I'm Home!

Maddie&EthansMom wrote: Thank you all for the love and prayers!

I have complicated migraines. He called them Basilar Type migraines:: http://www.healthcentral.com/migraine/type...es-40278-5.html

In the article they talk more about sight and it seems my speech is worse. Regardless, the treatment is the same.

Essentially there's not enough blood flow getting to my brain b/c the migraine is making my brain swell. The swelling and the lack of blood flow is causing my brain to have these stroke symptoms b/c that is the part of the brain it is effecting.

I'm taking a preventative--which is normally used for seizures, but is now being used for migraines as well. It's kind of scaring me, but I'm going to do it and pray it helps. It's got some crazy side effects, but I take it at night. He also put me on a sleeping pill b/c I'm not getting an adequate amount of sleep. He said broken sleep is not good and that I need to sleep all night. He also said it could be hormones and a number of other things....

I didn't have an MRI. He feels confident that I don't need one right now. He wants to start with this and see how it goes. He asked a ton of questions--asked Scotty questions and did some balance tests.

I feel good about it and like I said, I trust him. I love it that he didn't run blood work and a ton of other tests like they would have down here.

Also, he told me that if I would have taken something like Imitrex or another migraine medication that I would have had a stroke. The treatment has to be a reversal. Weird huh? This brain stuff is confusing! I've had migraine's for years--I'm so glad I didn't have migraine meds I would have taken them I'm sure!!!

coasterqueen replied: Well I'm glad you found an answer, albeit not a great diagnosis, but manageable, right? hug.gif hug.gif So what type of med did he put you on? I've been on so many for migraines, some preventative, and some like Imitrex. Imitrex is EVIL, IMO. At least for me. It has the worst effects on me, I crawled out of my skin literally and couldn't function coherently on it. I remember the 1st time my doc gave it to me and I asked him if I'd be able to go back to work. He said yes, no problem at all. 20 minutes later I almost passed out and had to have Ryan come and get me and I was out the rest of the day and had terrible side effects from it. Every one I took was bad, except the herbal preventative ones I took.

I hope the sleeping pill helps too. There is nothing worse than broken sleep.

bluebear replied: I'm so glad it's not strokes. hug.gif Thought about you all day.

~Roo'sMama~ replied: That doesn't sound good, but I'm glad it's not more serious than that! I can't believe you would have actually had a stroke if you would have taken migraine medication. ohmy.gif Yikes! I hope the new medication works, and the side effects don't bother you too much! I know sometimes the side effects are just as bad as the original problem. hug.gif

Boys r us replied: Wow!! I'm glad you have an answer! I hope that these meds do wonders for you and that you don't have any other episodes!!!

MommyToAshley replied: hug.gif I was hoping to hear from you as I've been thinking of you since you told us about your symptoms. I am glad you were able to get answers. It sounds like it will be manageable, so that must be a relief. I hope the side-effects aren't too bad.

luvbug00 replied: glad u know now..the brain is soo complex. well hopefully this will ease your discomfort.

jcc64 replied: Glad you have some answers and a possible solution. You've been on my mind--kept coming back here to check up--somehow missed this post. Good luck and kup! hug.gif

Maddie&EthansMom replied: Three days post meds, I'm feeling a little better. I expect it to take some time for the meds to kick in. I have to take one pill for one week and then slowly increase it to 3 per night. There are a few headaches here and there--pretty mild. My sleeping doesn't seem to be getting better and that does effect the headaches.

I'm taking it real easy. It stinks not being able to think clearly, but things are improving. I wake up feeling better and I actually want to get out of bed, shower, get dressed and leave the house most days. laugh.gif

It takes me a long time to type and it's hard to communicate. Most of the time I don't make sense and I second guess myself. I reread all of my sentences. I've always been a good speller and now my spelling and grammar are wacky. It's also hard to read--everything is mixed up in my head. You know how when you look at a word for a long time and it doesn't look right? Or when you are tired and a sentence doesn't make sense? It's that way all the time. sad.gif

I keep telling myself it's only been 3 days.

Thank you all for the thoughts and prayers. hug.gif

ZandersMama replied: hug.gif hug.gif hug.gif hug.gif not the best news but could have been so much worse. i hope the meds start working soon.
