslims are bad or that we should hate them as a group but I do think it's outrageous that a doll would say that.
And as for the Led Zeppelin thing, Satan is a rather elusive foe in our day to day world because he's not threatening our country or sending suicide bombers all over the western world to teach us a lesson.
I'm a bit appalled that when Lebanese were killing Palestinians in refugee camps by the hundreds there were no protests in the middle east, other than those who once again blamed Israel for it. blink.gif Nearly a million innocent people slaughtered in Darfur by Muslims for no reason whatsoever and again, no protests in the middle east. You should see the insane protests happening now when Israelis respond to fire with fire. I deplore the hypocrisy. It's not just about being a Zionist, it's the blatant, open hypocrisy that I have no tolerance for.
I know you and I rarely disagree, Jeanne, and of course I have a lot of respect for you but I don't think my opinion is wrong and I think as long as the status quo continues and Muslims as a group continue to justify terror instead of speaking out against it in droves, this type of thinking will continue.
I also don't think companies have the right to shove this type of stuff down our throats. If they want to make an Islamic doll, fine, but don't misrepresent your merchandise. And I doubt FP did this intentionally but I don't think all these people who hear "islam is the light" are hearing things or crazy.
And I'd be just as perturbed if it said "Judaism is the light" because that is NOT what the doll was intended for.

jcc64 replied: A few bad apples shouldn't be allowed to spoil the bunch. The reason it seems like all Muslims are fanatics is because that is the only exposure we have to them here in the West via what our media chooses to cover. I don't excuse or condone violence committed in the name of religion, any religion, but we all need to recognize the very human tendency to marginalize "the other" in our efforts to justify our own religious beliefs. Its the single biggest reason I don't proscribe to any organized belief system. EVERY war or large scale atrocity has had at its center religious or racial intolerance. As much as a cliche John Lennon's iconic song "Imagine" has become, he really had it right imo- if there was no religion, there'd be nothing to kill or die for.

~Roo'sMama~ replied:
Wow I can't believe this has turned into a debate. rolleyes.gif Fisher Price should recall all the dolls and make new ones, no questions asked - I don't care what it says.

If they won't replace it for you, can you just take it back to the store? I can't believe they're still on the shelves!
