#$%*$ Cell Phones

TheOaf66 wrote: I am growl.gif My cell phone just stopped working one day and take it into US Cellular and they said hmmm, well looks like it just gave out, well if you renew your contract we'll get you a good deal on a phone...My contract goes until September so I have to go that long with no cell phone growl.gif growl.gif growl.gif growl.gif

grapfruit replied:
Just gave out??? I didn't know they did that. blink.gif How long have you had it?? Can you buy a cheapy one until then. I couldn't survive w/o my phone for that long.

lisar replied: E-BAY.... But one off of e-bay and activate it to that plan. They cant stop you and they hate it when people do that.

grapfruit replied:
oOo good idea! smile.gif

Do you have SIM cards or something that you can take out of your old phone and put in the new?? That way numbers and stuff transfer over?

boyohboyohboy replied: we are talking also about getting rid of our cell phones and just going with the go phones from walmart and getting the mins we want when we want.
the new phone packages they make you buy are nuts, we dont even use the media bundles, but they make you purchase them, its seems like you cant get a deal for under $100 a month now.
We have a friend who has a go phone and its much more sturdy then the ones the cell stores sell.

TheOaf66 replied:
do you have to pay to activate a new phone onto there...how much $$$ does that run?

grapfruit replied:
I have Cingular, and we have this little card (SIM card) in the phone. I can take that card out of my phone and put in a new one, no activation charge or anything, and it works IMMEDIATLY. In fact when my brother and I were on vacation his phone kept going black while he was texting his friends so put his card in my phone (he has unlimited texting) and just used my phone for awhile.

lisar replied:
Ditto if you have a sim card then its FREE...

TheOaf66 replied: just called US Cellular and they said $15 if I buy a different phone to activate it

Calimama replied:
That's weird. I bought DH a new phone a week ago and just switched the SIM card into the new one.. it cost nothing. I would just try it.

grapfruit replied:
do you have insurance on your phone?? Just run over it w/the car if you do.. smile.gif

Seriously, that may be cheaper in the long run!!

luvmykids replied: Will they work with you on renewing your contract now? I have Verizon and have lost several phones, they always just renew my contract then and there and give me a new phone.

I believe the activation fee is only if you take it in and have them do it for you...you should be able to switch the card yourself and be up and running with no problems.

indywndy_04 replied:
See if there is a SIM card in the back...all you will need is to put that into a new cell phone and bang-o...you are back in business. That is how my Cingular Phone is...just a thought. smile.gif

TheOaf66 replied:
yeah but I don't think we're gonna stay with US Cellular after that congtract runs out

Boo&BugsMom replied:
I think we'll be going to Verizon after our contract runs out. I'm kind of interested in those Go phones though, or a pay as you go plan since I don't use mine as much as Troy does.

grapfruit replied:
I checked into those for my brother, and they didn't seem worth it. Although I'm sure he talks on his a ton more then you (being 16 and all). But they "charge" you a dollar everyday you use it and then like $.10 a minute or something. So if you put $25 on the phone you can use that up really quick. Ended up getting him a plan was much cheaper. Plus he can text too. Which he likes.

Boo&BugsMom replied:
Eww, that sucks. Sounds expensive. Perhaps Verizon it is.

grapfruit replied:
Yeah that's what I thought. dry.gif I personally have Cingular and have no problems w/them. But have heard GREAT things about Verizon (i.e. great signal strength). I have a couple friends that have them and think they're great. I'd say Verizon is a good choice! thumb.gif

Does anybody use text messaging on their phone? I love it. I can respond when I want and don't have to actually talk to somebody to ask them a quick question.

Anthony275 replied: ive never heard of US cingular

in nextels if you take out the battery there's a little door thingy where the sym card is, nextel is saying you cant switch (but you obv. can as my brother just did about 2 weeks ago) but then again nextel and sprint are just wanting more money out of your pocket.

btw if you get your phone wet and it stops working, if you put it in your oven it dries it out and it starts to work (no joke, look it up if you dont believe me)

luvmykids replied:
I have to agree, I really, really love Verizon and it's mostly because of their signal. We've lived in two places that required you to drive through a mountain canyon and nobody in the world gets signal in there.....except Verizon customers biggrin.gif We couldn't get signal in the canyon when we first got it but they said they are constantly adding towers and sure enough within a few weeks, we had it.
