Cadbury Ad
Kirstenmumof3 wrote: Have anyone of you seen the cadbury ad for their new gum with the boy in the bubble, well you won't see it much longer. One of the moms from the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit at the Hospital for Sick Children who's son has SCID (also known as the bubble boy syndrome) hated the commercials and thought they were tasteless and inconsiderate of how the parents of these children have to raise them, and some are raised specifically in a bubble because the transplants didn't work.
Anyway she contacted one of the other SCID baby mothers from Sick Kids and they went straight to the top and managed (GOD bless them) to get all the ads pulled. The theatre ads were gone asap, but the tv ads will take a few weeks. They told them if their not gone by Sept 30, they were going to the media and hope that a boycott will follow. They really made the guy feel like crap and hope he realizes they went too far.
Anyways one great step for MOMS!!!!!!HIP HIP HURRAY!!!!!
kimberley replied: haven't seen it but i am glad they got it pulled. that is unacceptable!
luvbug00 replied: Haven't seen the commercial will look for it on youtube. There are many people with many illnesses and disablilites being portrayed in the media be it by shows or commercials, somtimes in a helpful light and sometimes in a wrongful sence. They didn't pull the bubble boy movie and I doubt they will pull this commercial.
CantWait replied: I'm sorry, I didn't see anything wrong with it. I didn't get the gum commercial. I was thinking that maybe because the boy exploded his gum that would be an indication of what he would be like in bed pre-ej, you know.
I guess though because I'm not in the position of these mothers I see it in a different light. Sorry they were offended by it, I'm sure nothing was meant.
mummy2girls replied: I could never figure out what that gun with the boy in the bubble meant... i still dotn understand:)
Nathansmom replied: I never fully understood that commerical anyway.....
mom2my2cuties replied: I think it is kind of petty. I personally know a mom who has a little boy with SCID - and seriously, these women have MUCH better things to do with thier time than to worry about some insignificant TV commercial. Or at least, much beter things they SHOULD be doing with thier time.
Crystalina replied: I have not seen the commercial either. But if it is what I am thinking ( a boy in a bubble gum bubble) then I don't understand why they would be so upset. It would be a cute little commercial. There are many things that rub a person the wrong way in this world and others think nothing of it. Like I said, if it is a mere commercial about a boy in a bubblegum bubble then I don't get their anger. I would see a commercial like that and never think they are being inconsiderate to childeren with SCID. That is just me though and that is if the commercial is as I imagine it to be. I will have to check it out.
Maybe if I were on the other spectrum it would be differant but I doubt it. The commercial would have to be blatantly disrespectful for me to think they were going there with it.

I guess if you know someone with a child that has SCID, you obviously don't understand the way that these children live. I personally think your comment was a little harsh. These kids go through HELL! They live in an isolation room, there parents have to wear sterile gowns, gloves, masks, and booties on there shoes. There children will never see them smile (while they are in isolation). The one mother her sons SCID was caught was he was older than the normal age range and he can't talk, because part of talking is seeing facial expressions. And the other child has to have intramuscular injections in both of his legs just so he will have an immune system and will be flying to Italy to take part in a research study to have gene therapy just so he will survive! I've seen these mothers cry, I've seen watched the code blue when a SCID baby on the unit died. So don't tell me that this was "PETTY and a WASTE OF THERE TIME" I think what these women have done was make this friggin company aware of that and that IS NOT A WASTE OF THERE TIME!
mom2my2cuties replied: In my opinion, that is just a commercial, nothing to get up in arms over. I have seen the commercial, if it is the one I am thinking, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with it.
I have the upmost sympathy for children who are suffering as I spend the majority of my time working with terminally ill children, but honestly, the commerical was harmless. The one I am thinking, didn't have the child 'living' in the bubble, simply showed the little boy inside the bubble gum. And I honestly believe that the only ones who even gave it a second thought were a handful of moms.
And as far as saying they have better things to do, I just think that the time they spent going after this company, could have spent with thier child. That being said, I think everyone should all spend more time with our kids instead of worrying about other things so often (Me being the biggest one )
I do apologize for how harsh it sounded. I didn't mean for it to sound bad at all.
Kirstenmumof3 replied: The commercial that has these women upset has the boy living in a bubble suit (not bubble gum), the bubble around his face is opened a girl is brought into the room. His father gives him a piece of gum and the gum explods and sends this blue juice accross the room. Then the bubble is closed and the girl leaves. I'm not sure if there are 2 different commercials.
Crystalina replied: Do you have a link to this commercial? or know the name of the actual gum it is advertising? I really want to see this commercial now.
mom2my2cuties replied: Ok - we saw one that was airing the last few days with this kid getting caught in this giant bubble he blew. My husband and I thought it was funny because my son loves to blow giant bubbles. But come to think of it, it was a bubbalicious I think. My mistake. It also sounds like this might be an attempt at a spoof of the movie Bubble Boy - which I did think was pretty tasteless.
Kirstenmumof3 replied: I'll see if I can find it.
CantWait replied: This is the same one I saw, and I stand by my original post...
