Karla Homolka - in my back yard!!!!

Hillbilly Housewife wrote: Well, maybe 20 feet away from my back yard...... I live in a building which is across the street from the court house in this crap town. Karla Homolka is there this morning in court - to determine what conditions etc will be upon release in a few weeks.

Dudes - this woman is my neighbour.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!

There was a big protest this morning at 7:15 when we dropped off the kids at the sitters - iut was HUGE when we came back at 7:30!!!!!!!!!!!

Newscrews and all.

I hate publicity. dry.gif

amymom replied: Well, I didn't know who she was until I googled her. But Oh My! Why is she being released? I didn't read the whole story and do not know what she was convicted of but it seems that if she helped kill her sister and others she should be in jail FOREVER!

I hope she doesn't move into your neighborhood!!!!

Hillbilly Housewife replied:
?!

Seems like it was only big news where I used to live.... a lot of people around here don't know who she is either! ohmy.gif

She helped Paul Bernardo in the killings of Leslie Mahaffy and Kristen French, as well as Karla's younger sister Tammy. The girls were abducted, sexually molested, abused, tortured, then killed. Apparently it was all caught on video (home videos) in which the killers apparetnly enjoyed immensly what they were doing to those girls. She is just about done her 12 year sentence, which was lowered to 12 years because she was SOOO cooperative in telling the courts what she did.

She will be living in Montreal, which is still only about 30 minutes away.

Hillbilly Housewife replied: Here is a website that is actually pretty graphic about what happened, and why I'm nervous she's around here.....

disclosure - this might be offensive to some. unsure.gif

amymom replied: I am in the US and missed this news. But I think that is the website I went to, I only read the first and third chapters and that was more than enough info for me. I have said a prayer that she lives no where near any of our members.

Josie83 replied: Oh my gosh, I started reading it and had to stop, that is so sad. The lengths that she went to to keep him happy are unbelievable. I'm sorry that you have to deal with this right on your back step, Rocky . . . grouphug.gif sad.gif xx

Hillbilly Housewife replied: Thanks..... it's freaky, you know? Like - you think that i'm not too far off from the ages those kids were..... it could have been me. I didn't live too far from Scarbourough around that time, I was just about the right age....

*shudder*

DansMom replied: I live in the US and remember the name and the case very well! It was horrifying. I wonder if it's both my age (40) and my proximity to Canada and access to Canadian news (I've always lived in Maine or Michigan).

My2Beauties replied: OMG I am still reading the chapters, I think I am on like Chapter 6 or 7, this is sick! mad.gif

Jamielou replied: I had never heard of this before. I couldnt read much of it i couldnt stop thinking of somebody doing something that sick to somebody i love especially my two girls. I am sorry you have to live close to that, I have a sex offender living 2 houses from me and i am constantly on watch... sad.gif

JAYMESMOM replied: I read the story at crime library. And she was very disturbed. I am sorry that is right outside your door.

IMO-she was more than doing that to keep him. She was just as sick as he was.

mckayleesmom replied: I remember the case also...I lived in Illinois at the time..SICK PEOPLE!!...I also saw it on City Confedential or something like that. She might be getting out of prison, but she probably won't live long...someone will probably pick her off. Those were beautiful girls with very hurt and ticked off families... sad.gif

Mommy2BAK replied: OMG! That is sick, I just read that one page, I have never heard of that before.

Hillbilly Housewife replied:
Her official sentnce is over on June 28th, but she might be released on a nother date.....

THere are apparently some websites that have betting pools on the day she will die. Not that I've been to one or anything, I read that on the website I posted a link to.

3'smom replied: She should never get out. She is a danger to society as much as he is.

mom21kid2dogs replied: Geeze Louise! That link made the hair on my arms stand up! These are 2 very sick people. Would this type of sentence be the norm in Canada? She killed her sister and participated in numerous murders and rapes. I doubt, even with cooperation with the authorities to hang him in the US she'd get less than a life sentence. They'd likely just take out the death penalty part as a bargining chip. Sorry she's getting out~sounds like she will always be a menance to society. I may have missed it, but what kind of a sentence did he get?

TeagansMom609 replied: Ive never heard of her before either. Im going to have to do some reading I guess.

Hillbilly Housewife replied:
No, this type of sentence is not the norm in Canada. What HE got (which is 25 years back to back for each murder) is more the norm. She was supposed to get 12 years PER murder - but because she "bargained" to tell everything, she got one sentence suspended.

This is by no means the norm. You have to think that there are hardly any murders here, and that us Canadians are known worldwide to be the "peacekeepers", so the death sentence has not been used in decades. It's not right, but that's a whole other post.

The correctional facilities are somewhat different than those in the States, and a lot of sentences have a lot to do with rehabilitation. As in - if you're still a stone cold killer after 15 yars of jail - you don't necessarily get out just because your sentence is over - you have to show you're no longer a meance to society. Once you get out, you have to have regular check-ins with a parole officer, unti you're deemed to be autonomous.

Afterwards, you're always going to be on file. Your car, your house, everything will be tracked.

Unlike the US, you can't just walk into a bank here, open an account, and walk out with a free gun, so it's not like it's easy for the people to just pull a pistol out of their pocket and shoot the crap out of someone just because they got looked at the wrong way. It takes several weeks to get a gun, and once you have it, it needs to be registered, same with bullets. Everything is tracked.

So to say that her sentence is the norm in Canada - it's not every day you get someone sentenced for multiple murders - it happens (that we hear of in the news anyways) only every 4 or 5 years.......
