How do you Clean..

kimberley wrote: just curious cuz i saw this bottle of stuff at the peds office made just for kids for ear cleaning. it looked like a mousse can. but i didn't see anythind but adult drops at the drug store. i use olive oil now but might try the other stuff if it is easier.

AlexsPajamaMama replied: I just use a wash cloth and clean his ears when I see they are gross when he is in the tub

C&K*s Mommie replied: other than Q-tips I do not clean their ears beyond that. I did not realize you were supposed to. unsure.gif ooopppsss. blush.gif

Chris was raised up on having to lie on a bed on your side, and having alcohol poured through the ear that is up and vice versa.

TheOaf66 replied: i try not to

redchief replied: 43 years of Dial and H2O and I still hear fine and I have no grunge in or around my ears. laugh.gif

For inside I've used Debrox ear drops, but only when there was as bad build-up of wax. My mom always said you don't put anything smaller than your elbow into your ear. I have to admit I've been guilty of cleaning inside my ears with Q-tips, too, but only after a shower and with no additives.

kimberley replied: i thought q-tips were a big no no? unsure.gif

AlexsPajamaMama replied:
I do that to myself!
Every year right around this time of year my right ear gets really stuffy and I cant hear good! My mom told me to tip my head to the left and pour a little rubbing alcohol in my right ear. Works well, but right now it's soo blocked up, I'm thinking about going to the Dr.

Boo&BugsMom replied: I use Q-tips on our son at least a couple times a week. I can NOT stand dirty gross ears. I have one daycare kid that always has a lot of wax in his ears and it makes me sick just looking at it. Other than Q-tips, I don't use anything else and there really isn't a need to unless your child has some really aweful ear wax. I should also add that I do not go up into my son's ear canal. Only on the visable wax on the visable part of the inside of the ear. If Q-tips were that big of a no no, they would not still be on the market and there wouldn't be so many sold each year, in my opinion.

C&K*s Mommie replied: I did not know that. **ding ding ding** something else I learned that was new today. Why are Q-tips not good? unsure.gif

I, like, TannerBugsMom, use it to clean the walls, and just inside the kids ears. Not going into the canal. With very gentle movements when I do that, in case they jerk or move I will not jab in the canal them accidentally.

Kaitlin'smom replied: are we talking inside or out? outside just what ever she washes with in the tub. As for inside if not cleaned by bath Q-tips for kids. For me same except I use the reg q-tips just to get water out. When I did have my first ear infecton almost 2 years ago the Dr told me to use hydrogen peroxide to help clear it out, it was soooo clogged it took 4-5 days for me to hear out of it.

kimberley replied: i was told by the kids' ped not to use them and by my GP not to use them on me other than cleaning the outside of the ears. they said that q-tips just pack wax into your ear further, can damage the drum and create a real problem. i thought this was just a common thing everywhere that people don't use them in the ears. dunno.gif

and to be clear, i am not saying it is right or wrong, i am just repeating what i have been told all my life. wink.gif

i ask because Kaleigh has had wax build up from birth that comes out in chunks every couple of weeks. it is gross lol.

kayla's mama replied: I use soap and water for the outside and a baby Q-tip for inside!!

amynicole21 replied: Q-tips are fine as long as you don't go too far into the ear canal. They can pierce the ear drum if you aren't careful. We just use Q-tips for anything we can see from the outside. I don't put anything in their ears. .. I don't think it's necessary. unsure.gif
The doctor cleans them out at their well-baby visit if they are too dirty to see inside.

MyLuvBugs replied: Just a plain old Q-tip after her bath. Wipe them out and we're good to go. smile.gif

CantWait replied: If you mean just the inside, just water.

CantWait replied:
You can use them just on the outside part of the inner ear, but not right down. Does that make sense???

luvbug00 replied: q tips after they have been soaped and watered..that other stuff i've never heard of before..learn somthin new every day. happy.gif

Or were you being serious...
Sorry. Probably. I know some parents don't. I don't really clean A's either, just kind of wipe with a washcloth in the tub...
That's just me.

Nina J replied: I don't clean the inside of the ear, because my ear doctor told me not to. She said that's what wax in your ear is for, and only to clean it if it becomes to apparent, which it shouldn't.

But, if the outer ear gets dirty, I clean it with water.

I was cleaning my ears once and pushed the wax in. I couldn't hear and it hurt so bad, I had to go to the emergency room blush.gif They got it out with a syringe (no needle on the end) and water. The nurse yelled at me and told me never to put things in my ears, so I never have because she scared me. laugh.gif

edited to say: Emily doesn't have disgusting dirty ears because I don't clean them, if she had ears with heaps of wax that was obvious I would clean them wink.gif She has nice clean ears though happy.gif

punkeemunkee'smom replied: I use the big Qtips on the outer ear and wash behind with soap and water. She does try to do it herself but Tay had her ear canal perforated BY the pedi when she was little with one of those wax hook things...He said oh she has a little bump of wax down there and pulled out a HUNK of skin and tissue from her ear. It turned into a visit to the ER (she was bleeding and I wouldn't let him touch her again) and 2 trips to an ENT. To this day I have new nurses and if there is a doc that has not seen her (NOT the same office) if she had tons of ear infections because there is a scar...

MommyToAshley replied: Kimberley, my ped also told me not to use Q-tips. When Ashley was little, she would wax build up in her ears and the ped would use a special instrument to remove the wax.

Now, I don't see a lot of wax. I use a washcloth in the bathtub, and then just a q-tip around the edges. I never go inside the ear.

I wonder what that product was that you saw at the ped's office... if it is available over the counter for kids?

holley79 replied: Pretty much just water when she is in the bath.

paradisemommy replied: skyler has a ton of wax buildup in her ears too..

i use 50/50 hydrogene peroxide and water and use a dropper to fill their ears..let it sit for a bit then dry off the excess water - after 3 days rinse it out with warm water and you should see the chunks of wax come out..
