Frustrated - Please help :(

grapfruit wrote: Does anybody have any experience w/diabetes or gestational diabetes at the least?

I know I'm close to the end, and trust me, I'm ready. I just want to hold my little girl at this point bawling.gif

But I can't get my sugar under control. sleep.gif I had a horrible appointment today. I've been doing the NSTs for 3 weeks now. My appt was at 1pm. I thought "I ate a late breakfast, I can just wait to eat after, it'll be around 2pm". Apparently not. They weren't getting the results they wanted. Basically she wasn't moving. Her heart rate was steady but in the 120s (which is normal, just in the low range). They kept checking me and checking me. Finally the nurse left, to get the dr as it turns out. I was realizing I was feeling dizzy and kind of sick. So I took my sugar. Mind you, when I took it at noon it was high, like 130 growl.gif (needs to be 120 or below). It was 63 in the office. The dr and nurse about freaked. She was like "No! No! That's way too low!" (Really you think? rolleyes.gif )

I had to have somebody bring me food. Thank goodness my appt was in the office in the town that I'm originally "from" so I knew people. My mom, of course, was way too far, so my friend left work to bring me a salad.

So ok. I ate a salad. She got to hopping and all was well. I was there 2 1/2 hrs wink.gif I did have a small cafe mocha from Tim Hortons on the way home (its a long ride and that stupid NST puts me to sleep). I take it at my 2 hr interval and its 140 ohmy.gif growl.gif I went from 63 to 140?!?!?!?! That's nuts!

Now I haven't had anything since, and its been another 2 hrs and I feel kind of "blah" again. Not bad, just blah. Its like 84.

What do I do?!?!? Why can't I get it regulated??? Anything below 80 really makes me feel crappy. But if I eat anything it shoots way up bawling.gif

Does anybody have any advise??!?!?

On the plus side, they think they'll induce early. She said probably around 39 weeks. I think I'm going to beg for 38. Especially if this keeps up. I can't skip meals b/c that REALLY effects the baby, but my sugar being sky high isn't good either. bawling.gif

CantWait replied: I have no experience with this, but wanted to offer my support and hope you get some suggestions and or solutions. What did your doctor suggest?

grapfruit replied:
I didn't realize it was doing this. I've not really had problems w/it plummeting like it is. I just took it again (an hour later) and its 73. So its dropped 10+ pts in an hr. I have dinner on the grill but it looks like I'm going to have to eat something now. Its really not been THAT long since lunch. I ate around 2:30 and its 7:30 now.

I hate having to call the dr for something like this...but I'm starting to think I should...

Mommy2Isabella replied: It is SOOOOOO important to eat snacks.

You should be eating every few hours. The time since you last ate until now is WAY to long and totally explains why your sugars are crazy to me smile.gif

You can also try eating 5 -6 small meals with snacks, a snack should be like the serving size of triscuits with cheese or something. Your meals should also coincide with suggested serving sizes. Like cereal is like 1 cup or 1/2 cup depending on the cereal and then like 1/2 a cup of milk.

Hope this helps smile.gif

My3LilMonkeys replied: ITA with Jessica. I had GD with Bobby and I was supposed to eat every 2 - 2 1/2 hours - basically as soon as I took my 2 hr interval blood draw I was supposed to eat again. My nutritionist was also very strict about the types of foods I was supposed to be eating - I had a chart and everything. For example, breakfast was supposed to be 1 carb & 1 protein and etc. I found if I stuck to those guidelines very closely and cut out all sugar (which my nutritionist also emphasized) my blood sugar stayed in line. On the few occasions I cheated and ate things I shouldn't my blood sugar was off.

hug.gif hug.gif hug.gif Good luck and stick with it as long as you can - I know it's hard but that baby needs to stay in until it's ready !

grapfruit replied: You know I really try and eat snacks but at work its impossible really. I have a hard time taking my sugar on time. Now I was off today, so that can't be an excuse for me today.

I drank a glass of milk and had some applesauce and feel better. I'm waiting for the forever long cooking chicken to come off the grill (I did beer butt chicken and it takes FOREVER).

I think I'm just ready to be done. I talked to the DR a little bit ago and she confirmed that they will induce me early. So that's a relief. I'm just frustrated.

Swood75 replied: I TOTALLY know how you feel!! I had it pretty bad with Kassidy..I couldn't control mine at all the last few weeks (much anyway..)I was having to take 4 pills a day for it and stick myself 4x a day..I would eat a few (serving size) of saltine crackers with peanut butter and drink some water for a snack and my sugar dipped quite a bit too if I didn't eat at regular intervals..If you have anything with sugar in it (even a butterscotch candy or something-that is what one of my nurses gave me when mine dropped in the office 1x)and it helped..I was also induced with Kassidy at 39 weeks.. hug.gif If you need to talk,pm me or I can call or you can call me..If you want my # just let me know.. wink.gif hug.gif

