Local terms?

MyBrownEyedBoy wrote: Mel's post brought this to mind. When we lived in North Carolina (I was in high school) there was a term that I never really understood. When someone got mad at you, the people said, "She showed you her butt." Does anyone know what the heck that is all about? And is it just in the Gastonia, North Carolina area or is it south-wide?
Also, are there any other local/colorful phrases or terms where you live?

Crystalina replied: Well, I say it a bit more colorful then that. "She showed you her @..". happy.gif That would be if someone tried acting more "out there" then usual. Like someone trying to pick a fight or someone drunk and acting out. That kind of thing. It's hard for me to explain it better then that. We use that here in Ohio. There are some here that I don't use because they just don't sound right like:

Be careful or you will upset that drink. unsure.gif

Yuns are going to get in trouble. (Yuns? wth? rolling_smile.gif ) I understand them but I don't use them.

Gosh, there are so many but I can't think of them now. All I have to do is record a conversation that DH's family has and I'll have all sorts of examples. rolling_smile.gif rolling_smile.gif

mom2my2cuties replied: hehehehe - we say it a little different - Usually that they are "Showing thier butt" or something along those lines - but yea same thing and that was in AR and TX and now TN smile.gif

ETA - MY sister in law has this funny saying - when she is in the throws of telling someone off - she will say after her spiel - "If you don't like that then you can just get BENT" I still haven't figured that one out - but I heard it all the time all around Dallas - so I figured it was something local smile.gif

luvmykids replied: When a horse has a bad attitude they turn their butt to you....Sometimes just to try and ignore you, sometimes to get ready to kick the snot out of you.

Is that where the saying comes from? I always assumed that was what it meant.

A&A'smommy replied: yeah I have that one a lot, mostly for kids acting like kids.. showing off, acting out whatever tongue.gif

MyBrownEyedBoy replied: Here's one of my favorites, from my grandmother.
"Oh, for crying in the beer."

luvmykids replied:
I forgot to answer this part....

When people are late they say "Well, you know, it is orange barrel season" because we ALWAYS have construction going on. They give you an alternate route but those are always speckled with orange barrels too. Oh, and instead of "Beer thirty" it's "Siesta thirty". Lots of people have a fiesta instead of a party, a lot of our slang is Spanglish type stuff.

And I don't know why, but my grandma always used to answer the phone with "Kelly's pool hall..." instead of "Hello" rolling_smile.gif And she'd say "I love you a bushel and a peck".

My Italian step mom calls any kind of sauce "gravy", as in "Do you like your spaghetti with a little gravy or a lot?"

I'm sure there are others but since I'm so used to them I probably don't notice.

MommyToAshley replied:
I am in Ohio and I have never heard those. blush.gif But, I didn't grow up around here. My DH grew up here and he says "that smarted" in place of "that hurt" which is funny sounding to me and I don't use it. tongue.gif

mom2my2cuties replied: That Smarts is pretty popular here.

Y'uns is very popular in the mid west. They say that in MO too a lot.

Y'all is native to the south I think.

They say Yous up north.

mckayleesmom replied:
Our grandma always sang us a song with Bushel and a Peck in it...some of the lyrics were

A bushel and a peck and a hug around the neck.

My3LilMonkeys replied:
My MIL often answer the phone with "Looney Bin, would you like to check in?" emlaugh.gif

mom2my2cuties replied:
OMG! That is tooooooo funny!

Hillbilly Housewife replied: "Get Bent" was a popular insult around here... around the same time the Simpsons was "really" popular and "eat my shorts" was a cool thing to say... rolleyes.gif

My grandmother used to tell me "go tell your mom to call for you" when she was annoyed with me, or "go play in the traffic" when she was really angry with me.

My mom says fu**-a-duck when she's ticked off...it's so funny.

mom2my2cuties replied:
I say that a lot too - I think I actually picked that up while I was in Ontario smile.gif

Crystalina replied:
rolling_smile.gif I was ALWAYS told to go play in traffic. You wouldn't dare say that now though. You'd have CPS on your butt. happy.gif

I would call my Oma when she was in Puerto Rico and ask her how the weather was and she would always say, "It's so hot here that the water in my @_ _ is boiling." She still says that when it's hot but she's in Ohio now and our heat is nothing like PR heat.

MyBrownEyedBoy replied: I completely forgot my favorite from Aaron. When he tells someone off he says, "go bite the wall" It makes me laugh every time.

jacobsmama replied: laugh.gif We say alot of those things here too...I'm having trouble thinking of others that we say.. wacko.gif
