Guys we need your help - please!!
sparkys2boys wrote: Logan has entered the sciene fair at his school!! This is a major thing for him, he is so shy and nervous to try new things that I have to beg him to try stuff and normally he just won't. Yesterday he mentioned the fair and I encouraged him to enter.. and HE DID today!!! I am so proud of him right now! This is MAJOR for us!! Anyways, now we need some ideas as to what he could to?? He is allowed some help from us but mostly has to be done on his own.. KWIM. Anyone have ideas for us? He has to have a scientific question that he is trying to answer and then proof to back it up etc. HELP..lol.. I have never done anything like this before?? Thanks in advance!
Hillbilly Housewife replied: Oooh sprouts!! In the light, moderate light and in the dark..which grown better, faster etc....
Sorry - I have sprouts on the brain...
sparkys2boys replied: I wont even ask Rocky..lol. But can you elobrate a little more for me please?? And what is the scientfic question we would be answering etc?
sparkys2boys replied: NVM I seen you post..lol!!
Maddie&EthansMom replied: Volcano was always easiest for me. However, there will probably be lots of those at the fair.
Crystalina replied: I think Sprout on the Brain Rocky is trying to say that you should plant some seeds and prove that seeds given more light grow better then with a darker light.
Then again I could be wrong.
Hillbilly Housewife replied: Just wether the same type of seeds grow better in good sunlight (by a window) in moderate light (just regular daytime, like a corner in the kitchen) or in the dark (in a cupboard)
Unchanging variables - same water, same # of seeds variables - light Do plants grow better in good light, medium light or darkness?
Some sprouts stay white in the dark.
Calimama replied: I always wanted to do what causes mirage's... and cover my whole board in foil to look like a mirage. My mom would never let me though.
Jamison'smama replied: I won second place in 3rd grade for an evaporation experiment and showing the water cycle--rain, running off into bodies or water, evaporating into clouds, clouds moving over, raining on the land....it was many many years ago and very basic
sparkys2boys replied: Thanks Denise.. very enlightening!! I can why see said no you goof!
lisar replied: My vote is for a volcano
sparkys2boys replied: Can you give me any more info on what you did??
Calimama replied: I was SIX.. sheeeeesh.
Jackie012007 replied: I actually won a science fair when I was in 5th grade. I did a test of Miracle grow - does it really make a difference in plants. I had 2 containers in which i grew seeds and then continuously watered one with plain tap water and the other with tap water mixed with miracle grow crystals. That was the only variable - they were the same size, same soil, same amount of seeds, same light. And let me tell you, Miracle Grow DOES work - the one fed miracle grow was like 3 times the size of the noraml one!!
punkeemunkee'smom replied: How about the sprouts but you grow some with light only on one side and some upside down. That is fun because they will curve toward the light. I have a great science book let me go look and see what else I find
mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: Well this may be a little advanced for his age...But I remember my workout instructor saying she just helped her teenage son with his project. They swabbed the inside of a public toilet, like at mcdonalds and put it under a microscope. Then they also swabbed the inside of the ice machine at mcdonalds or somewhere similar. Guess which had more bacteria??? Yep. You guessed right. I guess the question would be, which has more germs? And wahla, here's the proof!! You would need a microscope and probably culture dish things. Sorry, not very scientific here, but I thought this is a cool idea if you got permission from the fast-food chain.
sparkys2boys replied: OK we are thinking of doing quick sand.. a liquid or a solid
We have the water and cornstarch mixture but what else would I do with this, as in boards or explanations? HELP HELP HELP
redchief replied: I found a website that explains the nature of quicksand and relates it to ketchup and Oobleck (that mystical stuff from the Dr. Seuss book). Perhaps you can get some quicksand ideas from that.?.?
redchief replied: Duhhh... Forgot to post the website.

sparkys2boys replied: Thanks Ed I seen that one to
PrairieMom replied: you could mix a bunch of it up in a 20 gal tote (a couple inches deep and show how you can walk across it / sink if you stand
Myth busters did a show on it too.
My3LilMonkeys replied: Quicksand sounds cool, and really original!
PrairieMom replied: here is the youtube link

sparkys2boys replied: Thank you!! We actually made a mixture of this up tonight to play with.. sooooo cool. IT WORKS!! Now just to figure out a whole project with it! I am sorta thining along the lines of getting Logan to make it very interactive with the judges kinda thing. Have them maybe walk on some to? What do you think? We could fill a small kiddy pool up and volila.. instant fun!! To over the top do you think or would it grab attention??
PrairieMom replied: that would take a TON of corn starch, but would be fun. At least it cleans up easily. We make some and Ben plays with his plastic dinosaurs in it. maybe you could use something like that to illustrate your point?
