Birth Story of Hannah Elise & Olivia Rose

jem0622 wrote: This is a cut & paste b/c time is slim. I am going to post a few pics to my website shortly.

On Saturday, 11/27, I began losing my mucous plug in the late afternoon. No bloody show though. Just the start of losing the plug and some cramping. No regular contrax.

On Monday, 11/29, I overslept a little b/c I set the alarm clock for PM and not AM. The L&D nurse said that I would be called back after the 7 AM shift rotation with a time to come in. By 8 AM I had not been called so I called in and they said to come at 9 AM but to call before leaving home in case things got hectic there. We called and were told to come in. DH and I headed out.

By the time I settled into my bed it was 10 AM. I had to wait for the OB to come and check me and determine what the course of action would be. He came in about 11:20/11:30 AM. I was 80% effaced and 2cm dialated. He tried to sweep my membranes to see if things helped. He told me I could go with Pitocin, a prostaglandin gel, or a c-sec since I was not contracting. I opted for Pitocin because I had some clotting issues with my uterus during my last delivery and felt it was best.

I started the Pitocin at 12 noon (roughly). I was checked again after the OB shift change and had not progressed. The OB said he could break my water, turn up the Pit with a vengance, or insert a prostaglandin gel. I asked him to break my water. At 3:30 PM my water for Baby A was broken. Immediately my contrax intensified and hurt. By 4:30 PM they were less than 2 minutes apart and I told them they really needed to start the epidural before it got too late. I was checked and had progressed to 95% effaced, 4 cm dialated, and Baby A was at 0 station. They put a monitor on the top of her head to ensure she was not in distress. I got my epi and felt loads better.

Just after 5 PM I suddenly seemed to feel some pressure and slight discomfort. I told DH to get the nurse so the OB could check me. I was ready to deliver, and things got nuts. 2 nurses for each baby, 2 nurses for the OB, plus a u/s machine to check Baby B's position after A was delivered.

I began pushing around 5:08/5:10 and at 5:13 PM Hannah Elise arrived, weighing 5 lbs, 6 3/4 ounces and 19 1/4 inches long. They did a quick check of Baby B and at 5:21 Olivia Rose arrived, weighing 5 lbs, 2 ounces (roughly) and 17 3/4 inches long. Their apgars were 8 and 9. Olivia got a little formula b/c her glucose was a little low and then all was well. Both went under warmers for a bit and then came to me.

I was elated to once again have a vaginal birth and no tears. I was grateful that the girls had no NICU time and came home with us on Wednesday, Dec. 1st. Definitely sleep deprived, but they are beautiful and healthy and I am hoping their weight check and jaundice check is uneventful tomorrow. They are champion nursers and I am pleased to say that they are nursing simultaneously.

The big brothers are doing extremely well and such big helpers. It is definitely going to take time adjusting to the change in our family size, but I am grateful to God for what he has given to us.
