Ah Ha! - It has a name!

PrairieMom wrote: I ended up seeing my Dr last friday, and we talked about my Thrush problems again, and he finally gave me a diagnosis! I have Chronic yeast Syndrome. I KNEW I wasn't the only one with this problem! Now maybe I can start fixing the situation! thumb.gif
Thats the good news. dry.gif
The bad news is that he put me on this diet, that I have to follow strictly. I can only eat things with a low Glycemic index, so basically I have to eat like some one with diabetes, PLUS, I can't have anything with yeast in it, no bread products at all, not even a cracker, nothing with sugar of any kind in it, nothing with vinegar in it, and no cheese. I'm not really sure what that leaves me with. Basically, fruits and vegis. and meat, but no condiments. (they have vinegar in them)
HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO DO THIS??!?!?!?!?!?!
We are very fast food / convenience food type people. I have no idea about anything to do with whole foods, or things like that. I have been trying this diet for 3 days now, and am discovering everyday more and more things that I can't eat. I really want this to work tho so I am giving it everything I have.

Anyone out there have some ideas about what I can eat? Or how to cook yummy tasting whole foods?

MyBrownEyedBoy replied: That's how I've been eating the past two weeks. Biggest hint I got was to shop around the perimeter of the store. That's where all the foods you need are. The middle aisles are full of processed foods.
As for cooking, get a Foreman Grill if you don't already have one. I love mine. You can grill burgers, steaks, chicken, salmon steaks, veggies. Anything.
I made a beef with broccoli last night that might fit your bill. I used stew meat and browned it in a pan, then I added some water (just a little like 1/3 cup) and frozen broccoli (frozen veggies are better than canned, less salt). Add salt, pepper, I like Mrs Dash seasonings I throw them in anything. Cover the pan and let it all cook/simmer together until the broccoli is cooked through. Then add just a tiny bit of soy sauce (I don't know if that has vinegar, you could omit it) and serve over rice.

PrairieMom replied:
oh! that sounds good. I can't have soy sauce or rice, but the rest of the family could, and I could just dish up mine before I add that other stuff. thumb.gif thanks for the idea. I even have stew meat handy. I may look into a grill too. I know I could cook a lot healthier with one. thumb.gif

MyBlueEyedBabies replied: I do a lot of the "whole" food type things. I totally second the george foreman grill. We use ours more nights than not because it's so fast and easy and the food always turns out great. Lemon juice goes on most of my chicken and then whatever spice I see first (though I have to admit I usually seem to see the rosemary first). Steam a veggie and your good to go. I feel so much better when I eat healty like that so I've really been trying to do it more often lately.

eta. look for an Atkins cook book....there are some great recipes that would work well for you. and you can add carbs for everyone else if thats what they want

amymom replied: This looks like it has some good info at it:

This list from that website seems helpful:

Old Mom Hubbard replied: PrairieMom..my son and I are allergic to wheat, get very bad upset stomach, acid extremely badly and have had this for years but he had a serious problem that came up. Talking to family turns out two of my hubbies' three sisters have Celiac's Disease and his mother is allergic to wheat and gluten. I suspect I am as well. WELL-We took all wheat and gluten out of our diet, my son and I, and have had NO PROBLEMS since. My hubbie's sisters of course took that out of their diets, as did his mother who are doing much better.

Now as for places for ingredients, many online but if there is a Whole Foods near you, they have some very good bread, cookie and cake mixes that are wheat and gluten free. We go there a lot!

Hope this little bit of info helpful. sad.gif Not fun but easy once you get to know places to go for your needs. Looks like others shared some excellent ideas as well, with links too! I be new here, so just taking a tour of the boards and happened on in. Again, hope you can find what you need. Later and chat again soon!

luvmykids replied: I don't know if this would fit your bill but it's super easy and we love it:

Cut up a pkg of mild Italian sausage, saute with a little chopped onion. While you're doing that, start a bag of lentils to cook, usually only takes about 15-20 minutes. Add the sausage and a big can of tomatos to the lentils. Very hearty, flavorful, cheap and filling. Sometimes I have a salad too but you can get away without it.

Another quick way to cook yummy chicken is to put the pieces in a bag with a few sliced lemons and fresh rosemary, let it marinate all day and then grill (I highly recommend the foreman grill too).

CantWait replied: Gosh Tara that sucks. Glad you got an answer to what's been causing the problem, but it's definetly going to take some getting use to. Good Luck, and sorry I got no advice for you.

A&A'smommy replied: YIKES that really sucks I wouldn't know where to even begin with that one. Good luck with it though I hope that you get it all figured out soon, and that you find some yummy things to eat.... you know since you can't add sugar too anything you could use honey it has natural sugar in it.. I'm not sure if you can have that or not but its a suggestion!! dunno.gif hug.gif

PrairieMom replied:
I can't have honey either. laugh.gif no sugar at all, in any form. Not even artificial. dry.gif Its been a week since i have had any coffee, since I take cream and sugar in it. Thankgoodness my headaches have FINALLY gone away. I am a total caffeine junkie.

