I need your help!

Danalana wrote: If any of you have experienced this...

On Sunday night, between 9 and 9:30, Kade started throwing up. He ended up throwing up about 5 times, and he didn't throw up at all during the night. He woke up HUNGRY, and I fed him oatmeal. He ate a ton of it and drank water. (so not like a normal stomach virus, because you wouldn't get up wanting to eat) After he atem he threw up some of the oatmeal, but not all of it. The rest of the day, he was really lethargic...just wanting to lie around. He did finally play some, though. I gave him some milk around 1 or 2 and he did fine. Later that night (last night), he was drinking his nighttime bottle of milk and he threw up quite a bit half-way through (didn't give him the rest of it, though he wanted it). He didn't throw up at all overnight. He woke up hungry again and ate a good bit of oatmeal, but I only put water in it this time--no milk. He threw up just a little, and it was really just liquid, so maybe mostly water he had drank with the oatmeal. He hasn't thrown up any after that today, but he is not himself. He hasn't eaten much at all, which I know is normal for a stomach bug. My question is, WHAT THE HECK IS THIS?? Does this sound like a normal stomach bug to any of you? When he had it once before, he threw up a few times during the night and then didn't want anything to eat until late in the evening the next day...he had some toast. When I had it, I threw up for hours on what seemed to be the same food. This just seems odd, and I am already stressed because it looks like Carter has reflux (hopefully starting meds tomorrow). Have any of you experienced this? he took a 2 1/2 hour nap a little while ago and woke up ill...he went BACK to sleep in Richard's lap. I just need to know what might be going on. I know none of you are doctors, but I was hoping somebody might have experienced it. If it continues, I will call his doctor.
Oh, and he hasn't had a fever, that I have noticed.

momofone replied: is it cows milk?
I know mine has been going bad fast with the heat of the summer.
you said he did better with the water maybe its the milk. IDK i hope he feels better
maybe try pediolyte (spelled wrong) to replace fluids. hug.gif

boyohboyohboy replied: I do think it could still just be a stomach virus, and his belly was unsettled after that first night he threw up so much, he could still be hungry but I think it might help his belly settle if he could stay on clear liquids or pedialite for at least 24 hours.
the milk is kinda heavy and hard to digest if he is upset, and same with the oatmeal, when our kids are sick I do the BRAT diet for about 24 hours till they settle down.
If he conts. I think I would take him in to just make sure he isnt getting dehydrated.
Its good he hasnt had a fever, has there been any rash or anything else?

I hope he feels better soon. and the other little brother doesnt catch it

luvmykids replied: I think it could be a bug, I know when I get it I'm hungry but just super cautious about what to eat and stick with toast or crackers. The BRAT (bananas, rice, applesauce, toast) diet is usually what we stick to around here, too. I cook rice in some chicken broth and we do very, very small amounts until the stomach seems to handle it then gradually add a little more at a time.

Kentuckychick replied: I agree with what the others have said... I would stop with the milk and oatmeal. He'll be fine going with out milk for a few days until his tummy is better (if it is a bug). I'd stick with clear liquids (waters and juices or even popsicles) and blander foods that aren't too heavy on the tummy.

It does sound odd to be a stomach bug, but it may be... or he may just not be tolerating milk well right now for some reason. If you stop the milk for now and he's vomitting stops and then it starts up again when you reintroduce it then you'll know that's the problem.

Edited to add; how has the poop been (you know it's a parenting blog when you can openly discuss poop!). Has he had any diarreah or has he been pooping regularly?

I just ask because we actually have a 19 month old in our class who gets constipated frequently and if it gets bad enough he begins acting puny and vomitting. And as I figured out the hard way last week as I was *warning ick* scooping puke out of the playground mulch *unick, he can poop one day and be majorly constipated to the point of barfing the next.

A&A'smommy replied: yeah that sounds like a virus to me too... there are some WIERD virues out there. One time Alyssa was sick for about 6 hours afterwards she was completely fine, ate normal, drank normal, played like her normal self and the 27 hours later she was throwinng up again it was WIERD

mummy2girls replied: Yes it sounds like a stomach virus. Stop any dairy products expecially milk for a while. Do the brat diet as everyone suggested. Also pedialyte as well. Just give him a little at a time so he doesn't ralf the pedialyte. Once he is able to keep the food down then slowly try dairy again.

coasterqueen replied:
We've had this same scenerio happen in our house, too, so I agree it's probably a bug.

Hope he feels better soon. hug.gif hug.gif

boyohboyohboy replied: Dana, how is Kade now?

Danalana replied: The last time he threw up was last night. I knew he was thirsty, so I gave him his sippy cup (I only give water in it), and he drank it too fast. He threw up a couple of times with that. Today, I gave him some toast and some water, but I made sure he only got a little water at a time. He has just been lying in my lap sad.gif he hasn't had a wet diaper since yesterday evening, unless he has one now from the water he had this morning. He is asleep, and I have to get them up to take Carter to the doc about his reflux. Oh, and he drank milk at his grandmother's yesterday and did fine wacko.gif I just don't understand what's going on. This is the weirdest stomach bug I have ever seen!

boyohboyohboy replied: Dana, how is Kade now? He shouldnt go more then 12 hours without a wet diaper. I just learned first hand how fast little ones can dehydrate.
I hope he is ok

moped replied: Dana, any news today?

Danalana replied: He's back to his normal happy self! biggrin.gif

Danalana replied: Here's a couple of pics from yesterday...poor baby sad.gif

redchief replied: I'm glad he's feeling better. I'm wondering too about what he's voiding. You haven't really answered that. Intermittent vomiting can be a sign of an intestinal problem.

Danalana replied: He went to the bathroom fine after that and has been doing fine ever since. I knew the reason he hadn't gone all night that one time was because he threw up the water he drank. He hasn't had any problems since he threw up once on Wednesday night smile.gif To be safe, I did the BRAT diet yesterday, like some of you suggested.

MoonMama replied: OMGOSH Dana how scary!! I'm so glad he's feeling better!! hug.gif hug.gif

redchief replied: Thanks for the update. I'm glad he's better! smile.gif

Danalana replied: Thanks, me too! He had a "normal" stomach virus once, and it was short-lived. I just hate seeing him not wanting to do anything but lie around. I'd much rather be running around after him, pulling him out of things he isn't supposed to be into tongue.gif

MommyToAshley replied: Glad he is feeling better. hug.gif hug.gif

coasterqueen replied: Glad he's feeling better, Dana. hug.gif

Kentuckychick replied:
I think Redchief and I were thinking more along the lines of how is he pooping? I know that's what I was wondering. Not peeing can be a sign of dehydration typical with bugs, but I was wondering if his bowels have/had been normal -- as frequent intermittent vomitting can be a sign of an intestinal problem.

If he's been having normal bowel movements then I wouldn't worry too much. Runny bowel movements would sort of lend hand to a bug, but if he hasn't been having as many or none that could be a serious problem.
