Do People prounounce your childs name - wrong??
mckayleesmom wrote: People always say McKaylee's name wrong...they call her McKayla all the time. I don't know how they miss those double ee's at the end. Mckaylee is so funny...she will correct them....even if they call her sweetie or sugar or something she says...."my names not ****** its MA-KAY-LEEEE".....and she sounds it out for them...
My3LilMonkeys replied: Almost everyone pronounces Madison Mad-i-sin when it's really Mad-i-son. It really doesn't bother me though and she's too young to care yet.
MyLuvBugs replied: Oh Heck Yeah! Let's see...We've gotten, Lor-El-EEEE, Lorel-EE, Lora-Lee, Low-Rel-Ee, lor-el-lay??? It's German for crying out loud!!! LOR-EL-I
I totally feel your pain.
PrairieMom replied: Both Benjamin and Alexis are pretty clear cut. so no problems here!
Our Lil' Family replied: Thomas isn't hard to pronounce but I get a little bothered when someone says Thom-isss....it's Thom-AS! Not that big a deal though.
luvmykids replied: People always think Colts name is C-O-L-E or short for Colton, which it isn't but they call him that anyway. I say "Colt, like a baby horse or Colt 45!!!" and they just look at me like they don't know what the big deal is.
Kylie is always called Kaylee or Ky-ly Ky-a-lee but it's Ky-lee. I don't know why, for some reason it's pretty simple to me!
BAC'sMom replied: Oh yes my poor babies get called all kinds of names. Brandeis gets called Bran-dy Bran-da-is..... he has started telling people it's Bran-dis. Ansley gets Ashley and Ainsley. Callum gets called Col-um and Cal-ub. They will hate me they get older I just know it. And don't even get me started about our last name.
youngmomofone replied: No, my dd's is straght forward.
redchief replied: Our children's names are pretty traditional so we don't have any trouble with mispronunciation. As a teacherr of both teens and adults I ask my students to correct me if I mispronounce a name. Names are an important part of a person's identity, especially for kids. I don't think you're out of line in correcting mispronunciation, so long as you keep in mind that mispronunciation is common and usually not intentional. I also think it's super-cute that McKaylee (that's mac-KAY-lee ) has such a strong sense of identity, Brianne. You must make her proud to be herself.
Bee_Kay replied: Ashley and Tyler are pretty clear-cut also.
Nina J replied: Sometimes people pronounce Emily Emma-Lee.
Alot of people have been mis pronouncing Odessa, someone said Oh-da-sa. On her first doctors checkup the lady said the doctor was ready to see Odessy, so I could go through. They had thought her name was Odessy I said it was an 'a' at the end, not a y, then she mis pronounced her name so I had to tell her it was prounounced Oh-Des-ah. I thought it was pretty simple to say.
paradisemommy replied: for some reason a lot of people pronounce taven to rhyme with raven but we have him trained..for the past 6 months at least, he introduces himself to everyone as taven..t-a-v-e-n because besides that, we get gavin or kevin (but not anymore)
C&K*s Mommie replied: People have pronounced Christian's name as Christy & Kristen. It does not bother me really since it is most of the time in passing, but if her teacher or someone who she would be seeing often gets it wrong then correction will have to be noted.
lisar replied: I spelled Raygens name funny. So yes no one calls her reagen they all call her ragen. It drives me nuts.
amynicole21 replied: Yes, my MOTHER can't pronounce Sophia. She says "Sephia" like the car. Every time she says it I answer by saying her name correctly, but my mom still hasn't caught on
KingMom replied: More of my older generation family or older generation folks say Colon like they body part instead of Col-in. I hate it but I don't say much to them since they are older. His first name is really Seaborn, but we don't call him that. I can imagine all the folks that would get that wrong.
For the baby girl, we are pretty set with Lauren Elizabeth (mainly b/c we haven't talked anymore about it since we came up with that name). Since they are pretty straight forward I hope folks will get it right, even my older generation family.
Celestrina replied: Ben is straightfoward. My maiden name, however, people would always get wrong. It is simple: Boardman. I mean, how difficult is that? We would get Broadman all the time.
aspenblue1 replied: Oh yes everyone pronounces Kyrsten's name wrong. Isabella they tend to call Isabeal. Isabella is quick to correct everyone on both names.
JP&KJMOM replied: JP first name is Jarrett but most people say Jared. Uh Hello t at the end not d right! Karlee everyone can pronounce but no one ever spells it right.
