A test run...turned out okay

Boys r us wrote: for some reason I'm overcome with desire to make the cake for Alliebelle's 1st birthday party. Never made a birthday cake before..not sure why I am so determined to do it now. But anyhow, I tried my hand at using Fondant..as you can see..I need some more practice..lol..But I'm looking for ideas/tips from any of you who are good at cake decorating.

After doing this, I think I'm leaning towards frosting her cake with a regular white frosting and then doing the polka dots out of fondant(only b/c I can't get the polka dots to come out right with an icing bag and a tip...they end up with tails on them and look more like hershey's kisses).

So do you think the fondant polka dots would be okay on the regular icing? Do you think the icing will hold them? Any other thoughts or ideas would be great. I think I'm opting for the regular frosting over Fondant on the whole cake b/c it doesn't really taste so great.. and it's pretty hard to work with and not have dips and lumps!
Her REAL cake on her birthday will be 3 tiers and I'm going to put a tutu around the cake plate on the bottom and a tiara on the top.

So..suggestions..ideas..tips to help me make the real one better looking?

If your going to use the fondant again I would put one sheet over both cakes and not do 2 seperate

As for cake icing I'm not sure it is stong enough to hold the fondant poka dots I would just play around a little with making your poka dots
start in the center and work out I've seen many make a circle and just fill it in so keep practicing Oh not sure if you have a pastry bag and a bunch of tips if so use the big open round tip and if not go buy them they are worth the money you can use them for many things with cooking thumb.gif

I know nothing about fondant so I don't know if regular icing would hold it or not...but I do agree that the taste of it is pretty blah.

Maybe you could make the dots out of something else...cut them out of fruit rollups or something?

Maddie&EthansMom replied: Regular icing w/ fondant polka dots is definitely the way you need to go! thumb.gif Naomi (ourlilfamily) just made one the same way. Fondant does taste nasty and it's heavy. It's rather hard to work with unless you do it all the time, but it is so smooth and pretty.

Her cake sounds adorable!! wub.gif

Maddie&EthansMom replied: My mom is a cake decorater...I have some more tips. tongue.gif

Freeze the cake before you ice it (it makes the cake moist and so easy to decorate...and it does thaw quickly...you will get lots of compliments) wink.gif Cut a piece of cardboard a little larger than the bottom layer, cover it in foil (or silver wrapping paper), decorate the cake on a turntable like this one. It just makes it so much easier to decorate. Once the cake is finished you can transfer it to a cake plateau. The cardboard makes it easy to do this. happy.gif Everyone will think you are a professional and the cake will look amazing!!

When is the birthday party?

Our Lil' Family replied: Yep, I just made a cake like that for my MIL, I'll attach a pic. I used normal homemade butter cream icing to cover the cake and then used the fondant for the decorations. It tastes much better that way and looks just fine.

The Kleenex Viva paper towels are wonderful for smoothing the icing. Just ice the cake, let it set for a few minutes then lay the paper towel on the section you are smoothing and run your hand over the paper towel to smooth the icing. Much easier than hot water and your spatula.

Let me know if you have any more questions. Here's a pic of my cake:

That cake is awesome, well done.

I think Naomi covered everything, so I'll just say the idea sounds so cute. I can't wait to see pictures of how it turns out. Oh and for the record, your first attempt looks like it turned out great as well. I've never had a fondant came though.

A&A'smommy replied: I have no advice I just recently made my first cake and let me tell you it was terrible (tasted good though!!!) Looks good and I think you got some great advice too!!

Boys r us replied: Thanks girls!!!!! I love the Viva idea! That sounds GREAT!!!!! I also bought some Fondant tools, a smoother being one of them..I bet that would work on regular icing as well to smooth it out...or on top of the viva towel!

And Aimee..thank you!!! Those are great tips! I'm excited to try this!

her party is november 3rd. I was just wanting to get an early start on practicing so I would know whether or not I was going to need to order one! LOL
After seeing naomi's pics, I'm confident that this will work!!!!! THANKS!!!
