Emma was born on 12/5/07!!!!

My husband is still upset with me for doing this, because he thinks that I purposely tried to make myself go into labor. But I swear I didn't! Anyway... on Dec. 3rd I came home from work. I was really irritated because it had snowed recently and my DH had not shoveled our driveway. Which meant that I had only a small path to drive my car into the driveway. You can guess what comes next. At 38 weeks pregnant I probably should not have been shoveling, but I am stubborn. So while DH was at the store I snuck outside and shoveled the driveway. Not the whole thing. Just enough to widen the path. lol

Well, guess what! At 2:30 am on Dec 4th my water broke while I was in bed sleeping. I felt a small trickle and then a gush, so I got up and ran into the bathroom. I had a problem during pregnancy... I snored alot and LOUD. So DH was sleeping on one of the couches downstairs that night. I stomped on the floor a few times and DH yelled "Whats wrong?" I told him my water broke. He ran upstairs. I never saw him move so fast. lol

I called my doctor's office and was connected to their answering service. He called back quickly and told me to get things ready and head to the hospital. We took our time and then headed to the hospital. Once we got there I was examined and hooked up to monitors. Well, the nurse came back after a while and told us they could not determine whether it was actually my water that broke. She said they thought it was just a build up of secretions. She said my contractions were 6 mintes apart and I was not dilated at all, so they were sending me home.

I was confused and disappointed. I was sure that it was my water that had broke, but we listed to the nurse and went home. DH and I went to bed for less than 2 hours when I felt more fluid. I went to the bathroom and I had more liquid running down my legs but this time it was mixed with blood. It was now 7:45am. I called the Doctor's office again. The doctor called me back and told me that he felt the hospital had been wrong to send me home. From everything I had told him he was sure that my water had indeed broken at 2:30am. So he told me to head back to the hospital.

We did so and this time I wore a pad to collect some of the fluid. They confirmed it was indeed my water that had broken. I was in labor for a few hours but was not progressing much. So they started me on Patocin (sp?) at about 1pm. Things started progressing better. After a few hours several nurses came rushing into my room. The babies heartrate was really low. They put an oxygen mask on me and had me change positions. This raised her heartrate, but it also made it necessary for the to stop the patocin. Once they stopped the drug I did not dilate further.

After the baby's heartrate was stable for a while they were able to start to patocin again. They did this for several hours but I did not dilate any further. After 4-6 hours they decided it was necessary to do a c-section because the baby's head was stuck and I was not dilating any further. A little before midnight they brought me into the operating room and Emma Rose was born at 12:05am on 12/5. My mom was in the room with me and DH waited in birthing room.

I found out later that normally when a c-section is done a pain pump is put in the mother to control pain after the surgery. But I have a skin condition and the doctor was concerned that it could cause infection if the pump was installed. So he did not give me one. This caused an issue because medication had to then be ordered for me from the pharmacy and administered to me. This took more than 1 hour and by that time the epidural had completely worn off. So I felt all of the pain from the surgery. I was in more pain than I have been in my entire life!!! But I would go through it again for this little girl. She was worth every minute of it!
