If you had a time machine

Nina J wrote: If you had a time machine and could change one thing in history, what would you change?

There would be so many things I would want to change, it would take ages to list them all, so I'll just put two. I would change things and make it so September 11th never happened, so that all the innocent people who lost there lives could still be here. And, I would go back and make it so the Jewish Holocaust never happened, so millions of innocent people could have lived.

C&K*s Mommie replied: Segregation. sleep.gif And the ensuing racism and hatred.

However, while this happened and it is a dark part of American History, so many favorable things came of it. The first black Supremec Court Justice is appointed. The landmark case of Brown v Board of Education. President Eisenhower's decision to allow the "little nine" into a school in Ark. Rosa Parks. Woolworth's sit in. Martin Luther King, and his Dream. Civil and Voting Rights for blacks. Something that was once unconstitutional, that would have not allowed me to be with who I am, is interracial marriages are legalized. Countless numbers of undocumented acts of brave people on behalf of African Americans, all because of segregation, part of me wishes it never had to come to that the other part is grateful in some part that it did- we would not be where we are today without that sad spark.

PrairieMom replied:
I don't know that i would change a thing. There have been countless horrible tragedies that have happened, 911 and the holocaust being a few of them, but as horrible as they are, they have made us who we are today as a people. If we never expereianced the pain we won't fully beable to apprecieate the happiness.
it would be interesting just to go back and see how things would have been different tho. I wonder what would have happened if Gore would have been president when 911 happened, and with Hurricane Katrina. unsure.gif

MoonMama replied: iagree.gif 100% With both of you.

There are thing I would love to change but like was said it has made us what we are and has made us appreciate things I think a lot more then we would have. I honestly don't know what I would change. blush.gif

redchief replied:
Wow, that's a loaded question. The cause and effect may seem minor, but the ripples from tiny changes can be huge. For instance, if the Holocaust hadn't happened there would be no Israel today. Odds are there also would have been no memorable September 11, because the existence of Israel is one of the reasons the Muslim world disdains America.

Nicole has the right idea. Segregation and it's parentage were awful. Segregation would not have occured without it's ancestral parent, slavery. Had there been no slavery there would be few, if any Americans of african descent (or anywhere but Africa for that matter). Keep taking those thoughts further and all of the people that were removed from Africa to become slaves elsewhere stay in their home continent. Famine in Africa is one of the world's great challenges now. How bad would it be if millions more; the ancestors of the people that were never taken as slaves, were still on the continent?

So back to Nina. No Holocaust? No Hitler? No WW2? No United Nations? No global trade? No World Trade Center? Nothing for airplanes to crash into anyway...

Fast forward to today. Muslim fanatics don't hate us yet, but Islam is gaining a great following in the USA. They're busy taking over Europe and we're just watching because we have no reason to be involved. The papacy has been moved to Bolivia, where Christiandom is still dominant. The Muslim populaton in the United States is growing slowly too, and they're becoming a problem at home. There is no space agency and we've never been to the moon. It's been said that the Japanese may have a powerful new weapon. That news came from the Chinese underground movement in both the Phillipeans and Taiwan. Japanese Beijing News said that the whole idea of a super-weapon was ridiculous.

No, I think I'll just leave history alone.

Nina J replied: When you put it that why.....my mind goes into over drive and shuts down blink.gif I answered my question without thinking about the things that would've changed..would I even be here if there was no holocaust?? Because, if there were no Hitler, Poland would never have been invaded when it was, WW2 never would have started, so many things in the lives of family before me would've changed and I may never have been conceived because things would've been different.

Although, there still might've been a WW2, even if Hitler never exsisted. Mussolini still would've lived, and so would have his Facist movement. Back then, Japan was power hungry. They invaded China in the 30's, and started the war in the Pacific.

I think there still would have been a war because there are so many elements that don't just involve Hitler, but, things are the way they are. It's interesting to think about how different things could be.

I'm just rambling..this probably makes no sense blush.gif

edited to add:

Would Africa have such horrible famine and AIDS problems. What if we went back, and left 10 people there. Would one of them have been a fantastic leader, who could've helped to lead the country into prosperity? They could've been one of the leading countrys in the world. Would they be so ravaged with famine and health issues today if that one person who could've made the biggest difference was left there? How do we know Africa wouldn't have landed on the moon first, or been the most powerful country in the world? Would there have been the apartheid in South Africa? The racial segregation began in South Africa 7 years before Rosa Parks refused to give up her bus seat. Yes, people fought to stop the segregation in South Africa, but it didn't stop until 1994. They are behind, but they could've been ahead if just one special person was left there.

But, things are the way they are..

PrairieMom replied: Its like the butterfly effect. You never know how big of a change the slightest little thing can cause.

Nina J replied: The butterfly effect kind of reminds me of the domino theory.

My3LilMonkeys replied:
Not to be picky, but Africa is a continent, not a country.

ITA with most of the others - I wouldn't want to change a thing. I would be too afraid of the consequences.

cameragirl21 replied: I would have stoppped the Romans from conquering ancient Israel.
That would have prevented the holocaust and would have changed the makeup of the middle east as we know it today.
Take care,
Jennifer

CantWait replied: WOW Kudos to PC. Everyone wants to change major world events. Myself on the other hand, I'm a little more selfish and I'm not willing to share what I would change, I can say it has to do with something I've done in the past, and nothing to do with conflict, hungar, or the world as we know it today.

Personally I think that if we changed a lot of these major world events, although saving a lot of sadness, etc....we wouldn't be able to learn from the mistakes of others.
