For the girls that like Diary of a Wimpy Kid....

MommyToAshley wrote: We were at the library last week and Ashley picked up a book called Popularity Papers. She checked it out, but due to the title, I wanted to browse through it before letting her read it. However, when I went to tuck her in that night, the book was in the return pile... She had read the entire book already! Luckily, it's cute, funny, and the author does a great job of teaching the lesson of what is really important in the end.

Anyways, it's in the Diary of A Wimpy Kid journal style, but better than some of the other clones out there. So, if your girls are looking for a similar book, I would recommend this one. Ashley loved the book, she said the only thing bad is that the cursive writing was sloppy girl writing and a little hard to read at times. Here's the amazon link if you want to read the reviews:

coasterqueen replied: We'll have to check it out. thumb.gif I don't have to search for too many books for Kylie, though, because our school is so "pushy" happy.gif in making them read 24/7, that Kylie brings home 3 or 4 books a week from school (library, and ones the teacher brings from home for her to read). laugh.gif

MommyToAshley replied: Ashley reads a lot, but if she is not interested in a book, she won't read as much. I am always on the lookout for books that really catch her interest (although she mostly picks out her own books)... so if there are any the Kylie really likes, please let me know and I will be sure to suggest them to Ashley.

Will do! Right now she's reading about Japan - tsunami's and some depressing story about Hiroshima and people having health issues/dying from the effects of the bomb. She came out of her room crying about it last night. I thought, what an awful book to give an 8 year old to read, but it was for her age group and Dh didn't think it was a big deal. Her teacher gave it to her to read. They are studying Japan right now in school.

I remember reading a book about that about that age...I think it was called 1000 paper cranes or something like that....Our class made 1000 paper cranes we hung from the roof of our classroom....Sad book

jcc64 replied: What's up with Japan and the 3rd grade? Corey just got done with that.

Thanks for the recommendation, Dee Dee. Sounds like something Corey would really like.

coasterqueen replied:
I don't know. Kylie's in 2nd grade. tongue.gif All grades in the elementary school in our district studies a country. I think Kylie studied Mexico (and Megan is now) in Kindy, China in 1st, and Japan in 2nd. Not sure what they'll study next year.

MommyToAshley replied:
I always thought Kylie was in 3rd grade too. It's weird how all the states have different cut-off dates for their birthdates. I think Katherine (Cary's daughter) is in 2nd too due to Florida's cut-off.... and both of your daughters would do very well in 3rd grade, I'm sure. I just think it is weird that even though our daughters were born in the same month, they are in different grades depending on what state they live in. Not that one state is more right or wrong, I just think it should be the same across the nation. Sorry to get off-topic, lol.

coasterqueen replied:
No I completely agree. I don't know if you remember how I fought the school since she only missed the cut-off by 5 days. growl.gif They wouldn't budge and ever since then we've had to get teachers to challenge her since she's BORED. She doesn't have to study for spelling tests, aces math. She has A+ in all her classes are is bored. rolleyes.gif Hopefully later when she DOES get challenged and actually has to study, it won't be an issue. sleep.gif It's the same thing that happened to me, and unfortunately when I finally was challenged and had to study, I was so used to not studying I didn't, and didn't do as well as I should have.

MommyToAshley replied:
I do remember how you fought the school board now .... I am glad that she has good teachers that will challenge her. thumb.gif There are some benefits to being the older child at the top of the class, she can be a leader and have confidence in herself. And, then there is something to being challenged on a daily basis too... both have benefits and both have their downside too.

MommytoKKC replied: Thanks for the tip! I think both my girls would like that book.
