PrairieMom wrote: So, we have been battling chronic ear infections in our big dog Lycos since , like forever.
They stink, he scratches, blah blah blah. I have taken him to the vet tons of times, the answer is always wash out his ears with this special gunk.
So, thats what we have been doing, for like 8 years. I was told that basically some dogs just have irritated ears, that is just they way it was going to be.

So, a couple months ago I noticed a tumor in his ear and took him in to have it removed. While they were doing that they noticed that his ear infections were so bad that both his ear drums had burst. sad.gif Poor puppy! I felt SO BAD, but really, from the outside it looked like nothing had changed, he still smelled bad, we were still just doing what we were told to do. sad.gif

So, they cleaned out his ears , and when he came home he was like a completely different dog. He was happy and playing and frisky, all things that had been gone for so long we forgot about them. I just figured he was getting old, when all this time he was sick. mad.gif sad.gif

So, they had us give him 3 weeks of antibiotics for his ears, which we did. The smell came back almost right away. We went back in, 3 more weeks of antibiotics. Things kept getting worse.

So, you know me, Antibiotics aren't working, its actually making things worse... could it be... YEAST?

I had the vet culture his ears this morning, and guess what? I was right!!! so I have been dumping 6 weeks of antibiotics into this pup just to make things worse. We won't even talk about he wasted $ on vet bills. growl.gif WHY didn't the vet think of this before? He wouldn't have even cultured them today had I not asked.

So, now I have poor Lycos on an antifungal. I should have known, knowing my history. rolleyes.gif Almost makes me wonder if we aren't passing it to and from each other? Gross.
I hope he can get rid of his, and it doesn't become a life long deal like I am living with.

It may be time for a new vet. I'm not really pleased with the situation. dry.gif

mom21kid2dogs replied: So glad you got to the bottom of it and your puppy is "back" biggrin.gif

MommyToAshley replied: Poor doggie. hug.gif

~Roo'sMama~ replied: Aww, Poor puppy! sad.gif I hope he gets better now that you've figured out the problem. I'm sorry you had to waste so much money on antibiotics! Maybe now you can just have him line up with the kids to get their daily dose of acidophilus! tongue.gif

PrairieMom replied:
I started him on probiotics last weekend. blush.gif Now we all get 'em.
Sorry to say they don't do a thing for me. dry.gif I hope they help him out tho.

DVFlyer replied: You can also try Apple Cider Vinegar for his ears. Use a cotton ball soaked in half water/ half ACV.

What kind of dog food does he eat?

PrairieMom replied:
He was on plain ol Purina, but monday I switched him to Natural care, with herring meal, rice , and potato.

I don't want to put anything in his ears yet, because we don't know that his ear drums are healed.

kimberley replied: poor puppy. glad u figured it out. definitely time for a new vet.... maybe a new career for you? tongue.gif

luvbug00 replied: poor puppy! how irritating for you. I would swtich and let your current vet know that you are and why. Vets can either be great or money hungry. They know people love their pets like family. it's sad that not all have the animals best interest at hart. sad.gif

PrairieMom replied:
I don't really think this guy is money hungry, I just think he wasn't thinking. I feel like I need to take a lot of the responsibility for being complacent on the whole thing. If a Dr was dealing with my child like that I would never have let it go on this long. I mean, 8 YEARS? I should have taken the initiative to get a second opinion.

my2monkeyboys replied: I'm glad he's getting better now!! Poor baby! sad.gif
Hopefully he won't have a problem with it continuously, either. So glad you got your puppy back!! biggrin.gif

coasterqueen replied:
You make your poor dog eat Purina while your family eats healthy? tongue.gif sad.gif

PrairieMom replied:
My dog eats his on poo an vomit. I thought purina was healthy enough for him. rolling_smile.gif

~Roo'sMama~ replied:
LOL rolling_smile.gif

coasterqueen replied:
Well, that's one way to look at it. tongue.gif Although his poo and vomit is a product of what he eats wink.gif laugh.gif I only said that because those I know IRL including myself, who is so for green, the environment, healthy living, etc, etc also extend that to their animals as well. I took you for the same. So I hope no offense. blush.gif

PrairieMom replied: no worries. lol. Its just a matter of priorities. I can't do EVERYTHING.

DVFlyer replied: Dogs don't eat their poop and vomit because it tastes good.... (well, I guess I don't really know that but it doesn't seem like it'd taste good... blink.gif )

A couple of theories are that it's because their diet is lacking so they go to their vomit and poop for *whatever* that is.

Or they eat it because they are removing evidence of where they've been... kind of like a survival instinct.

coasterqueen replied:
Mine has never done that either, but mine does like cat poop. puke.gif laugh.gif rolleyes.gif

coasterqueen replied:
Completely understand. thumb.gif

PrairieMom replied:
Actually, his vomit is a product of him eating my compost. dry.gif which, he gets for free, and is in reality, probably healthier than purina. rolling_smile.gif

This post took a really disgusting turn. emlaugh.gif

~Roo'sMama~ replied:
LOL

My dog eats his own puke, but I think it is more because he wants to clean it up than anything else. He's never eaten his own poop, but I've caught him eating out of the cat's litter box several times. puke.gif

My2Beauties replied: Eeew huh.gif LMAO at this thread!