My hope is that if I do really good and my Thrush goes away, then I can slowly start eating some of those things again. My Dr. really wants me to be hard core for a month at least. blink.gif Thankgoodness, Feb is a short month! laugh.gif

Boo&BugsMom replied: I suppose you can't have pasta then? ??? I can give you lots of yummy pasta recipes. I don't have any advice since I've never been in this situation, but I definitly feel sorry for you. I hope you can get things back to normal soon.

coasterqueen replied: Oh gosh Tara, I thought you were already on a diet eliminating things that could cause yeast/thrush. blush.gif blush.gif I know that's definitely one thing Kellymom recommends. It is a crappy diet, though. I hope you figure it out soon and what will work for you. hug.gif hug.gif

PrairieMom replied:
I knew the major things that I shouldn't be eating, I was avoiding sugar, and that kind of thing, but I had NO IDEA how many things I needed to be eliminating. blink.gif I was not following this diet because it is nearly impossible for me to follow. I am having a real hard time with it. I was near tears at the grocery store this morning. bawling.gif I basically can't eat ANYTHING. Just veggies, and plain meat. Maybe things will get easier in the spring and summer when there is more variety out there.

In my head I knew it would come down to this, but I just wasn't willing to make the life style change. Now it is forced on me because of my health. Actually, I am pretty depressed over it. I have been near tears for 2 days now. bawling.gif

michmom replied: I am glad you found some answers. There are a lot of sites out there for diabetes. I would take a look at them for ideas.

holley79 replied: No clue Tara. I don't think I could handle that kind of diet. hug.gif

Maddie&EthansMom replied: Tara I'm sorry. hug.gif

I've been eating pretty close to this and it's really hard the first couple of days. I hope the time passes quickly for you and you are able to resume a regular diet. hug.gif

Old Mom Hubbard replied: I got up WAY too early so have been doing a lot of reading into this and HOPE something is helpful-

Amazon has a book-here it is-
http://www.amazon.com/Chronic-Candidiasis-...e/dp/076150821X

and more sites-
and from what I have read Chronic Fatigue Syndrome looks like they are recommending the same/similar diet...of course I am no medical doctor and would of course recommend discussing with your doctor before trying any of the ideas herewith...
http://www.holisticonline.com/Remedies/cfs/cfs_nutrition.htm

http://candidapage.com/

my cousin went a similar route for her chronic yeast issues and has been fine for five years since sticking to recommendation through her doctor she had in Europe...and this sounds VERY much like what she did-

and a couple more then off with me to get ready for the day...

I am sure there are many more out there full of information. You just have to go with what doctor recommends and YOUR OWN INSTICT as well. As for WHERE to get some goodies that would be tasty and you can bake your own breads we go to Whole Foods for those. Online, I am sure you will be able to find places that could even deliver if none close by the ingredients for wonderful dishes and tasty treats. Is soy a product you can have, or tofu? You can mix these up with all types of veggies and brown wild rice (if permitted-re brown rice) and very delicious actually.

Best of luck to you there.

coasterqueen replied:
hug.gif I'm sorry Tara. I do know, a bit, what you are feeling. With both girls I had to go on a dairy-elim diet (full blown elim) and I was miserable. With all the food phobias I have it was next to impossible to do and I cried 24/7. I didn't have to do it forever, though, so I guess that made it easier.

My3LilMonkeys replied: That is similar in a lot of principles to the South Beach Diet (particularly phase 1) - no sugars of any kind, nothing with carbs/starches. I would suggest checking your local library for the South Beach book - there are recipes in is that might work for you.

PrairieMom replied:
Thanks! I will. I was thinking it was sounding like Atkins. I know absolutely NOTHING about dieting. I am worried tho, that I will get that stinky breath people were getting on that Atkins diet. blink.gif

I am supposed to be finding a nutritionist that can lay this diet down for me in black and white. I am so sick of arguing with DH over what I can have and can't have. growl.gif The whole things is so frustrating to me, I want to cry every time it is meal time, and I am just ignoring my hunger at snack times. bawling.gif

3_call_me_mama replied: for whole food ideas, do as someone above suggested.. shop teh outside of the store. You need fresh fruits, veggies, meats and any dairy that you are allowed. Buy sprouted bread (i believe a HFS would have it) Basically it's cookign from scratch and eating things tha tdo not come from packages. Make meals as you woudl for your family but remove your portion before you add the rice etc. (Liek inteh broccoli example above) Get creative with salads with oil dressing rather than vinegar ones.
What helped me when I had to do the elimination diet was to make a list of everythign i could eat. (It took a while believe me) adn then i went grocery shopping. I spent about 1-2 hours in the store and bought as manyof the things on teh list that I could afford (or liked.. some things were NOT for me!) Then I went home and cleared off a shelf in teh pantry adn put all my food on there. This gave me a visual of what i could eat and made me feel beter abotu haveing a limited diet. It also helped me to be able to visualize what i could and couldnt' have as far as when out in restaurants etc. It's a bit harder when you can't have yeasts or condiments liek in your case, but if you fill a space with things you CAN have it helps smile.gif HUGS nda hang in there!
