Laundry help needed - odors
amynicole21 wrote: DH went fishing last week and came home covered in fish guts He then threw his stinky clothes in the wash with some work shirts and towels and dried the whole load. When I took it out of the dryer I almost puked... it all stunk like fish. Horrible. I washed it again in regular detergent, but it didn't work. I have since soaked it for a full day in Oxi Clean and re-washed in regular detergent, but nothing is working.
Any ideas?
mckayleesmom replied: have you tried baking powder or vinager??
BAC'sMom replied: baking soda or mule team borax...maybe even mix in some liquid fabric softner.
amynicole21 replied: Not yet, but the detergent I used 3x was Arm and Hammer. I'm pretty sure it is baking powder based. How would I use them? Just add them to the water? How much?
Jamison'smama replied: Febreze makes a Laundry Odor Eliminator that you put directly into the washer. It has worked on cat pee for me --although I do it at least twice but it seems to work.
JP&KJMOM replied: I think (not sure but think) Arm and Hammer is pretty mild detergent. I used it when dd and dh had eczema really bad and it never got the smell out of anything. Might try a different detergent.
Cece00 replied: I think I'd use Tide, and then add baking soda or vinegar.
BAC'sMom replied: mix in about 1/2 a cup.... yes, just add to the water.
BAC'sMom replied: I thought of something else. How about a little lemon juice? That always cuts the smell of fish. Not sure what it will do to your clothes though.
Cece00 replied: Oh, or salt! We use salt here when we eat boiled crawfish, to help take the smell off your hands.
holley79 replied: Baking soda maybe? Or the dumpster...
luvmykids replied: Try the vinegar in the rinse cycle or in a downy ball, once the clothes are rinsed there shouldn't be any vinegar odor left. I once read that it's hands down the best odor eliminator for pet accidents so I would think it would work on fish. I use it in the rinse cycle all the time.
