Help me settle disagreement with DH

MommyToAshley wrote: We had a disagreement about what temparture to set our thermostat on. I told him that "normal" people set the temp around the temp I think we should set it during the winter.

So, what temp do you set your heat during the winter? (If different at night than during the day, what temp at night?)

toady_buckshot_noodle replied: I like it at 72 year round.

But Hubby is stingy and will set it as high as 76 or 78 in summer and 68 inwinter.

Sarah&Mackenzie replied: Well right now since it is not too cold out I think it is set at 72 and it stays there, we don't turn it down at night (though I think we should) When it gets really cold I think we set it at 75-77. I want to keep little miss Mackenzie warm!!!

A&A'smommy replied: I don't know how to work a thermostat I can't figure out how to make warmer or cooler blush.gif blush.gif but I think we keep it at like around 74 or 75 during the night it keeps us pretty warm so warm that we can usually turn it off during the day wink.gif

5littleladies replied: I keep it at 70 during the day and drop it down to about 65 at night.

I'm interested to hear how this resolves. wink.gif

Jamison'smama replied: 66 at night, I turn it up to 70 in the morning when the kids are in their pajamas and then I usually turn it down to about 68 throughout the day--once everyone us up and dressed.

Kaitlin'smom replied: I dunno but we might be battling again this summer i was fine at 74 he was to hot, he was fine at 73 I was to cold se we wee constantly batling the 1 degree laugh.gif I told him we need one that we can set at 73.5 laugh.gif I dunno what this winter temp will be, thankfully we dont have gas otherwise it woudl be much colder. Right now I think we are on 72?

~Roo'sMama~ replied: I like it to be around 72-74 during the day, and around 65-68 at night. But we have a big drafty house that costs too much to heat so we keep it at 68 during the day and 60 at night. bawling.gif

Kaitlin'smom replied: just wondering for those who turn it down at night why? whats the reason? rolleyes.gif

5littleladies replied:
It saves money on heating. Once you are tucked all snug in your bed you don't need as much heat in the air to stay warm. happy.gif

My2Beauties replied: Ours is on 72-75 through the day depending on how cool it is and we turn it down to between 68-70 at night.

MomToMany replied: We have an outdoor corn burning stove with water lines running to the house. Then our furnace blows the warm air from the hot water through the house. So, we leave our thermostat at about 70 day & night. Corn is cheap (luckily), so we don't worry about our heating bill as much.

kimberley replied: about 70 or less at night and the day time depends on the temp outside and if we are home. if we are not home or it is mild, it stays at about 65. if it is really cold, about 70-72.

i turn it down at night for two reasons. one, once you are under your covers, you stay warm and dont need as much heat. two, because i cannot breathe or sleep if it is too hot and dry.

jcc64 replied: Man, you guys like it HOT! The absolute highest we ever go is 66 degrees ( normally it's 62)- at night we drop it down to 60 where we're sleeping- 58 in the rest of the house. Who needs to pay for heat when you're asleep?! (I can't stand being hot when I sleep- that's what cuddling is for).
My mom is even worse. Sometimes when I get up in the morning at her house, I can actually see my breath. rolling_smile.gif )
As it is, my heating bills are over $300/month. How do you guys afford to keep your thermostats up so high?!

Kaitlin'smom replied:
humm I always wondering if that was the case but never found good proof of it.

I can sleep if I am cold anything below 70 I freeze and cant sleep.

Jeanne-thankfully we have a heat pump and NO GAS so our bills are not bad, I am also on buget billing so its the same every month and the catch up is in Agu and usaully I dont owe more than 50 one year I had a credit.

mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: Our heat kicks on if it drops to 70 or lower.

My2Beauties replied:
HOly Cow Jeanne - $300 per month! Lord we keep ours high and it never gets over $125 a month! ohmy.gif

mckayleesmom replied: We usually keep ours around 72.....but we don't pay for it

Kaitlin'smom replied: so whats the verdict?

3xsthefun replied: We keep ours around 68-70.

jem0622 replied: Around 69 at night. 70/71 during the day.

PrairieMom replied: 72-74 durring the day, and 68 at night. in the winter.
In the summer the air kicks on if it gets above 72 in the house.

jcc64 replied: Don't forget, LeaAnn- I live in the mountains in upstate NY, in a 100 yr old farmhouse- not an easy thing to heat.

~Roo'sMama~ replied:
Yeah our house was built in 1893 or something like that... before the 1900's anyways ~ last winter our heating bill was $200 a month (and we were cold all winter) and it's supposed to go up even higher this year. sad.gif

kit_kats_mom replied: We keep ours at between 72 & 74 year round. Of course we are in FL so it's our AC bills that kill us. Winter is no biggie really.

mom21kid2dogs replied: rolling_smile.gif I think everyone has this arguement, don't they? rolling_smile.gif

In order to get central air, my husband had to agree to the following conditions~ no lower than 74 degrees in the summer and 72 in the winter. I hate air conditioning and actually would prefer a temp of 73-74year round but he's a "hottie" cool.gif

BTW, my father was a heating and air conditioner contractor all his adult life. He says that if you have a high efficiency furnance there is no reason to lower your temp at night. It actually can waste more energy than it saves.

My2Beauties replied:
Well yeah I forgot about all that - DUH! rolleyes.gif Mommy brain!

Boys r us replied: We have ours preset. it's digital so that we can set it to be one temp during the day and one at night and one temp during the day on weekdays when no one is home and one temp on the weekends. Pretty nifty!

Anyhow it's set to be at 68 during the day when no one is at home and also at night, I NEED it to be cold at night. If it's above 70, I can't sleep. During the times when we are at home and awake, we keep it at 72.

