Good News from the fair - Go Tanner!!

TANNER'S MOM wrote: I am so proud of Tanner! He showed 3 rabbits in three different classes. And he brought home 3 BLUE RIBBONS! I was so happy! He was really happy too. He did want to win the best of breed, but the woman who one it was showing the same breed in a different age group then Tan. And to be honest his rabbit cost $15.00 at the livestock auction and she paid over $250.00 for her bunny and it was papered! So, I told him for what he had he did excellent. Also the judge looked at his baby lop that he showed and told him that he almost picked it for best of breed. He said it's hard to for a judge to pick a baby over a mature rabbit. He asked Tanner if he raised it and Tanner told him that it was Bucks baby and he said that Tanner did an excellent job raising this rabbit. And even in picking the Doe. He told Tanner that next year he would bet that the baby lop he showed would be the Grand Champion. He said it was the nicest baby he had seen. He told Tanner he made a wise choice in breeding!

And on our Jersey Wooley he also placed first in our division, but didn't win best of show but was very close. He was second place in best of show. The judge actully raises the Jersey Wooley's and shows on a national level w/ them so she was tough on them. I was nervous for him to be judged by them knowing they raised the rabbits and they would have a standard for them. But she said that ours had the best body type she has seen. She said her coat, her body, her weight were perfect to the standard they judge with. She said that she needed more color on her face and that was the only reason she didn't pick her. The Jersey Wooley was 6 months old and again lost to a more mature rabbit in the Best of Breed.

The 4H leader told Tanner he did an excellent job! They said it's very seldom that when a child first starts showing that they place in their first show. She told him that it was kind of great and unusual. He said beginners luck and she said Nope, that's hard work and good stock!

Tanner was an excellent sport also. When the other rabbits beat him at best of breed, he shook hands and told them good job!

I would like to add that in every class that Tanner showed against the cheating woman's family mentioned in previous post he beat them fair and square. And they were sore losers. One placed 2nd to him and she jerked her rabbit out before the judging was even finished!

This is the baby lop Tanner showed!

See good honest people do come in first

TANNER'S MOM replied: Tanner had a lot of offers for stud fee's and pick of the litter at the fair! I think he found some doe's he would like to have babies out of. Especially a huge Flemish Giant. That would be neat. Talk about a huge rabbit.

Of course I had to explain to Tanner what they meant by stud fee. He had never heard us use that term, even on the farm. That was an interesting conversation. He said they will pay me to let him do it? I said Yup! It was pretty funny!

And just because I have no idea...how do you show rabbits? I mean, I have watched dog shows and how they walk or run them, but I don't know how they do rabbits.

TANNER'S MOM replied: Well to be honest we didn't' really know a lot until yesterday. It was our first time.

You have rabbits of course. They are either a buck or a doe. You raise what you think is the best looking rabbit. They have a "standard" of perfection that you want to try to get your animal the closest too. When it's time to show they call out a breed. If you have a rabbit in the breed you take up to the judges table. The judge lines the rabbits up by age and sex. They have cages on the table and you put your rabbit in the cage. The judge then takes the rabbit out and looks it over really well. They look at weight, bone size, height of rabbit, ears, eyes, marking, coat, feet, nails, sex organs. They pet rabbit, turn it on it's stomach etc. They look for gentleness also. Then they pick the rabbit they think is closest to the "standard of perfection" It can't be just the cutest rabbit. It has to follow so many rules that it's not funny.

So, that's what rabbit showing is all about.

They also have a "meat" show. That is for rabbits that are breed for meat. They have what you call a fryer pen. It's 5 rabbits that all way between 3-5lbs. They pick the rabbits that look the most healthy and meaty-est. We didn't' show in that class but a lot of people do.

Danalana replied: Oh, that's awesome!
Except for the meat show sad.gif

mom21kid2dogs replied: Yeah Tanner! That is an awesome way to start your fair career!! thumb.gif thumb.gif thumb.gif