PrairieMom replied: I'm no expert, I never had isssues with this, but it is my understanding that you need to be having small snacks throughout the day to keep your sugar from spiking. did they give you good instruction on what diet to follow? I k now My family practice dr tried to put me on a diabetic type diet one time and gave me NO instruction, leaving me hanging. it was lovely. I went to a nutritionist and they gave me a glycemic index chart that really helped a lot.

maybe this might help?

momofone replied: Alot of those flavored coffees are loaded with sugar
140 is not that high so i think you are doing good. GL

youngmomofone replied: I agree with the snacks. Those are so important. I followed the SB diet before getting preggo and it stresses the importance of eating every few hours to keep blood sugars under control. Good luck for the rest of your pregnancy in controlling your sugars!

boyohboyohboy replied:
I will tell you as a nurse and as a former GD mom. that 140 is high and its every time you are high that added sugar goes straight to the baby, and makes it gain weight.
the idea is to keep your blood sugars as even as possible and not to have the spikes that cause the baby to gain weight and letting yourself have a low blood sugar is bad because your body is going to feed you first, taking from the baby.
and the baby is experiencing all that you are.
you have to eat every 2-3 hours, and if you have to have things at work, you need to just take your sugar during work, it only takes 25 -30 secs. to do it.
quicker if you have a new meter. and you can take some snacks like fruit bars and fruit to keep at your desk.
also Rite aid sells a small container to keep sugar pills in case you get in a situation where you are feeling low, you can chew one until you can get some milk to keep you higher..
milk is a better choice then juice when you drop, it will last longer and hold you at a more even blood sugar..

it is so hard...but so important. I didnt get to see your ticker but you said the dr was going to induce you early, there is a lot of research out there that the baby is given that last bit of immunity from mommy right at the end, those last few weeks, so its best to keep her in as long as you can, I know its hard at the end, and harder yet when you have GD. The baby gets bigger and also you are more uncomfortable..but from my own experience JMHO, keep her in as long as you can.

grapfruit replied:
Yeah 140 is really high. My levels are suppose to be 120 or lower 2 hrs after a meal and 90 or below when I wake up. And they said the "waking up" level is the most important one.

They are worried about growth. They said there's a common "side effect" where the baby's shoulders get too big and she might get stuck or dislocate one or something like that, which is why they induce early.

I'm trying really hard w/the snacks. Like I said, w/my job it's hard. B/c if I'm sitting there w/a customer, I can't just be like, "Oh pardon me a second why I take my blood sugar and have a snack". Just doesn't fly...and a lot of times if its busy, its one customer after another for a stretch. wacko.gif

And I'm careful w/the creamer, they're low or no sugar, and I don't use much, nor do I add any. And its only one small cup (the little styroform ones).

Lately I've been getting a chocolate milk on the way to work (I really really hate white milk) and leaving it in the fridge all day, just sipping it when I go to the back.

boyohboyohboy replied: Hey I was just thinking, what about those diabetic drinks, sold at walmart or the grocery store, called glucerna? maybe call and ask the dr or diatician if you can use that when you cant get to a snack..and you could hid it in a nice coffee mug to just sip it at work when you cant snack???
They say on tv that those are made to keep your blood sugar even, no spikes.

I had trouble with all three of my kids, they told me that they were over 11 pounds and all were born under 8.
I also had a problem with Jakob who they said did have shoulder dystocia which is what they mean when the baby grows and get to broad to fit thru and they might have to break their shoulders to fit them in..but its not just breaking their shoulders, it can cause a severe nerve damage.
are you dead set against discussing a c section?
I had been, and really wanted Jakob to come naturally but had I known what I know now I would have done it differently.
I did have a c section with andrew and it was so great and easy to recover from..and it didnt take away from the whole birthing experience..
but also just wanted to add that the dr's only guess at the weight, so just because they think they are large doesnt mean it is so.
I had different dr's with all the kids and they were all wrong, even with multiple ultrasounds.

If you have questions I went thru just what you are, please pm me.

I really do recommend those sugar tabs also, so you dont get in a situation where you are driving or not near food, and have a low blood sugar.

only a few more weeks...

grapfruit replied:
I'm not dead set. I mean I'll do what's best for her. I'd REALLY love to try naturally first. As of the ultrasound at 34.5 weeks (so like 3 weeks ago) she was in the 39th percentile for growth, so certainly not huge. The ultrasound tech said really right on target. I think they just want to be sure. I'm doing better, I have some snack bars under my desk and I've been trying to slip to the back as much as possible.

I'm counting down smile.gif

on a side note. I've had a weird "feeling" day. Like irritated and hyper all at once. Wish I could explain it...

boyohboyohboy replied: I think your news from the tech sounds really great! If you can keep your sugars under control these last two weeks, 19 days will fly right by, the baby grows the fastest in these last two weeks, so any additional sugar you send her way, will make her all the larger...but if you can just keep them down or at least not spike high or low. you are set!
it sounds like you have been doing better with your snacks and getting that small break you need.
Maybe you can just keep excusing yourself to pee, people know preg. women need to go often, so just run to the bathroom and prick your finger! they wont know the difference!
Keep popping into to update I would love to know how your sugars are!
