Cheesy vacation destinations - near you?
PrairieMom wrote: Now that vacation time is here what are some vacation destinations near you that are a defifnate "must see?"
The worlds only corn palace is only an hour away from me!

We also have Wall drug, although, you have to drive 6 hours across the state to see it!

My3LilMonkeys replied: Well here in PA we have:
The Crayola crayon factory (but it's not located in the actual factory anymore, it just contains a tour of the process)
Hershey's chocolate World
Several caves/caverns
And about 1 1/2 hours from me is the World's Largest Glacial Pothole.
C&K*s Mommie replied: That Wall Drug sounded interesting, I skimmed the website but for it to be a landmark, and still around sounds interesting.
Bee_Kay replied: Hmmm ...
In Minnesota we have the Mall of America... which is really cool (and super expensive).
Umm, the movie North Country was based on (and shot in) a town not too far from me.
Other than that, minnesota is for hunting and fishing LOL
redchief replied: So let me get this straight... The Corn Palace is a concrete ediface onto which millions of kernels of corn and other crop products are glued each year? I actually might stop and ogle it if I'm ever in the neighborhood. 'Cuz if that ain't capitalism at it's best I don't know what is!
If you have to see that then you definitely have to see Lucy:

She's kind of like a Trojan Horse without the Trojans.
PrairieMom replied: Yup you got it right! They change the design every year and have contests to see what design it is going to be. Inside it is just a big gym. I actually saw Carrot Top perform there once!
PrairieMom replied: Thats the crazy thing about wall drug. It sounds like something that you MUST SEE! but in reality it is just a old westerned themed hightly overpriced strip mall. you can get fresh baked fudge there tho. After 6 hours of some of the most boring roads you will ever drive you are thankfull to have a place to stop and poke around tho. There are Hundreds and hundreds of signs for the place on the way there.
amynicole21 replied: Ummmm, I live in Orlando - need I say more?
MyBrownEyedBoy replied: I agree with the assessment of Wall Drug. I hear there's even a sign for it in Japan.
Here in Idaho...
CosmetologyMommy replied: Hmmm.....I know the Jelly Belly Jelly Bean factory is very near me....do not know which town. There is Navy Pier in downtown Chicago.
Brias3 replied: Yay, Shannan! A fellow Chicagoan - I grew up there. And yes, the Jelly Belly factory is right in between us (I'm in the Milwaukee burbs) in Kenosha.
Brias3 replied: I also know I'm fairly near the world's largest can of Hormel chili....beat that
MyBrownEyedBoy replied: Aaron's from the home of the world's largest paint ball.
garrettsmom replied: My "small town" has the world's largest cherry pie!!
PrairieMom replied: Is it a real pie? how would you keep it good?
Okay here, we also have
http://www.garretsonsd.com/tourism.php
This is Garretson SD where Jessie James jumped the gulch to get away from the law. I've been there, I would never jump it on a horse, but it isn't THAT impressive.
We have
http://www.ingallshomestead.com/
Which is the the last place Ma and Pa ingalls lived. Their house is there, and Ma , Pa, mary and carrie are all buried there. Its just over an hour away.
PrairieMom replied: Actually, both of those sound pretty fun! I saw a show on the travel channel about the crayola factory. I hear you get free crayons!
mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: This is a funny post!!! Luckily here in Colorado we mostly have resorts and natural rock formations...thankfully! But all I can really think of is the Celestial Seasons tea factory in Boulder which is said to have the largest peppermint tea bag! Not all that cheesy IMO, but maybe something to go see sometime!
AlexsPajamaMama replied: I'm in Maine aka VacationLand! http://www.visitmaine.com/home.php
We have lighthouses in downeast Maine
Right near me is the The Maine Wildlife Park "home to more than 25 species of native Maine wildlife including moose, black bears, white-tailed deer, bobcats, mountain lions and more.…" We plan to go there this summer. DS would LOVE to see all the animals!!
Up North is Mt. Katahdin. There is a book called Lost on a Mountain in Maine, based on a true of a boy lost on Mt. Katahdin.
...Nothing real cheesy here I guess...
MamaJAM replied: We've been to the Crayola factory a few times (even opening day -- what WAS I thinking). It's been a while - but the last time we went each person received 2 tokens - you could use them to get a 4-pack of crayons (at the end of the 'how they make crayons' display) and a marker from the 'marker-making machine display'. You could use them to get 2 markers or 2 boxes of crayons...whatever you want (though the markers were only in one color). They also have stations where kids can make little crafts using crayola supplies (one time we were there they had just come out with that soft modeling clay - and the kids could get a small piece to make something with). It's nice - though sometimes there are so many people that it's not worth it (no seats at the craft tables -- or the people are too rushed to help the kids).
JAYMESMOM replied: We have the Detroit Zoo--although not located in Detroit.
8 Mile--from the movie 8 mile and where Eminem grew up.
Nothing really cheesy here.
In Michigan we also have Michigan Adventure Amusment Park in Muskegeon--never been.
