I'm losing my second horse in two weeks

luvmykids wrote: I woke up one day last week to a dead horse...we had kind of figured that horse would be gone sooner rather than later b/c he colicked often and bad. bawling.gif

So, as if that wasn't bad enough, today MY horse was down and looking bad. A few weeks ago I thought she was looking bad so I moved her from the pasture to a pen so I could make sure she was eating ok and she's been acting fine, etc but today she's been down all day and can't/won't get up. I tried getting her up over and over but either she can't or just doesn't want to, so the vet is coming to look her, he said we'll double check to see if he can do something but most likely will have to put her down bawling.gif bawling.gif bawling.gif

This sucks, I'm feeling a little jinxed that they've both died while DH has been gone and I just hate, hate, hate this bawling.gif bawling.gif

gr33n3y3z replied: I'm so sorry hun
You better figure out why this is going on
So sad sad.gif

mckayleesmom replied: hug.gif sorry...I hope there is something they can do.

luvmykids replied:
The first horse colicked, I'm almost positive. My horse, I don't know, maybe the vet can fill me in once he sees her but she's at "that age" where it could be all sorts of things sleep.gif

All I know is I'm really, really hoping it's coincidence bawling.gif

My3LilMonkeys replied: hug.gif hug.gif I hope they can do something for her.

lovemy2 replied: hug.gif Aww Mon - you are having a rough couple of weeks - I sure hope it is just coincedence and not something going on hug.gif

sparkys2boys replied: hug.gif hug.gif Aww Monica I feel so terrible for you right now hug.gif hug.gif

luvmykids replied: Thanks everyone hug.gif We went ahead and put her to sleep bawling.gif Her temp and heart rate were both pretty low and we couldn't get her up, she had dragged herself around her pen with her front legs and the vet felt that even if we could get her up (which we tried but couldn't) we couldn't do anything that would help much sleep.gif

He did say she had a pretty substantial heart murmer, but without knowing her history he couldn't say if that had anything to do with it or not.

I'm very sad, she was the first horse that was MINE and we have some really great memories of her as a family but I'm also relieved that she's not suffering sleep.gif

CantWait replied: sad.gif Sorry Monica. hug.gif hug.gif

BAC'sMom replied: Sorry girl hug.gif I know it is hard but you made the right decision. I'm here for you if you want to call me back.

mckayleesmom replied: Sorry sweetie....Im praying for your family...its hard to lose a pet. How are the kids taking it?

luvmykids replied:
They were more upset about the first one. I try not to let them see too much but Colt saw the first one being taken away and it was pretty rough.

At least a five yo can find some humor, he said "Huh, I wonder why all the horses are dying all the sudden" laugh.gif bawling.gif tongue.gif

It's so hard to lose a pet- you guys are in my thoughts! At least she's not suffering anymore hug.gif

jcc64 replied: How awful, Monica! I can't imagine losing two treasured "family members" (and they ARE, imo) in such a short span of time. I know how hard it is to accept, but it's so much better than letting them suffer. hug.gif

punkeemunkee'smom replied:
You absolutely did NOT sound like anything more than a concerned owner! I know I was there many times when we were trying to get Cookie to recover! hug.gif You know you can call me whenever! wink.gif hug.gif

A&A'smommy replied: I'm so sorry honey!!! hug.gif hug.gif Its so hard to loose a pet, they are VERY much apart of your family!!! hug.gif hug.gif

Crystalina replied: So sorry! sad.gif hug.gif

We lost one to a flipped stomach and that was horrid to watch. We had to put her down also.

How old was your horse? My mare right now is about 17. She's anemic but that's about it and I guess we're lucky. She's a PITA so maybe that has something to do with it.

Have they always been in the field you had them in when they both got sick? Maybe there is a certain weed in there that's doing it. I know they are big animals but (after reading my horse book) they can be taken down by a certain plant or even frost on grass. blink.gif Go figure.

luvmykids replied:
I'm sorry, it sucks to have to see it hug.gif

The first horse was in a pen, and he'd been in it for a year or two....she'd been in the pasture for about that same length of time until I moved her to the same pen the first horse had been in....the vet didn't see anything that could have made both of them sick, and with his colic history and her age (25 or 26), he thought it was just terrible timing sleep.gif

It amazes me, for animals so huge, how sensitive their digestive system is rolleyes.gif laugh.gif sleep.gif

lisar replied: Oh hun I am so sorry. hug.gif hug.gif hug.gif hug.gif

TheOaf66 replied: that sucks, I would hate to lose a horse..hope it gets better for ya

mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: Oh gosh, I'm so very sorry Monica. That must be so hard on you. hug.gif bawling.gif

Calimama replied: You guys were on my mind this morning!! hug.gif hug.gif

luvmykids replied:
Aw, thanks hug.gif It's a bummer to see the empty pen but I don't dare put another one in it since I don't know what happened....nobody thinks there is any relation but if there is by some chance something in that pen that made them both sick I'm not taking any chances sleep.gif
