Mom against Tom - Post-Partum depression

melibean wrote: Hey everyone,
I am trying to start an email campaign boycotting Tom Cruise's new movie War of the Worlds to combat his idiotic media preaching about post partum depression. Please copy this email out of this message and send it to as many moms as you can!
Thanks!
Melissa

I have been really bothered by the recent events in
the media surrounding Tom Cruise, Brooke Shields and
postpartum depression. Tom Cruise has stated several
times to different media outlets that he disapproves
of Brooke Shields use of anti-depressant drugs to
fight her severe postpartum depression. He has stated
that there is "no such thing as a chemical imbalance"
and that postpartum depression can be relieved with
vitamins and exercise. He says that through his
research in Scientology he knows this is fact.

This is very disturbing to me on several levels.
First, postpartum depression is very real and cannot
always be controlled by "lifestyle changes." Second,
many women are ashamed and feel guilt around their
depression because this is supposed to be the happiest
time of their lives. Having a very high profile media
figure say that you should be able to control it with
vitamins and exercise may prevent women who truly need
further assistance from coming forward because they
are already ashamed. Third, Tom Cruise is not a doctor
and doesn't even play one on TV. He should not be
stating these "facts" that could be detrimental to
women's' health.

So out of my irritation, I am a mom against Tom. I am
boycotting his latest release "War of the Worlds" and
encourage you to do the same. While I was fortunate
enough to dodge the "baby blues" with my first baby, I
shudder to think that if (God forbid) I have trouble
after my next one that someone will hand me a B
vitamin and tells me to go for a jog because Tom said
so on TV.

A mom against Tom

amynicole21 replied: I heard something about him having a "beef" with her, but I didn't know why. What an idiot he is. dry.gif

DansMom replied:
I think Tom has a right to express his opinion, just like the rest of us. To me, a boycott should be reserved for situations in which corporations are exploiting and harming people for profit.

jcc64 replied: I have found his grandstanding on this issue baffling, to say the least. What the he#* does Tom Cruise know about PPD? He's never even had a biological child of his own. I hope everyone will take his opinions as the nonsense that they are.

melibean replied: But to use your media presence to spread potentially harmful information is not acceptable. Boycotts are every Americans right, you can choose your right not to participate.
Melissa

melibean replied: I hope so too, but knowing the shame and guilt that sometimes comes with PPD, I worry about the message he is sending to already fragile women.

mckayleesmom replied: Although I don't like Tom Cruise or his big mouth spouting off about something he would never know about PPD...I am going to see the movie...not because Tom is in it,,,but because it looked like a good movie and other people worked hard on that movie...not just Slimeball Cruise.

ammommy replied: Melissa, I admire your passion, but I don't think that this calls for a boycott. I personally can't wait to see the movie. Hopefully they did it justice.

DansMom replied: I do see your point about the potential harm to women who might think he knows what he's talking about.

A&A'smommy replied: That is awful, he is such an idiot!!!

kimberley replied:
i tried but i think you have to be a mod in both forums to merge? huh.gif it kept saying i wasn't allowed to carry out that function dunno.gif

Josie or M2A or TLCDad will have to do it i guess.

Insanemomof3 replied: I agree that Tom cruise has turned into an idiot, but he does have the freedom to voice his opinions just like the rest of us. I guess I am just an idiot, dunno.

I want to see the movie just because my dad had that on records (remember what those are??? lol)

I hate tom cruise. But I do want to see the movie.

luvbug00 replied: I don't know about ppd because I didn't experence it but he is compainig against ALL "pill" methods for ALL kinds of depression. I Agree with him on the one that affects me. They pump children and adults with every antidepressant known to man to "cure" ADD and I refuse to allow my system or Myas should she be dignosed with ritalin and zoloft and all that other crap!! I don't like the movie plot I'd have a panic attack I will not be seeing it either way!! mad.gif

mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: I haven't had a first hand chance to hear or read what Tom has to say...anyone have a link?? Anyways, I've voiced my opinions regarding Tom Cruise before, so I'm not going to go there...Tom shouldn't have gone there either!! Shame on him.

mom21kid2dogs replied:
They replayed some of the interview on the Today Show this AM (Saturday) with a panel of "experts" speaking on the subject. I didn't see the original interview either. Not a big boycotter, but then again I haven't seen an adult movie in almost 5 years anyways rolleyes.gif

What was shocking was how incredibly condescending Tom Cruise was towards Matt Lauer. He acted like he was talking to a dumb 8 year old. Kudos to Matt for not throwing hot coffee on him! thumb.gif I doubt I'd have had that kind of restraint. Must have been that Ohio University education. As for Tom, I like his work as an actor but I'm kinda feeling sorry for Katie Holmes at the moment.

gr33n3y3z replied:
who care what Tom thinks

If you think about it how many stars with in the last 10 years have voiced an OPINION at some point and time and you didnt like it.

Eh? What? What am I meant to be doing?! wacko.gif blush.gif Sorry I haven't been keeping up with this topic . . . blush.gif xx

stanleygirl replied: I don't go to see movies bc of the actors beliefs or opinions, I go to see the movie. If Tom does a good job as an actor than I will be happy. If we sat down and talked to every famous person out there we would realize that a good portion of them are rather looney.
I think we are all responsible for our own education and opinions. Tom was not saying only ppl with ppd shouldn't use meds, but that all pshycaitary (wow bad sp) was bad and all meds are just a cover up. Uh, hello I know that is a load of crap, but I dont care bc I dont look to the *stars* for my opinion either. I think it is great that you want to stand up for this issue, but what would not seeing a great movie accomplish?
Besides give it a year and he'll be on meds of his own, bc he obviously going crazy!

( bawling.gif And I've always loved Tom and can still see that he is a nutjob)

Josie83 replied: Its been merged! Thanks for the reminder Kim wink.gif I surprised myself being able to do it tongue.gif xx

Maddie&EthansMom replied:

I agree, I think that he is speaking out against anti depressants in general. And he has voiced his opinion on the matter. (no fault in that) He should not have targeted "PPD" or "Brooke Shields" in his comments. We all know what happens when famous people voice their opinions. Look at the Dixie Chicks. unsure.gif You never hear from them anymore. That probably won't happen with Tom Cruise. I did see the interview. He wasn't all that rude about it. He was just expressing his religious beliefs.

mckayleesmom replied: The reality of the situation is that there are some people in this world that let movie stars and singers tell them what to think or how to act. I personally could care less what kind of car Tom drives, let alone what is rolling around in his noggin. I like their movies and I like thier singing....thats pretty much all that matters. With all these new MADE UP religions that the stars and singers are flocking to...what does that really say about them?...it says that they are complete DON'T KNOW HOW TO THINK FOR THEMSELVES imo. They just go where the herd goes.

Jamielou replied: I agree I think he is losing it and i used to like him.... But i would still see the movie... I saw the interview and it didnt sound like he was bashing her he just didnt agree with using meds for it and i think it was just his opinion.

Nothing wrong with that tongue.gif