3_call_me_mama replied: Ours stays at 68 during the day adn goes off at night. (Well 55 I think, but we have a pellet stove that heats the downstairs (where we sleep) and it keeps it at 66 down there at night.

Hillbilly Housewife replied: I was trying to figure out the conversion....

lol

we generally keep it at 15 or 16 degrees, day and night. I believe that is around 60 degrees.....

when it gets colder, we'll most likely bring it up to about 18, which is around 65 for you guys i think...

baileygirl replied:
Ditto. 72 is the perfect temp for me.

Kaitlin'smom replied:
exactully what I have been taught, so we dont change it, except when we are away for al long period of time I will change it slightly then.

MommyToAshley replied: With the exception of a few cold-blooded people here (just joking, no offense meant), it seems most of you agree with me. biggrin.gif

DH thinks that 67 is too hot and wanted me to turn the heater down even lower last night. It's not that he wants to save on the electric bill, because we keep it that cold in the summer as well. (our bill is higher in the summer than in the winter) It's because he is hot-blooded. Ashley, unfortunately, takes after him and only sleeps when it is cool in the house. But, I freeze and think anything below 67 is too cold. (We leave it the same temp day/night) DH thinks we should turn it down to 65 at night... BRRRRRR.

MyBlueEyedBabies replied: Ours is set at 62 year round...though we don't have A/C so it only matters when It's cold out. And if it is set ablove 65 it will roast me right out of the house

My3LilMonkeys replied: We set ours to 68-72 during the day depending on how cold it is out. At night it is on 65. For us, those extra few degrees really do make a difference in our heating bill.

Kaitlin'smom replied: I am wondering if our different temps have to do with how the house is heated? hummmm

jcc64 replied: It's a good thing you're not married to me, Dee Dee! rolling_smile.gif
I can't imagine being in a 72 degree house, day or night. It's just not what I'm used to, I guess. If I feel cold, I just put a sweater on rather than turn up the heat- mainly b/c high heat makes me feel all lethargic and dried out, kwim?

gr33n3y3z replied: I was going to say I like it cold when I sleep like 65 but everyone says its too cold so it is set at 68 night and day and I have the bedroom window open

amymom replied:
I live in an old victorian built around 1860 or before. Last year our gas bills were over 500 a month for 3 months. But I live in Upstate NY (I think I am about 250 or so miles north of you Jeanne) and we had 8 weeks of below zero weather last year. Hopefully this winter will be better.

We just put in a new high efficiency furnace and we were told to keep it the house at the same temperature all day / night for best efficiency. We have it at 70 right now. Last winter we were at 72 which was too warm for me to sleep in. 70 seems cold now but it is only going down to the 20's outside at night. We are experimenting this winter.

~Roo'sMama~ replied:
65 at night actually sounds ok to me, but I like it to be nice and toasty warm during the day. biggrin.gif I agree with you, 67 is way too cold during the day ~ we try to keep it at 68 but only to save money. I'm usually bundled up all day with lots of blankets. rolleyes.gif

When we lived in our apartment and didn't have to pay for our heat, it was usually about 80 degrees all winter long and I LOVED it. tongue.gif I wore shorts and t-shirts all the time.

redchief replied: 68, but as long as the sun is shining the house gets up to about 72 during most days in the winter without the heat coming on (we have a lot of south facing windows).

5littleladies replied:
Ugh! I hated that! When we lived there I had the windows open all winter long! rolling_smile.gif

jcc64 replied:

OK, I'm certain I'll get flamed for saying this, but I'm just kinda wondering.... doesn't anyone worry about the limited availability of fossil fuels? Oil is a finite natural resource- it's not liberal hyperbole that we WILL run out if it one day in the not so distant future. And I mean, shorts and tee shirts are great in the summer, but sweaters and jeans in Feb aren't THAT horrible, are they?? When I go to work in the city, and the windows need to be open b/c the heat is blasting uncontrollably out of the pipes- the wastefulness really bothers me. I realize everyone has a different comfort level, but it is nice to keep an eye on the big picture once and awhile too.

gr33n3y3z replied:
not from me you wont wink.gif

But I agree with you we will run out sad.gif
I'm glad we have alot of windows to let the sun heat our house during the day and it holds pretty good at night

5littleladies replied:
Not debating anything here wink.gif -Just want to come to Sara's defence and say that she had no control over the heat. It was controlled by the always cold apartment across the hall which was on the North side of the building resulting in a toasty warm apartment on the south side. tongue.gif

~Roo'sMama~ replied:
Yep the 3 front apartments in the building were all an the same thermostat - it was actually in the apartment my in-laws lived in across the hall. tongue.gif

If we had had control over it we would have kept it at 72 which is very comfortable for me and I have no problem whatsoever with wearing jeans and sweatshirts in the winter. I was only saying that I really enjoyed that one winter of being nice and warm and not having to bundle up ~ I guess I should have clarified that I didn't have it that warm on purpose.

Right now I am freezing my butt off every day because we can't afford to turn the heat up. We have it set to 68 during the day but it only gets that warm right where our thermostat is and the rest of the house is still really cold. And I'm sure that once we get our next heating bill we will have to start turning it down even lower so I guess I'm doing more than my fair share of saving the environment. dry.gif

MM'sMama replied: Dh would love it if we kept it on NO higher then 68 during the winter but I like it on about 73-75 so we keep it on 73-75 rolling_smile.gif. Once in a while 70 at night only.

CantWait replied: At night, I pretty much turn it all the way down. Whatever is enough so I don't freeze the pipes.
