Iron Levels

lisar wrote: Okay Raygen just went for a check-up my Granny took her and they said that her iron level is extremly low. How do I get it back up. She eats lots of green veggies now and lots of fruit. She ate a can of green beans the other night cause thats what she wanted. She eats lots of bannas and apples. She drinks mostly juice during the day. Good juice not the cheap crap. She isnt pale or anything like that. I remember Lexi when her iron was low she would be all pale and wanna sleep all the time, Raygen isnt like that I dont see anything wrong with her. The dr said "You will see a big diffrence in her when you get the iron levels back up" I told Granny I said I dont see anything wrong with her now.

So how can I get them up and quickly. Oh she also takes a multi vitamin once every day.

Kaitlin'smom replied: how did they determine that? what was there suggestion? they did not mix up the files did they?

MyBrownEyedBoy replied: I took this from www.mckinley.uiuc.edu/handouts/dietary_sources_iron.html

sunrosejenn replied: Eliana had low iron back in November. Eliana has been on a multivitamin since she was 12 months old.

But she had pretty much a constant sinus onfection for 1 year straight. Has Raygen been sick within the past few months?

The pedi actually gave us an iron supp. to give Eliana. Gotta LOVE samples. I look at home at lunch time for the name of it.

It comes in liquid and chewable tablet and it's grape flavor and actually tastes pretty good.

The only thing I saw in Eliana was she wasn't eating well and sleep was horrible.

lisar replied:
They poked her finger and took a sample of blood for it.

lisar replied:
Is it prescription? If not I would love the name of it so I can get some for her. I am gona cook LOTS of stuff tonight with High Iron for her. Green beans those are her fav.

Kaitlin'smom replied:
ahhhh

so did they give her any ideas of what to do to help get her levals up?

other wise sounds like Kelli gave some good info

lisar replied:
Thanks I printed this out.

sunrosejenn replied:
The pedi just gave us some samples. Not sure if it's actually a RX or not. Pedi said to keep her on it for 3 months and it's only 1/4 teaspoon daily. I'll be sure to post the name when I get back from lunch.

lisar replied:
Yea they told me more fruit and Veggies. Duu I knew that and she eats that ALL the time. So obviously that dont work. She had 2 eggs and a bannana for breakfast this morning. So it just blows my mind that her levels are low. This child loves to eat.

sunrosejenn replied:
Eliana also eats alot of fruits & veggies but with her being sick alot last year I can see how her lelvels were low.

Has Raygen been sick in the past year?

sunrosejenn replied: ooh shoot I forgot to write down the name and of course as soon as I sat down to post this I forgot the name of it. i'll get it to you tomorrow

inmom2two replied: This may sound like a silly question, but does her vitamin have iron in it? Most children's vitamins don't unless they say "with iron" because it's easy for young children to fatally OD on iron.

sunrosejenn replied: it is called ICAR and most likely is a prescription.

mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: Since she was tested and has low iron levels, I would suggest Polyvisol or Trivisol drops. They are OTC and made by Enfamil. Get them at any drugstore. I can't remember which of the two has iron in it, but just look on the box, it will say on the front and back.

I just posted about iron defficiancy, since Wesley was tested just yesterday and surprisingly is very high. I was giving him the drops because I am BF exclusively, but now I don't need too since he is high. Anyhow, since she is low, you may want to try those, or just find a multi with iron in them. My sister is a dietician and she says to give a multi with iron every other day, since iron can be constipating for children.

Spinach has a ton of iron in it! Wil likes it steamed, but you can also sneak it into pasta sauce if she won't eat it alone. GL!

coasterqueen replied:
This is exactly what my doc told me the other day for Megan. Since she's having weight issues, not eating very much, and not nursing anymore he wants her on a vitamin w/o iron because he said it's very dangerous if kids get too much iron.
