How old when you gave them table food?

Kaitlin'smom wrote: Just wondering how old were they when you first gave them cherrios, rice crispys ect.

Kaitlin is eyeing my food and somtimes grabes for it if I am holding her. Is she to young to start something like that?

Oh she is 5 1/2 months old

ediep replied: I waited until Jasons ped recommended starting finger foods, I think he was 6 months. He said to start with rice crispies. It took Jason a few weeks to learn how to pick it up and put it in his mouth by himself.

Mom2_my3boys replied: I started Zachary around 7 1/2 mos. with figer foods Cheerios, Wagon Wheels, Zwieback Toast, Biter Biscuits. The only one we had a problem with is the Biter biscuits. He occasionally would choke on the big pieces that broke off. Everything else we had no troulbe with. HTH biggrin.gif

aspenblue1 replied: I still can't give Isabella cheerios she chokes on them. I started with the wagon wheels at about 5 or 6 months old.

supermom replied: For all three of mine, when they started grabbing like she's doing, I certainly let them try it - and didn't limit to cheerios - we used all kinds of fresh veggies and the like

Kaitlin'smom replied: thats helpful thanks!

so far other than baby food I have only given her some plain mash tatoes (last night she loved them!) and some of my popsicle! She love them!

so I guess as long as its fresh, low salt and stuff its gonna be okay for her to try as long as I comphy with it.

supermom replied:
That pretty much covers it - and fresh or frozen cooked (we also took some no-salt canned stuff to work with us for Anders - it worked too, except it spoiled before he could eat the whole can, but it wasn't expensive - one can of reg veggies cost less than a jar of baby food!) It's SO FUN to watch them progress and feed themselves...guess soon we're going to have to get another puppy for a vaccum cleaner - laugh.gif

we have 3 cats!

MommyToAshley replied: I am sure you already know this, but no honey, peanuts, or egg whites.

I tried cheerios with Ashley when the Ped recommended at 6 months, but she choked on it. So, I waited until she was closer to 7 months and tried again with rice krispies and cheerios cut in 1/4 -- but it wasn't long before she was eating them whole. I was afraid of her biting off a piece of the wagon wheels so at first I pinched it up like cheerio size but she eats them whole now. I also give her zweiback toast and the biter biscuits.

It was funny, the other day she bit off a piece of her zweiback toast and she reach her own hand in her mouth and pulled it out and made a spit sound. LOL -- I guess she knew it was too big for her mouth.

As for table food, she's had mashed potatoes, pasta, cheese, rice, fresh cooked carrots and green beans, scrambled egg yolk (she didn't like it plain, I had to mix it with applesauce), french toast (made with egg yolk).

She also had a tiny taste of Daddy's salsa and made the ugliest face I have ever seen...LOL.

But, I think her favorite thing is still cheerios.

Julie (jem0622) replied: More don'ts:

Carrots
Spinach

The nitrates are too high and their bodies can turn it into something that is poisonous. I have no idea why or what causes it, but it's true. Hold off on those until 6+ mos of age.

You can also get the mesh teether (I know that TRU has it w/ mesh replacements) so that you can put fresh fruits in there and let them knaw on it and pull very small things through.

I am just now offering table food to Gabe and he is almost 9 mos. I am offering him things like very small bites of bread (pizza, etc....the soggy/soft portion under the sauce and cheese), mushed veggies, and overcooked/throughly cut pasta. He loves mac-n-cheese! I made it homemade and he loved it!

Mommieto2Girls replied: We started giving table food after 6 months old. But you know how family members can be, so she probley really started getting table food earlier than that. It all depends on the baby to, some will take to food right away and some won't. Maddie didn't like the texture of solid food right away so it took awhile. Anything that had a chunck or funny texture she would spit it out, but if it was smooth she had no problem with it.

I'm not planning on giving her much right now, I only gave her some pain mashed tatoes cause she was drolling and imatitang me eating so I let her try some, but most things she will have to waite a little longer, I dont want her to grow up to fast!