Girl I am so with you there. Ours is just like it is spelled but everyone tries to make it hard. Although I am still trying to figure out yours!
Kaitlin'smom replied: no they pretty much get Kaitlin right, dont always get the right spelling
now my name well lets not go there, mainly the older generation og DH's family gets it wrong ALL the time. I have been with him over 14 years and still wrong. I usually dont answer them if they call me the wrong name, my only question is if you can spell it right why cant you pronounce it right? Honestly its not hard. Still a bit upset DH would not correct them.
luvbug00 replied: oh all the time! Mya is my-ah but people always say mia or may-ah arugh!! drive us both batty!
Kaitlin'smom replied: so how do you prounounce it?
Ashlynn's Mommy replied: My first daughter's name in Cynthia. I hate it when people call her Cindy. When Cynthia was born, my sister told me not to name her that, because people were going to call her CINDY. Well I should have listened. My second daughter's name is Ashlynn Elizabeth. Since day one her grandmother has been calling her Angela. (my bf's mother). And my dog's name is Dahlia (dale-ee-a) well my bf's mom calls her deel-ee-a. It drives me nutssssssssssssssssssssssssssss
luvbug00 replied: My-ah it's just more commonly spelled Maya.
Kaitlin'smom replied: sorry I read the first one wrong you did say that excuse me while I go have some coffee
luvbug00 replied:
MyLuvBugs replied: So we've done a good job as parents then I suppose. Oh well, with any luck our kids will have to pick out names for their kids that cause the same problems we're causing.
Liz_Kaitlyns_Mama replied: When Kaitlyn goes to the doctor they call out, "Kaitlyn Marble" instead of "Marable" (Mare-uh-bull)
5littleladies replied: It doesn't really bother me when people mispronounce my kids names. Madeline is sometimes called Mad-uh-LINE and it's actually pronounced Mad-uh-lynn. Brianna's kid's club teacher ALWAYS calls her Bri-Ahnna and it's BriAnna. A as in Apple. Ok that one bugs me a bit since we say it right around her all the time. I haven't had any problems with Megan although I know some people pronounce it Mee-gan. And Alyssa-Well I think that one is self-explanitory. We haven't had any questions so far.
Cece00 replied: No, my kids names are easy to pronounce and spelled normally, so I've never gotten someone messing them up.
I mean their names are
Ross Evan Natalie
and the baby we're having is Jack
So yeah, its pretty hard to mess those up, since the only one with more than 4 letters is Natalie & its a pretty straightforward name
I was actually really careful of this when I named my kids, I didnt want ppl to pronounce their names wrong.
mammag replied: The only one people stumble with sometimes is Cade's name. For some reason people want to pronounce it like Katie with a D. Seems easy to me to know the e is silent.....like "made"
Now our last name is a whole diff. story. We get some crazy pronunciations of that. I'm always shocked if someone says it right because it is very rare that they do. You can always tell when a restaurant is about to call our name because they usually pull someone over to help figure out how to say it.
TheOaf66 replied: Nope, Tanner is pretty easy and would be hard to screw up
ashtonsmama replied: I've had people call Ashton by Asher, Aston, and Anders (?!?)
redchief replied: In fairness, that may be a regional dialect thing. Here in NJ we tend to roll the short "i" sound after an "m" into a schwa (you know the sound that's made when described by the upside down - backward "e"). Of course we also call water "wooder."
I shall try my best not to roll the "i" in Em-i-lee's name.
redchief replied: I'm sorry, I've never heard the name Taven spoken, so it would have been very likely and understandable that I would have said Taven like raven.
redchief replied: I have never heard the name Raygen spoken so I would likely have pronounced it ray-jen or ray-gen.... I'm pretty sure I would have stuttered.
ediep replied: Jason is pretty easy
although some people call him Jase for short...which I think is odd, I call him Jay or Jason.
ediep replied: If I wasn't obsessed with the Gilmore girls, i may have a hard time with her name too. But I like it a lot, I just never heared it much before
redchief replied: There are at least five acceptable ways to spell Kaitlin (that's how we spell it, too).
Katelynn Katelyn Caitlin Katelin
It's the Celtic version of Katherine (Catherine), which is greek and older, and the reverse translation isn't exact.
kimberley replied: people are dumb lol
they call Jade... Jane abd Kaleigh... Katie
redchief replied: At least you don't live in Quebec... What do you think they'd be saying there?
