I got a stinky problem
PrairieMom wrote: I recently acquired a quilt from DH's grandma for Ally. It's been sitting up in her attic for years and years, and it stinks like musty old attic. Anyone know how to get the stink out?
cameragirl21 replied: try febreze, it works wonders, maybe wash with febreze in the wash and then spray it after it's dry.
mckayleesmom replied: I don't know......wash it???
Maybe try getting it dry cleaned.
kimberley replied: ya i was gonna suggest febreze also.
PrairieMom replied: some times the answers are so easy!
is febreeze safe for infants? I know its toxic for birds, so I am a little scared of the stuff.
cameragirl21 replied: you'll get it cleaner if you wash it. There's no harm in it, I wash dry clean only items all the time and have never had a problem and some of them were very expensive and I found DC doesn't get them clean enough.
mom2my2cuties replied: With it being an older blanket - it is probably hand stiched - having a grandmother that used to make these for us all the time (hand stiched quilts) - I can honestly tell you DO NOT PUT IT IN THE WASHING MACHINE! it will wear it down and eventually ruin it.
I would send it to the dry cleaners.
PrairieMom replied: I just washed it in the washing machine. Its totally hand stitched. I washed it with dreft and dryed it in the dryer. Its still stinky tho. thats what promted me to post.
Maybe i will have it dry cleaned.
siblingtooolivia replied: Try washing it and hanging it outside to dry - fresh air does wonders....
jcc64 replied: I don't think I would throw something like that in the washing machine. I think this is a question for Martha Stewart.
PrairieMom replied: yeah, i told my mom I washed it and she about had a stroke! then i told her I threw it in the dryer and it seriously about finished her off. I just really wasn't thinking. I'm airing it out outside, and I'm gonna talk to the dry cleaner about it.
mom2my2cuties replied: I would make sure you take it to a very high end dry cleaners. Some of the smaller shops will do no better than tossing it in the washer/dryer (With your mom on the stroke part - I had Memaw take a quilt back because I used it on the carpeted living room floor )
I suggest Bibbentuckers - but I don't know if that is nationwide or not - It might just be local to DFW
PrairieMom replied: never heard of bibbentuckers, but that is a superfun name!
mom2my2cuties replied: yea i only like them for the free lemonade
PrairieMom replied: not fair! no place around here gives out free lemonaid!
mom2my2cuties replied: They also had donuts, cookies, and coffee too. But I prefered thier lemonade because it was the real stuff.
Cece00 replied: Wash it on GENTLE with vinegar & baking soda and let it air dry & then let it air outside every day for a few hrs...see if that does the trick...I've had it work for me.
Hillbilly Housewife replied: Try putting it in a garbage bag, hold it shut, then stick the vaccuum hose in the bag a little bit... suck the air out to vaccuum seal it sorta... it will suck out all the yuck out of it. That's what I do to "freshen" my pillows and duvets that I can't put in the washing machine.
Also Vinegar is GREAT. So is Peroxide.
mom2my2cuties replied: I would try the vaccum thing Rocky suggested - but I would be leary of using vinegar or those kinds of things on it - being that it is a handstiched blanket and likely very old - you don't want to weaken the stitching...So you have to be careful with it.
