Any moms with diabetic children

flirtycuddle wrote: My sister was diagnosed with diabetes at the age of 4 and I still lived at home at that time so I saw all the signs my parents didn't know were diabetes. Now as I sit here and watch my dd I am seeing all those same signs as if it was my sister. Diabetes is in both sides of my family i just found out last week. My sister is my half sister and I thought she just had it from step-dads side but my mom just todl me different. Both of my grandparents have it and now as I am seeing my dd act how my sister did i am starting to worry. She has her times where she will be up for an hour or so and just go to sleep where ever she is. It could be on the couch or on the floor and even on the computer chair. She is drinking about 10 cups of juice a day (cuz of so much i water it down half and half) and going through diapres in less then an hour sometiems. She has never gone through diapers that fast. I am going to see if I can get her tested just for a peice of mind and my df is the one that brought up testing her. I was thinking it was just her being a toddler wiht her tantrums. She has them all day long off and on and gets totally unconsolbele to where I have to sit on the floor and hold her screaming. she won't calm herself down and screams for sometimes an hour. I try ingnoring it and it will last even longer.

Boo&BugsMom replied: I don't have any advice, as I don't have much experience with it, but if you see those same signs, I wouldn't hesitate to go get her checked out to be safe. A call and trip to the ped. is worth far less than your baby suffering. Hope she's ok. hug.gif

PrairieMom replied: I would get her tested. Diabetes is an icky thing, but if you control it, its much better. The sooner you know, the better you can control it. hug.gif

lisar replied: I was diagnosed Hyperglycemic when I was 11. I played softball and I hit a double one night playing and when I was running the bases I passed out from my sugar. My grand-mother freaked out. But I was fine. I just have to watch my sugar levels. I dont have to take any meds. I just have to be careful. I know the signs and symptons though. I would take her to the DR and have them run a sugar test. They can do blood work to see where her sugar levels are. I get mine tested once a year just to be safe. I fast for it. I also have a sugar tester that stays in my purse. I hope she doesnt have diabetes. But I would be safe and have her tested.

flirtycuddle replied: Are the symptoms for diabetes the same as Hyperglycemia or hypoglycemia? I had a friend that had hypoglycemia and it never erally affected her but i have no clue if the symptoms can be the same

lisar replied:
My symptons were when my sugar got to low I would Pee ALOT. Also when they got to low I my hearing sounds like I am in a tunnel, and my visions goes really blurry, then I normally pass out if I let it go that far. I also get the shakes. Those are the symptoms I get. I also get really tired.

flirtycuddle replied: I know my most of those are diabetic symptoms also. Unfortuntaly my dd is to young to let me know if she has blury vision or what not. She has been up an hour and had 3 glasses of juice already and this is normal for her latly.

PrairieMom replied:
can you try giving her just straight water or something that has a little less sugar in it and see if that helps?

flirtycuddle replied: She is so picky she won't drink just plain water unless it is out a of a bottle that I am drinking out of. I do however buy the sugar free or low carb stuff cuz I know how my sister used to go through juice. I even water that down though. My sister at 4 was drinking coke every day and tons of koolaid and all that.

Boo&BugsMom replied:
I am hyperglycemic and I usually get shakey and tired. If I eat something without sugar, then it goes away.

flirtycuddle replied: Jackie has her appointment in 2 hours so I will know for sure hopefully today either way.

flirtycuddle replied: They tested her sugar and it was a lil low but she hadn't eaten since breakfast so they are doing a urnie catch on her that I have to do myself cuz she wouldn;t go in the office and see from there

lisar replied: Good luck with it. I hope it isnt anything bad.

Ellie replied: that sounds like way too much juice to me. If she's actually thirsty, she'll drink water or milk.

flirtycuddle replied: She doesn't drink a lot of milk for the fact that if she does she gets a really bad reaction. I have tried every way I can to get her to drink water and she will just scream bloody murder or go without till I give her something else. She will drink the juice mixed 3/4 water 1/4 juice so it's not like she's getting straight juice and I won't let her drink that many cups in a day anyway.

redchief replied: Diabetics are hyperglycemic. Hypoglycemia occurs when sugar levels become too low, usually due to too little or no dietary intake coupled with insulin injection. A simple blood test will rule out or confirm your suspicions.