BAC'sMom replied:
Now you can see why my kids have so many vowels in there names. I always tell Richard that he needs to by a vowel ...those 3 constants all together just freaks people out.
jcc64 replied: My oldest is Alec with a C at the end, but he is constantly called "Alex". Drives me nuts, but it happens so much he doesn't even bother correcting people anymore. My in laws (for whom English is a 2nd language) even call him Alex. Now it's like a big joke where we all just sort of look at each other and chuckle.
JP&KJMOM replied: Did me anyway.
Liz_Kaitlyns_Mama replied:
Ummm...there's always 'Kaitlyn', too
jaytrevjax replied: My boys' names don't get mispronounced so much as mispelled! My oldest is Jaydan, after my husband justin (hence the "Jay" that's what I call him) and dan after my dad. When he went into Kindergarten, his teacher would spell it JaydEn and even after I corrected her a few times she still got it wrong. He started to spell it that way too, so I had to do alot of extra practice with him so he would get it right! Now he corrects people himself. My second it easy Trevor, although my SIL spells it treAvor! My baby is Jaxon, but, of course we always get Jackson! While my husband was signing the kids up for swimming lessons this year, he actually caught HIMSELF spelling it that way! LOL!
Now my name is said wrong alot! It is Kristalee, but I go by Krista, but I get Kristin, Kirsten, Krystal, and my mom calls me Kris (which is just fine, but, she also calls me toots as in "Tootsie". Maybe I should just have people start calling me that! LOL!)
My3LilMonkeys replied: At the risk of being the dumb one - how do you pronounce it if not ragen? I can't figure out how reagen should be pronounced.
kimberley replied: lol i have no clue but just that it would not be right ask Rocky?
amberlynnie replied: Yes they do! Braden is BRAY-DEN, yet people insist on either adding an N to the middle and calling him Brandon, or Telling me I misspelled his middle name which is Micheal, pronounced Michael, but the switch in the e and a make it gaelic.
Bryce Xavier... lets see I get Bruce... and i am like, what the hell? where do you see a U? and the middle name is prounounced EX-Zave-ear not zavier...god i hate that!
I picked unique names so that my children wouldnt be sitting in a class full of kids with the same names.
I was the only Amber throughout school, and I loved it!
Hillbilly Housewife replied: you guys made my day!
And, I no longer live in Qc - I'm back in Canada baby!
they would no doubt have pronounced Jade like: g (like George G) aaaah - d-uh
did you get that?
G-aaaah-d-uh
and Kaleigh:
K-aaaah-luh-ayyy-gg
quebequers are idiots
Frig - my daughter is NAOMIE (like Na-o-mee) and they called her no-ay-mee all the time and looked at me funny wjen i correected them - they've never heard it. And the IE at the end of my kids' names is the frencxh spelling of their names - otherwise, it would be a Y at the ebd... and they have the nuts to argue with me aboput the spelling.
don't get me started on quebec, i'm still waiting for some $$$$ from them that likely won't get here until July.
holley79 replied: The nurse at the Pedi always says Annika's name wrong. I always correct her.
mckayleesmom replied: I think its pronounced RAY-GIN...like the president....but she spelt it different.....I might be wrong though. That is how I always thought of it.
Paradisemommy........I always new it was TAVEN...like Gavin....
mckayleesmom replied: Ok Holly....how do you prounounce Annika??.....Is it ON_icka....like in Pippy Longstalking or ANN-icka.....which can also be heard in Pippy Longstalking........They always fudged that characters name.
Heather77 replied: Yes
Jake gets called Jacob all the time. His name isn't short for Jacob... it's actually JAKE on his birth certificate.
Brynne will be 2 weeks old tomorrow and we've heard her name mispronounced a dozen times already! ... We've heard BR-EYE-ANN, BR-EEN, BR-EN and the worst of them all... BR-EYE-KNEE. This last one just boggles me. With the exception of names with a double E (ee), WHO actually pronounces the "e" at the end of a name??
Brias3 replied: Ryan and Mason are usually correct but Aliyah messes them all up. They've called her everything from Ally-uh to Ah-lie-uh (long "I" sound). It's supposed to be pronounced Uh-lee-ah.
ashtonsmama replied: I didn't know that Heather had her baby! HEATHER! HUN--YOU WERE SUPPOSED TO TELL ME! Jeez. I'm messed up here. WELCOME TO THE WORLD BABY BRYNNE!
How's it going, Heather?
A&A'smommy replied: YES YES YES everyone call alyssa Aleca seriously its aggravates the crap out of me!!
