Cupcake Cake Holders - anyone use one for a birthday?
coasterqueen wrote: Kylie and I were talking about her cake for her birthday party and we thought it would be neat to do a cupcake cake holder. You know one of those cupcake trees. The very top one would have a "4" candle on it. BUT the more I start thinking about it, doing it this way I won't have anything to put "Happy 4th Birthday Kylie" on, kwim? So then I thought about making a small cake along with it so I could do that, but that seems like a waste.
Has anyone did this before, the cupcake tree for a birthday party? Did you make another cake to put writing on? If you didn't did you feel like anything was missing NOT doing it? I know, sounds like a lame questions, but I'm anal and I think of all these little things.
moped replied: You mean the ones people use for weddings????
coasterqueen replied: Like this, although this is a small one. I'd buy a bigger one.
moped replied: Yes.....I know them well....you can rent them at a bakery or cake shop
mom2my2cuties replied: I have never used one of these -- but I do think a cake on top of cup cakes would be a bit redundant and a bit of a waste.
To be perfectly honest, I don't think children really care about the writing or all that stuff! I think that is for parents mostly. We are a spoiled breed!
I bet that the cupcakes alone would be just perfect and the kids might like it better because they each get thier own which might make it seem a little more special to them.
coasterqueen replied: You are right it is more for us.....Dh would say for me.
I not only thought the idea of cupcakes were good for the kids, but really for the adults as well. The size of the cupcake is really the perfect serving size for an adult...or should be the right size for an adult. I also wouldn't have to serve cake to everyone and miss out on the 'little things'.
Kylie also likes the idea because we can decorate each cupcake 'unique' and she's excited about that.
We are going to go with this, because this is what Kylie wants. I'll just have to get the idea of the writing out of my head.
My3LilMonkeys replied: Depending on how many people you are having/how many cupcakes you need, you could do just a small tree and arrange the rest on a tray with 1 letter on each cupcake to spell out "Happy Birthday Kylie".
Jamison'smama replied: I have seen it done where the cupcakes are formed together into a butterfly shape or any shape, frosted as one cake with writing etc--then seperated for serving.
This is a crude version but gets the idea across.
Another idea is making each cupcake a different color, putting them out on the table---and putting a letter or word on some of the cupcakes--and tying them together to look like balloons.
Last I saw this you can write on the top cake.
I love the idea!
coasterqueen replied: Thanks a lot Brenda for the ideas/pics. Kylie was looking at them with me and we both LOVED the last idea. I'll see if I can find a stand to do that, I'm sure I could. YAY, you made my day.
Jamison'smama replied: It looks like a regular cake stand--I bet you can find it at any wedding cake bakery. Post pics when you do your trial run
coasterqueen replied: Trial run? I don't think I'm gonna have one, I won't have time with a huge convention right before her party, but I'll be sure to take pics of the finished product. Cross my fingers it'll turn out good.
We did go to one place this morning looking for that kind of stand but didn't see one. So I'll look some more.
Jackie012007 replied: I have another idea... I dunno if they have these where you are, but here they have these candles that are in the shape of letters, and each letter has a toothpick on the end so you can stick it into the cupcake and only the wax letter will stick out... I used them for DF's birthday cake last year... they look like this:
that way you can still have your cupcake tree AND it will say happy birthday!
Maddie&EthansMom replied: It looks like wedding cake stands stacked in different sizes. That's a very cute idea!
I can't wait to see what you come up with, Karen. All of your cakes are always so cute!! Your girls are very lucky
MommyToAshley replied: We recently went to a birthday party that was a strawberry shortcake theme. They had individual cupcakes that were placed beside each other and made one big strawberry and had Happy birthday written across it. It was really cute and worked out nicely.. no mess and cake to worry about cutting into individual pieces.
coasterqueen replied: That's a cute idea too!
Well I got vetoed after we went back in town tonight. I really liked Brenda's idea, with the pic of the round cake on top and small cupcakes on bottom. Kylie liked it too, but then Dh and her ganged up on me (not literally ) and decided they liked the one I showed earlier in this thread. The cupcake 'tree'. You'd think we were making an important purchase or something. Kylie is much more into the whole details at her party this year. I hope she's not going to be anal like me.
C&K*s Mommie replied: Look forward to seeing your finished product. That is a theme that I want to use for Kel's 3rd birthday nexty year. A cupcake and ice cream themed party.
I am anal too about the details when it comes to parties and the like. Usually something is missing, but when it comes down to it the day was perfect in the end.
