FED UP! - w/my "work" neighbors *pictures*

My office is located in "Historic Downtown Greenville" (home of Annie Oakley!) It really is nice and quaint and all that. EXCEPT my block. There is a Pub a few doors down that REFUSES to clean up the cigarette butts (and sometimes vomit) and other trash his "patrons" leave. I finding the owner and asking and the owner of a barber shop on the other side of the pub said "Good luck, I've asked before". He told me to talk to the mayor.

My question is how the heck does this go on??? How can they get away with it?

If that is in front of your business can't you call the police and make a report of the nastiness? I'm sure it's a civil matter but at least you'd have a report. Then show these pictures to the business owner and say it better be cleaned up or your taking him to court. **I guess he can always say it's a public sidewalk and it could be coming from anybody.**

Why not put an ashtray by that tree? I know you shouldn't have to but maybe that will help?

I'm sorry you have to look at that. That really is gross.

lisar replied: Okay I do smoke but I dont throw them down like that. If there is no ash tray around then I will put it out and hold on to it till I see a trash can. Thats just nasty

I'm not sure, I have a meeting w/the Mainstreet Greenville affliate tonight (unrelated matter) and were going to talk about it. I told her I was going to go to the mayor if nobody did anything. I guess my only other option is to buy a bucket, drill some drainage holes in the bottom and fill it w/sand.

There's a trash can a few yards away. AND most of them are going back in the bar so they can take the butts inside. They told the barber they're trying to grow a cigerette tree. Oh har har. Very funny.

jcc64 replied: I think the bar owner should be required to purchase one of those cigarette recepticle thingies. I think if it was available, most people would use it. There are, of course, always going to be those slobs who insist on putting their butts out on the ground, but it would be a start.

We have the same crap that goes on in our town with this one bar in particular and they feel oh well
As we try and walk down the side walks and have to walk around the puke and all quite disgusting actually I feel they should be fined.

grapfruit replied: Well I have a meeting tonight and we'll be discussing it. If the girl that was suppose to talk to the mayor didn't or didn't get anywhere w/the owner, I'm going to the mayor.

If I don't get anywhere then I'm probably going to start writing the newspaper, and tv news crews. I can be pursuasive.... (and my MS word has spell check:rollsmile:)

Kirstenmumof3 replied: We're having the same problem with the new hospital here! There are ciggarette butts everywhere! It's sad! And a lot of the smokers are nurses! I hope you get somewhere and the neighbourhood gets cleaned up!

I used to toss mine until I found out it takes about 50 YEARS just for ONE cigarette filter to bio-degrade! Now, when I go for walks, I don't even bring my smokes.

Vomit is a body waste that could be hazardous. That, and tossing butts is LITTERING and should be a chargeable offense. I doubt police would do anything, I know around here, people will toss any sort of garbage on the ground and a cop could be right there and not do a thing! Littering is against the law but the police won't charge... what's the point of having the darned LAW then?!?!?!

You could try the police and your mayor, and I would definitely write letters to the paper and see what kind of response it gets. Maybe other people will write in about the same place and even other places and that may make the police get off their butts - no pun intended - and charge this pub.

And Dana, I LOVE your idea for the sign!!

coasterqueen replied: Welcome to my world. Our office is downtown near all kinds of bars. Our building owner put receptacles out for cigarettes and they are used more now than they were before. One of entrances is in a courtyard where homeless sleep on the benches and people puke all over the place there. YUCK!

The other entrance to our building there are usually broken beer bottles all along the sidewalk and street - it's on a railroad track side so no one ever pays attention to it.

It stinks!

Our city is good, though, in that they do put receptacles right out front of most bars downtown.
