Cold Mornings

holley79 wrote: On cold mornings do you go out and crank your vehicle to let it warm up?

I was thinking about this when I was reading Nicole's post and it made me remember a stolen vehicle report from this morning. I go out in the mornings and crank up my truck. I relock my vehicle and keep my spare keys in my pocket.

Maddie&EthansMom replied: There have been lots of stolen vehicles around here b/c of people leaving the keys in the ignition. dry.gif

Kentuckychick replied: I usually don't warm up my car simply because I never remember to until it's too late... and I'm usually running late anyway. However, I live in Kentucky and the lowest it typically gets here is in the teens or 20's so it's no big deal. If it gets frosty, I have to.

If I do have to,

I only warm it up if it's in the driveway, not on the street and I make sure that I lock the doors and use my spare key to get back in. I leave the front door open so that I can see the car at all times. I don't just worry about it getting stolen, I worry about it jumping into gear or something to unsure.gif

I know here in Kentucky though, if your car gets stolen because you're warming it up... you can be charged a fine. It doesn't seem fair, but really I figure the police have bigger worries than my car getting stolen because I offer it up to a thief by leaving the keys in there happy.gif

Calimama replied: No.. we live in southern California and it hasn't gotten cold enough to warm up the vehicles in the mornings. That's fine by me! wink.gif tongue.gif

amymom replied: ummmm Holley... you are in Florida honey cold mornings should not be in your vocabulary!!! tongue.gif

We were -18 degrees F this morning. then the windchill put it down to -28 or some such thing. Talk about cold. But it will get colder as February gets here. biggrin.gif

Back to your question. Sometimes we will start the car, if it is in the driveway. We are in a small town in upstate NY, so it is pretty safe. However, I can't do what some do... they will leave the car running while in the post office, bank or at the grocery store or wherever. Very odd to me.

Brias3 replied: Yes, I do warm it up in the morning. I typically keep the car I drive in the garage but its so cold here, I still like to run it for a bit first. I don't worry about having the keys in their, even though I probably shouldn't be so carefree. I feel really safe in the neighborhood and we live on a cul-de-sac so not alot of traffic that doesn't "belong".

CantWait replied: Yes I do. We don't have a remote lock, so we actually have to leave it unlocked, but we live in a good neighbourhood so I don't worry about it as much. It's either that or sit in the car and freeze.

Right now our heater is broken, so that's exactly what I do.

C&K*s Mommie replied: I do. But after reading what you wrote in another post about a rash of auto thefts recently, I have been locking the car up. I have to go this weekend to get a spare key made, so for the time being I have to take the remote off and leave the ignition key in the car.

cameragirl21 replied:
it was 51 degrees here this morning, brrrr, for us that is freezing! so we DO have cold mornings!

PrairieMom replied:
seriously, if it were 51 degrees, we would all be out in t-shirts playing in the back yard! I can't wait to see 50 again! cool.gif

luvmykids replied: I guess I'm one of the lucky ones....the car stays in the garage which is heated so the car never gets too cold. My beastly old beat up Chevy has a remote starter, the only money I've ever invested in it emlaugh.gif all you have to do is point the remote at it, push the button, and it starts. No unlocking or key in the ignition necessary tongue.gif

~Roo'sMama~ replied:
Ours too. dry.gif

Before the heater broke I would start the van and let it warm up. I can't lock it with a spare key in it though since none of the keyholes in the doors work and I wouldn't be able to get back in. tongue.gif If it was running though and someone wanted it bad enough I'm sure they would find a way in whether it was locked or not. Around here I don't worry about it, but in bigger cities I don't ever leave it running.
